Interview on TEDx HKBU 2016 speaker- Mr Neo Yau
Emerging as a new star in the showbiz, Neo Yau is taking baby steps towards his dreams – of acting and playwriting. Graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), he and his partners started off establishing the group ‘Mocking Jer’, in which the first production has gained over 100 thousand views online in just a few weeks’ time. The two local movies, ‘For Love, We Can’ and ‘She Remembers, He Forgets’, boosted his fame among the Hong Kong audience and have earned him recognitions. As a movie-lover, Neo has been indulging in movie appreciation and production since his childhood, under the influence of his family. His strong urge to perform and his belief in local production are his greatest motivation and drive in his acting and script-writing career. With Stanley Kubrick as his favorite director back in the days in HKAPA, Neo believes that imitation is the root of improving performance. The most vivid presentation of characters comes from the imitation of details and thoughts of the subjects. Neo considers passion as inspiration in life. Only when we have that passion for what we adore, can we proceed in our journeys regardless of the challenges, and shape ourselves, our identity.

English Translation
Dear colleagues, students, alumni and friends,
I believe you have already learnt from the email message of the Chairman of the HKBU Council that I have decided to retire after the completion of my current term at the end of June next year. To some of you, this may have come as a surprise. It was indeed not an easy decision for me to make, as I love HKBU just as you do.
My time as President and Vice-Chancellor during these four years has been very busy but fruitful, and I will take away many fond memories. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here. I was particularly impressed by the high ideals shared and upheld my colleagues when we were formulating Vision 2020; I was overwhelmed with gratitude when we received the donation of HK$100 million from Mrs Hung Hin-shiu to establish the Institute of Creativity; I was elated when HKBU successfully set up its first Partner State Key Laboratory; I was touched by the heartfelt blessing we received when we secured help from Professor Jao Tsung-i to set up the Academy of Sinology; I was heartened by our concerted effort to fight for acquiring the Lee Wai Lee campus site; and I am filled with emotion every time I greet graduating students.
I am particularly grateful for the friendship extended to us by our generous supporters. They have supported us selflessly with their precious time and financial resources. I am deeply moved by some donors who themselves spend very sparingly and live simple lives, but who did not hesitate to donate large sums of money to support our teaching and research projects.
Although I have not been here for very long, I have been much affected by and have totally immersed myself into HKBU’s unique caring atmosphere. I am so proud of our committed colleagues, diligent students and enthusiastic alumni.
I will be 65 at the end of next year, which is already past the age at which most people retire. In the past months when I was struggling over whether to renew my appointment, I considered different plans comprehensively and also consulted my family. After thorough consideration, I chose to retire and bring my academic administration career to an end. On one hand, I feel at ease because HKBU has already formulated, with the consensus of colleagues, a 10-year strategic development plan to guide its way forward; on the other hand, it has always been my wish to once again pick up scientific research that I am passionate about and contribute my utmost to society in this area for the rest of my life.
Please be assured that I will continue to do my best in promoting HKBU’s development during the remainder of my term. I would also be happy to assist HKBU after my retirement in whatever way I can as a member of the community.
Here, I would like to once again thank all members and friends of the HKBU family who have been working side by side with me to advance the University’s development through these years. You will always be in my heart and I will treasure all the wonderful moments I experienced at HKBU!
