Started last Semptember, Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee at Tampines is run by two sisters Karen and Li Lian from Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee. Karen shared that after helping out at her brother’s stall for some time at Old Airport Road Food Centre, she decided to step out on her own.
Lor mee has been in her blood for the longest time, having started by helping out at her parents’ stall when she was young. The recipe that was handed down to her for this deliciously thick and viscous gravy follows the traditional Fujian-style. The preparation process is not easy, with the sisters having to begin work at about 1.30am
The Lor Mee ($4/5/6) comes in three different sizes, so I thought I might as well go big or go home and went for the large. It came loaded with a generous amount of shredded fish, braised pork, braised egg, beansprouts, parsley and a spoonful of homemade chilli. The lor had a good balance of vinegar and garlic, making it a very satisfying bowl of comfort. They also sell prawn noodles too.

Located in Golden Mile Food Centre, this unassuming Lor Mee stall attracts snaking queues even on weekdays. I ordered a $5 portion and got a large serving of ingredients such as fried wantons, fish, fishcake, pork belly and crispy fish skin.
The sauce was thick, but not starchy to the point where it was difficult to eat. The thick sauce clung to the noodles, which were also well cooked and not mushy. I highly recommend adding all the sauces available at the stall, such as raw garlic, vinegar and chilli sauce. These sauces help lift the Lor Mee sauce, which can be quite heavy on its own.

Thick starchy gravy . This is the general idea that people have of Lor Mee. Yes it’s all true, and it’s too damn shiok! If you’re a fan of braised dishes with that dark gooey sauce, you’ll love this Lor Mee recipe. It’s not the easiest of dishes (like most braised dishes), but really fulfilling once you complete it.
There are 2 criterias to this recipe, which are the gravy with Chinese black vinegar, as well as the toppings that go into this mouth-watering noodle dish. The toppings varies from braised pork belly, braised egg to many other deep fried items. We added deep fried snake head fish slices which goes really well with the thick vinegary gravy and you’ll have a hawker classic made in the comfort of home!

Mee Rebus is a popular hawker dish amongst many of us in both Malaysia and Singapore. What makes this unique dish is the combination of yellow noodles with it's thick and spicy gravy. While we all know how tasty this gravy is, what’s surprising is that the consistency of the sauce comes from mashed sweet potatoes, awesome right?
To complete this awesome recipe, we will garnish this dish with an egg, spring onions, tau kwa, and so many more that make this asian dish so yummy. At the end of the day, this is really simple, yet the end result so satisfying to the home-chef in every of us.
Give it a try today, and cook this recipe away!
