Today marks the conclusion of the 73rd World Health Assembly, a crucial event in safeguarding global public health, at which Taiwan was conspicuously absent, as the country was not invited to attend despite its excellent record at containing the #WuhanCoronavirus. This clearly leaves a serious loophole in disease prevention. 美國衛生部部長阿薩爾今天圓滿結束這次的訪台行程。離台之前，阿薩爾部長在外交部長吳釗燮和美國在台協會處長酈英傑陪同下，前往台北賓館代表美國人民悼念前總統李登輝，並寫下追思紙條：「李總統傳承下來的民主遺產，將永遠推動美台關係向前進。」

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar concluded his visit to Taiwan today. Before departing, Secretary Azar, on behalf of the people of the United States, paid his respects to former President Lee Teng-hui at his memorial at the Taipei Guest House, accompanied by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and AIT Director Christensen. Secretary Azar wrote the following words on the memorial wall: “President Lee’s democratic legacy will forever propel the U.S.-Taiwan relationship forward.”

Yesterday at a speech at National Taiwan University, Secretary Azar also noted “President Lee is not only one of the great men in Taiwan's history, but in the broader history of Asia and the world's march toward democracy. The democratic legacy he built has made Taiwan a leader not only in freedom and economic growth, but also in global health.”

In the wake of the global pandemic, much of the world has changed. But luckily, here in Taiwan, life remains relatively normal. I wanted to talk a little bit about Taiwan's exemplary response to Covid-19, and compare it to my home country Canada's response. I've interviewed my uncle Gordon, who lived in Taiwan many years ago to get his thoughts, as well as my friend who works in Canada's pharmacy industry. I'm curious what Canada can learn from Taiwan's response in order to improve the situation back home.
