The Last of Us Part 2 เพิ่งจะวางจำหน่ายเมื่อวันที่ 19 มิ.ย. ที่ผ่านมา และด้วยความสำเร็จอย่างล้นหลามของตัวเกม ที่มันขึ้นแท่นเกม Exclusive บน PS4 ที่ทำยอดขายได้เร็วที่สุดใน UK นั่นอาจจะไม่ใช่เรื่องน่าแปลกใจนัก ที่ Sony อาจจะอยากให้ Naughty Dog ทำภาคต่อของเกมนี้ในอนาคต

แต่สำหรับ Neil Druckmann ผู้ร่วมสร้างซีรีส์และผู้กำกับร่วมของ The Last of Us ทั้ง 2 ภาคแล้ว ดูจะเป็นเรื่องยากมากๆ ไม่ใช่เรื่องว่ามันจะขายได้หรือไม่ หากแต่เป็นการหาเรื่องราวที่น่าสนใจมาเล่าในภาคต่อไป

จากในบทสัมภาษณ์กับทาง Indie Wire เมื่อถามว่าเป็นไปได้มั้ยที่จะมี The Last of Us Part 3 คุณ Druckmann อธิบายว่า ภาคต่อของ The Last of Us จะต้องผ่านการทดสอบเหมือน Part 2 ก่อน ไม่ว่าทาง Naughty Dog จะหาวิธีใหม่และน่าสนใจมาเล่าเรื่องราวแทนที่จะใช้วิธีการเล่าแบบเดิมๆ ได้หรือไม่ และจากที่ Druckmann กล่าวมา Part 2 ก็ถือว่ายากมากพอแล้ว และจะยิ่งยากกว่าใน Part 3 พร้อมกล่าวว่า "ในตอนนี้" เขายังนึกไม่ออกว่าจะทำแบบนั้นได้ยังไง

"ผมคิดว่า การทดสอบว่า เราควรจะทำ Part 3 หรือไม่ ก็จำเป็นจะต้องมีการทดสอบเหมือนสิ่งที่เราเคยทำไปใน Part 2 ด้วยเกมภาคแรก มันไม่ได้มีความคาดหวังใดๆ และเหมือนว่าเราอยากทำอะไรก็ทำได้ แต่ตอนนี้ เราได้วางรากฐาน ด้วยตัวละครบางตัว ธีมและกระบวนการบางอย่าง ที่มันเป็นตัวตัดสินว่า เราควรทำ Part 2 ต่อมั้ย เราจำเป็นจะต้องทำอะไรบางอย่างที่ไม่ใช่แค่แฟนๆ รู้สึกสบายใจ แต่ต้องทำอะไรที่มันเข้ากับอารมณ์ความรู้สึกหลักที่เราได้เจอในเกมภาคแรก และถ้าหาสิ่งนั้นไม่เจอ เราก็ไม่มีเหตุผลที่จะทำ Part 3 ต่อ"

"และการหาสิ่งนั้นให้เจอเพื่อทำภาคต่อ จะยิ่งยากกว่าที่เคยเป็นในเกมภาคแรก และมันจะยิ่งยากขึ้นไปอีก ในการกลับไปสู่โลกนั้น แล้วหาวิธีในการทำให้มันแตกต่างไปจากเดิม มันก็มีหลายๆ สิ่งที่คุณเคยเห็นไปแล้ว ไม่ว่าจะเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวปุมหลัง หรือเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับว่าการระบาดเกิดขึ้นได้ยังไง ดังนั้น พวกเราจึงจำเป็นที่จะต้องหาทางว่า จะสร้างประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ ที่มันเข้ากับความรู้สึกสะเทือนใจกับเรื่องราวเหล่านี้ได้อย่างไร และผมก็ยังไม่รู้จะทำยังไงเหมือนกันในตอนนี้"
