💕Why I Chose Taiwan #6 💕
"I was graduating from college in 1994 and every year my school, the University of Texas, had a fellowship to study Chinese at 師大 (National Taiwan Normal University, NTNU). That year I applied for it and I got it. I also had the option of going to Japan, but I decided that I wanted to come to Taiwan to keep studying classical Chinese at 師大. It’s funny, thinking back, at that time I had only been outside of the U.S. once before, and I had no preconceived idea of what Taiwan would be like. So obviously, I was very pleasantly surprised. This was 1994, so Taiwan was a little bit different than it is now, but some things are the same: The people were super nice, the food was excellent, and public transportation in Taipei was convenient, although they didn’t have the MRT quite yet. It was a great place to be. Then I came back as an intern at AIT in 1998, and then I was here from 2006-10, studying Taiwanese and then working at AIT in the economic section. I’ve been back again since 2017 as the Principal Officer of our AIT branch in Kaohsiung, and I can tell you Taiwan just keeps getting better and better. I always joke that the nicest people in the world are mid-Westerners and Taiwanese people, and I believe that here in the south, they somehow manage to be even nicer, even friendlier. I think the food is better in the south as well. (Controversial opinion, I know.)"--- AIT Kaohsiung Branch Chief Matthew O’Connor

(Amie Parry)

💕Why I chose Taiwan #16 – Amie Parry
“I grew up in a small city in inland California called San Bernardino. I went to college and graduate school in San Diego. I got my PhD in literature. We were all expected to learn at least one language, so I did Chinese. I traveled to Taiwan with a friend right after I graduated from college in 1987. We came here to teach English and study Chinese for six months, then I traveled around Asia by myself with a backpack.
I originally wanted to study classical Chinese poetry. I got a Fulbright grant and I came back here. I started going to the poetry nights that were happening at that time. I met some of the modernist poets, and I switched my focus to the modernist poetry of the 60s, 70s, and 80s in Taiwan. I wrote my dissertation on modernism as a way of understanding the parts of modernity that are hard to know in the existing political language that we inherit. I think that experience in historical formation is always more complicated than the language.
These poems are not explicitly political; they're very experimental and strange. At the time, the modernist poets I met were mostly 外省, men who had been drafted and come over with the KMT, so they had experienced war and displacement, and a very intense and traumatic historical moment. People experienced it differently, and at that time, it was a hard thing to talk about. Later, I wrote a book about poetry, but I just focused on one or two poets I find really, really fascinating. And I was asking some of the same kinds of questions: how can these poems help you think about certain topics that are hard to think about?
At that time, Modernist poetry was a kind of an institution already. There was a journal called 現代詩, “Modern Poetry,” a really important journal that most of these poets were published in. Some of them combined poetry and theater. There's just so much going on in Taiwan in terms of poetry and performance and literature. It's just amazing. And I'm very interested in it at all, but I haven't kept up. After I finished my dissertation, I got a job offer at 交大. I thought, wow, there's something really amazing happening intellectually here. When my first book came out, it actually got an award in the U.S., and I was so surprised. I didn't even know it had been nominated. I asked them, ‘Why did you choose my book?’ And they said, because one of the chapters has a transnational of framework for the whole argument, so it wasn't like you used Western theories and Eastern texts, it's like the whole knowledge part is coming out of both places.
I currently teach in the English department at National Central University. I'm the chair and I teach writing classes, literature classes, and literary and cultural theory classes. Since my first visit to Taiwan in 1987, I think people are a little more comfortable talking to people from different places. In my personal interactions, I feel a difference, like a greater openness. Back then, there were so many interesting things happening here, all at one time, and that's the time that I happened to be here. And I made good friends in my personal life and in my intellectual life. And I think those are the things that made me come back: like if you feel that there's something interesting happening and there's some way that you can support it. I guess that's a way of feeling at home.” — Amie Parry

Symphony Theatre proudly presents the stage play “The Dream of Red Mansions”, an adaptation of the most celebrated classical Chinese novel! 💥💥
❤ “The Dream of Red Mansions”, an early, lengthy masterpiece, is about to be performed in Malaysia for the first time in drama form. With the play based on the original historical novel of the same name, Symphony Theatre is bound to portray for you an unforgettable, passionate, and heart-rending love story.
❤This time, Symphony Theatre invited Jessie Chung to take the stage as lead actress, portraying the pure and unadulterated Lin Daiyu. The lead actor, Terry Lim, was chosen out of a ton of applicants from around the world. Joining the ranks is lead actor of “Meant to Be”, the romantic, princelike American director Paul Lee and lead actor of “Music Box”, the charismatic heartthrob Jeffrey Beh!
💥 8 Reasons Why You Should Watch 💥
✨ This marks the first public performance of the stage play “The Dream of Red Mansions” in Malaysia
✨ “The Dream of Red Mansions” is based on the original historical novel
✨ International artist Jessie Chung takes the stage with many experienced actors
✨ Stage backdrops created through the latest 3D technology for stunning, lifelike environments
✨ American musician brought on board to compose the theme song and soundtrack

❤Jessie Chung has performed in stage plays including “The Quatrain of Seven Steps”, “Moonlight”, “Music Box”, “Meant to Be” and more. Her superb acting skills caught the attention of the media and audience alike. She is known for her sold-out performances that are popular with and praised by theatregoers. Paul Lee, who was raised between the U.S. and Taiwan grew to be a character actor and has learned the craft of cinematography and directing under a few renowned in instructors in the U.S. Jeffrey Beh, who has starred in the stage plays “Music Box” and “Meant to Be”, has also starred in several films, short films and music videos that are well-received. Jeffrey Beh is also a director, and he will be directing alongside Paul Lee in an upcoming masterpiece of his, the stage play “Tearless Sky”. Jeffrey Beh, Paul Lee, and Terry Lim all majored in performing arts and music.
❤One of the Four Great Classical Novels, “The Dream of Red Mansions” depicts various aspects of life and is a comprehensive, literary work that embodies the culture and wisdom of the Chinese. “The Dream of Red Mansions” was adapted from true historical events and traces the bittersweet tragedy at the Rong Mansion between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu.
❤It is worth mentioning that many people believe for Lin Daiyu of “The Dream of Red Mansions” to be the epitome of frailty. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Lin Daiyu was a brave and intelligent woman who dared—more than any woman in “The Dream of Red Mansions”—to challenge the worldliness around her. Many liken Lin Daiyu to a lotus, because the flower is known to grow out of the mud unsoiled. The pure and unforgettable love between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu is the most poignant and moving story in “The Dream of Red Mansions”. As for Lin Daiyu’s tears, they should not be simply understood as symbols of weakness. Just as Wang Xifeng used money to perfect her materialistic ways, perhaps Lin Daiyu used a lifetime of tears to perfect her love.
❤ “The Dream of Red Mansions” is set to be staged in Malaysia for the first time, and will transport the audience into the world of the original novel so they can feel its profound literary treasures, enjoy its aesthetical presentation, and experience intensely the artistic charms of this classical masterpiece. Moreover, through the stage adaptation of the original historical novel—“The Dream of Red Mansions”—we hope that everyone will have a deeper understanding of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, who kept their purity even in a filthy world.
❤ “The Dream of Red Mansions” debuts on July 24 at Symphony Theatre. This stage play presented by Symphony Theatre will allow you to intensely experience the artistic charms of this classical masterpiece. Don’t miss it!

“Farewell” described how someone who went through the cycle of a relationship. It’s about breakup, facing the future alone and also reveals the teenage girls inside us. We selected 14 songs from “Over the Sean/Under the Water”, “Pieces”, and “Let’s Go” With the new recording and production, together they told a story.
《Farewell》從EP《Over the Sea/Under the Water》、專輯《散落的時光》與《一起走吧》自選十四首曲子,包括早期「告別系列」的〈以一種假裝放蕩的矜持 與你告別〉、〈告別/再見〉、〈最後 仍在一起〉。

電影經典配樂女人香《Por Una Cabeza》小提琴版本 | Violin cover by Lin Tzu An of Por Una Cabeza
Por Una Cabeza

Here comes cover of the day: the classical music for Argentine tango, and it is also the well known melody deeply loved by fans all over the world.
This beautiful piece of music was showed up in many movies as the background music, among which is the scent of a woman, and was regarded as the brilliant highlight in the film.
The song was at first about the intricate and inseparable love between lovers.
But after watching the movie, I believe tango was given a deeper meaning about our lives.
Tango is not afraid of making mistakes, for you can start over. Tango is not afraid of ending, because you can dance again. So at the moment I realized that our life is just like the endless tango.
TBH, there's a well translated Chinese meaning for Por Una Cabeza, called within a stone's throw.
When facing difficulties in life, we are often discouraged, of course, but just as the characters in the movie who would at times be lonely and confused, and others want to go away and give up, the movie was telling us that life should not just stop there.
hope y’all enjoy the life inspiring tango!
