U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar concluded his visit to Taiwan today. Before departing, Secretary Azar, on behalf of the people of the United States, paid his respects to former President Lee Teng-hui at his memorial at the Taipei Guest House, accompanied by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and AIT Director Christensen. Secretary Azar wrote the following words on the memorial wall: “President Lee’s democratic legacy will forever propel the U.S.-Taiwan relationship forward.”

Yesterday at a speech at National Taiwan University, Secretary Azar also noted “President Lee is not only one of the great men in Taiwan's history, but in the broader history of Asia and the world's march toward democracy. The democratic legacy he built has made Taiwan a leader not only in freedom and economic growth, but also in global health.”

Secretary Azar concluded his visit to Taiwan today. This trip marked the first visit to Taiwan by a Health and Human Services Secretary, the first Cabinet member to visit Taiwan in six years, and the highest level visit by a U.S. Cabinet official since 1979.
