No, you don’t have to do yoga with legs straight.
No, you don’t have to be able to touch the floor to do yoga.
No, you don’t have to be flexible to do #standingforwardfold.
And no, #handstand and crazy backbends are not really #yoga.
•
The purpose of this pose is to elongate the spine and to lengthen the entire back side of the body. So if your hamstrings are tight, try bending the knees and even use yoga blocks under the hands. Think of it as folding in the hip crease as if you are closing a book or a magazine - and you do that by sucking your belly in (meaning not entirely relaxed!) Keep the spine long too, don’t round your back too much.

Thank you so much for including me in #scmp in a recent #healthandwellness article about #handstand and its benefits. Those who know me know that I love going upside down and I sometimes joke that I can balance on my hands better than in a #treepose 😅
In fact, handstand according to yoga is called #adhomukhavrksasana or downward facing tree pose, meaning handstand is like a tree pose but upside down - the body should be aligned in a straight line. It’s a great pose to improve #corestrength, #focus and to #conqueryourfears , not to mention to keep you youthful.
It is a privilege to share my passion in class but it’s also great to share it on other media. Please check out @steve.pilot from the same article who offers lots of tips on handstand.

Still not sure what to do with your arms and shoulders when in Down dog? Take a few minutes to read this very useful post.
One person's medicine is another person's poison. This is often the case with instructions in Yoga class. A good example is downward facing dog, or any posture where the arms are raised overhead - like in backbends such as Urdhva Dhanurasana.
For most people the instruction to "spread" or protract the shoulder blades and externally rotate the arms, like I'm doing in the image on the left, works well. There is another movement - upward rotation of the scapula which should also happen, but should happen automatically as long as you are not trying to "pull" the shoulders down.
As is often the case, if you want to increase the flexibility of your shoulders and improve your backbends and other postures like handstands then you need to take the arms beyond 180% - which is what I'm doing in the right, and when that happens the shoulders start to internally rotate and the shoulder blades come toward each other, meaning they are no longer protracted.
But it's complicated, because if a hyper mobile person does this they might become unstable in their shoulder joint. Or at the opposite extreme, most people with "stiff" shoulders automatically have their shoulders up around their ears - but without reaching the 180% range.
So, it's hard to give one instruction for everyone, but in general, the first thing to learn is to externally rotate the shoulders and protract the shoulder blades, but to increase your range of motion then the movement changes. But like I said, medicine for one can be poison for another.
