In hot and humid Singapore, one thing we all appreciate, and some even consider essential, is air-conditioning. 80% of homes and nearly all office and retail buildings have air-conditioning. This consumes lots of electricity, and generates lots of greenhouse gas emissions.
I don’t think we can do away with air-conditioning, so we are pursuing more efficient ways to cool our environment. This Bloomberg Green article describes the district cooling system in Marina Bay South. A centralised cooling plant runs chilled water through a network of underground pipes. It services a large area including Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and the Marina Bay Financial Centre. This centralised system saves around 40% of energy, translating into lower emissions.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has introduced requirements for refrigerators and air-conditioners, such as “climate-friendly” labels, and phasing out the use of high-GWP refrigerants. By raising our air-conditioner temperature setting and using energy efficient appliances at home, we can help lower carbon emissions too.
Global warming cannot be solved in one simple stroke. Amidst current preoccupations with COVID-19, let us not forget to work together to make the world a greener, more sustainable place for future generations. – LHL

DYMM Sultan Johor turut berkenan meluangkan masa berbual bersama Ratu Elizabeth II mengenai minat Baginda dalam sukan berkuda.
Pada pertemuan itu, Baginda Tuanku Sultan turut berkenan menemui anak kedua Ratu Elizabeth II, Duke Of York, Putera Andrew yang amat berminat untuk mengetahui lebih lanjut mengenai Johor.
DYMM Sultan Johor menerangkan kepada Putera Andrew bahawa Johor sedang pesat membangun di mana, pelbagai sektor menjadi tunjang kekuatan ekonomi negeri termasuk sektor pertanian dan perindustrian selain turut menerima beberapa pelaburan utama dari syarikat berpangkalan di Britain.
Ini termasuk kehadiran beberapa institusi pendidikan berprestij serta sekolah antarabangsa dari Britain yang melebarkan sayap mereka ke Johor.

TUANKU SULTAN JOHOR MEETS QUEEN ELIZABETH II AT THE ROYAL WINDSOR HORSE SHOW
HM The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, at the invitation of the The King of Bahrain, HM King Hamad Bin Isa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa, attended the annual Windsor Horse Show in England on Friday (10th May), which was graced by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Tuanku Sultan personally met the English Monarch with King Hamad after her arrival at the world-famous equestrian event.
Sultan Ibrahim, who is a keen equestrian and polo player himself, spent several minutes talking to the Queen about their mutual passion for horses and horse riding.
At the event, Tuanku Sultan also exchanged pleasantries with The Queen’s second son, HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, who was keen to know more about Johor.
His Majesty explained to the Prince that Johor has a strong agricultural and industrial-based economy, especially a flourishing manufacturing sector with several major investments by British companies.
This includes Dyson Ltd – a high-tech home appliances producer - which has made Senai its global manufacturing hub.
The UK-based manufacturer has also set up a research, design and development (RDD) centre in Senai.
Tuanku Sultan also pointed to the strong presence of British universities and international schools in Johor, including the University of Southampton, Newcastle School of Medicine, University of Reading and Marlborough College & International School.
