I’ve always wanted to learn a Native American language, but it’s been extremely difficult to find anyone with whom I could learn as most indigenous American languages are considered critically endangered or extinct. So a couple months ago I was extremely excited to get in touch with someone who could teach me Navajo, the original language of the Navajo people who live mostly in the Navajo Nation located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Less than 200,000 people speak Navajo in the entire world. Navajo is hands down the hardest language I’ve ever studied, with extremely challenging pronunciation and one of the most complex grammatical systems of any extant language. It’s so complex that the language was used by the Navajo code talkers as the basis for a secret communication system during World War II.
But even though many young people no longer speak the language, the older generation often still does, and so after a month of studying the language and me and my crew’s COVID vaccinations we flew out to New Mexico to find locals to practice with. Thanks to Raycon for sponsoring this video and I’ll be donating 100% of the sponsorship profits to NavajoStrong, a nonprofit which supports the Navajo community.
Tori Amos
〈Me And A Gun〉Live
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKzCxi2yf5s
〈A Sorta Fairytale〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_C23JCduok
〈Sleeps with Butterflies〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2ZASCOFRtg
〈Big Wheel〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGZCoBIg3dc
〈Lady In Blue〉Live
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSsUzmPcPnI
〈Give〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1B2zluqbTQ
〈Carry〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gzKwOcCOYA
〈Reindeer King〉
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsSBNNjhGJY
〈Leather〉Live
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ggJjD05gOU

The other day I went into a bunch of typical American Chinese takeout restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fuzhounese). Most American Chinese takeout restaurants like this are run by people from China’s Fujian province, so it was fun for them to hear me speak their native but fairly rare language of Fuzhounese!
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions — both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! Thanks everyone for supporting me on my language learning journey!!!

Today I hit the streets of an awesome Latino neighborhood right here in NYC and went to work practicing my Spanish in public, amusing the locals (most of whom are native speakers) with my Spanish, which is fluent but definitely not perfect! I made some funny mistakes, but I also had a great time chatting with people from Mexico and Colombia and other Spanish-speaking countries, and of course enjoying the amazing Latino food of Jackson Heights, Queens! I had a great time making this video and I hope you enjoy it!!!
Remember to check out https://baselang.com/xiaomanyc to get $10 off unlimited Spanish tutoring! Thanks to them for the sponsorship but it honestly is the best way to learn Spanish online and it is how I personally learned Spanish, I think it’s an incredible program!
Learning Spanish through Stories?
The course I used initially to give me a good foundation in Spanish was called “Spanish Uncovered” by the polyglot Olly Richards, which is a way to learn Spanish naturally through stories. I really enjoyed it, and it seems to be an excellent way to get a good foundation in a new language. http://bit.ly/3pPB0we
