My father used to write a column in Forbes magazine. This Forbes piece assessing his legacy sees the Singapore approach as an alternative to the welfare state that has worked.
We rely on free market competition, yet every citizen is assured of good education, healthcare, housing, and retirement. We all have to work hard and save for ourselves and our families, but nobody is left to fend for ourselves alone.
The Government creates conditions for a vibrant economy and good jobs. It builds effective, affordable social safety nets. But it avoids mortgaging our future, and burdening our children’s generation with debts.
We are strengthening our social safety nets, with MediShield Life, Silver Support, etc. But let’s not forget we are not scrapping a bad system, but improving a good one. - LHL

#反送中一週年 [The first anniversary of anti-extradition bill movement]
Tomorrow will be the first anniversary of our anti-extradition bill movement since June. Over the past year, Hongkongers and the world have been bearing witness to the deteriorating situation in Hong Kong, with Beijing tightening its grip over the city’s liberties. Step by step, Beijing is putting this global business centre under its direct control, from suppressing dissents’ voices with excessive police forces, scrapping the One Country Two Countries framework to guarantee supervisory power to China’s Liaison Office, to proposing a CCP-led secret police intelligence agency under the ill-defined national security law. Similar to how it treats dissidents in Mainland China, Beijing is staging the biggest crackdown in the city after the Tiananmen Square Massacre, in a silent but violent manner.
Without legislative scrutiny and public consultation, Beijing is now unilaterally imposing its authoritarian regime on Hong Kong against the will of the people. Even for pro-Beijing side, about 30% of the pro-government supporters oppose a law without legislative scrutiny, according to a recent poll. For any institutional factors that contribute to the success of this international city, from free flow of information, press freedom, freedoms of speech, and human rights protection, China reads them in its tyrannical mindset and views them as a threat to its autocratic control.
The law may raise the costs in the future protests, but Hongkongers will not step down, just like those who fight for freedoms and political reforms under authoritarian rules and places before democratization. The atrocity ahead only makes our democratic crusades inevitable.
Since the freedoms and human rights of our generations are not values that we can compromise, Hongkongers have no way back. Just like the recent Tiananmen candlelight vigil, law and barricades will not put an end to the city’s spirit of resistance. I have strong confidence in Hongkongers that we will have ways to resist and defy. Moreover, I hope the world can stand with Hong Kong and protect the city from falling.

Despite foreign doubts and Hongkongers’ criticism, NPC just passed national security legislation. # China unilaterally imposes the law with its legislation entirely under a black box, with no legislative scrutiny and public consultation.
Today’s decision is a direct assault on the will of Hongkongers. China is also scrapping its promise of autonomy under the Joint Declaration, a legally binding international treaty, and burying the One Country Two System framework when a secret police agency can enforce China’s laws within the territory of Hong Kong.
Up to now, Beijing loyalists keep downplaying the adverse impacts on the city’s judicial independence, human rights protections and civil liberties. Under the similar law in China, individuals seeking justice for Tiananmen Massacre, supporting Umbrella Movement and Hong Kong Protests were sentenced to prison. The law will kill HK’s democratic movements.
With the ill-defined law interpretation and a secret police agency imposed in Hong Kong, the law will harm all foreign interests and ex-pats in this global business centre. Xijinping proposed in 2017 that China’s national security covers economic and social aspects. Under China's wolf warrior diplomacy, foreign companies can be victims under this new evil law.
Clearly, China refuses to address the world's concerns and halt legislation through negotiation. International communities need to take a firmer stance and challenge its assault on our global rule-based system.
Since this new regime will undeniably harm foreign interests, I call upon world leaders to urge China to withdraw the bill. Since the law casts more doubt on HK’s autonomy, I urge the world to reconsider the current HK's special status and take all necessary actions to send a warning signal to China for its reckless move.

The man they once called The Answer was the last player announced. The arena lights were turned off, and a spotlight revealed Allen Iverson.
It was easy to see he really was Allen Iverson. The braided hair, the shooting sleeve, the headband. The swagger. Everything I remembered about Iverson was evident. But yesterday was different than I was used to with Iverson. The crowd treated it like a celebration, but this was sad. Iverson was playing in Turkey, for some team called Besiktas. Things weren't supposed to turn out this way.
This was a former NBA MVP. A 10-time All-Star, 11 if you count last season when the fans voted him in. A four-time scoring champ. This was The Answer. The hero who carried Aaron McKie, Eric Snow, Dikembe Mutombo, George Lynch, Tyrone Hill, Jumaine Jones and Todd MacCulloch to the NBA Finals. Who stepped over Tyron Lue in the midst of a 48-point explosion, in the NBA Finals, against Kobe, Shaq and the Lakers. Who scored at least 40 points 79 times, who scored at least 50 points 11 times, and who is one of only 20 players to score 60 points in a single game. Who helped carry the NBA into the hip hop era, who didn't care if he was misunderstood. Who played as hard as anyone, who never stopped scrapping.
This was Allen Iverson. The man who didn't want to talk about practice. Who reminded fans of another gritty Philly overachiever, Rocky. Who was beloved enough to make people buy Reeboks. Who, even at 6-0 tall (in heels, I bet), even at 165 pounds (soaking wet, most likely), managed to physically dominate world's best athletes. Who brought the killer crossover to new heights. Who sacrificed his body, game in and game out, to lead his teams to victory.
Now I am forced to watch Iverson on ATDHE.net, with the live (and probably illegal) video stream temporarily pausing every minute or so due to poor connection. Is this really what it has come to, a Hall of Famer shamed into playing overseas, with no NBA team willing to offer a contract? Is this really what it has come to, Iverson's struggles forcing us to squint just to remember his transcendent greatness?
