今天是農曆立春, 2月也是許多拉丁語系國家的嘉年華時節, Vincent 也將於2/27連假的下午2pm帶領他的【Soy La Ley】古巴爵士樂團 Afro-Cuban Jazz Band參與 2017 Carnaval Taipei 台北拉丁嘉年華 & After Party in Triangle！而除了節慶, 每年2月其實也是 “Black History Month" (黑人歷史紀念月)。

紐約客"New Yorker"雜誌剛發行的2月初號封面, 就是由藝術家Kadir Nelson所畫, 紀念哈林區至今仍致力推廣和保存非裔文化和歷史的中心一Schomburg Research Center。我們之前返回紐約時, 也特別去那裡再次把珍貴的文獻重新閱讀和整理, 並在2013年與臺灣大學藝文中心共同合作了難得的「Soy La Ley 哈林文藝復興計劃」。你可以看到 New Yorker 的封面也同時向許多黑人歷史中的關鍵人物致敬, 包括: 音樂家 Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington; 黑人民權領袖 Malcolm X; 作家 James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston 等。

美國名詩人朗斯頓．休斯（Langston Hughes）的詩作一向平易近人，餘韻佳且與力道十足，如短短三行、十二個字就道盡死亡之冷酷的〈自殺短箋〉（Suicide Note），顯現其對文字、意向的精準掌握。其名作〈露辛妲情歌〉（Love Song for Lucinda）之字句工整簡潔、充滿節奏感，並藉由自然之景物（李子、明星、高山）道出愛情的致命吸引力與強大破壞力，讀來趣味盎然。​

「問世間情為何物？」從上古到當今，詩人寫下的每一首情詩，似乎都在回答這個問題。在形式整齊、句長起伏有致的三個詩節中，詩人用最尋常的意象告訴我們：愛情會令人上癮、專注投入愛情總會受傷、愛得越久，需要越強大的決心毅力。短短幾行樸實的文字，明晰地點出愛情的魅力、危險與挑戰。値得注意的是，在最後一個詩節中，詩人唯一一次打破了字數的對仗，直接呼告讀者（If you），因此這首詩也可視為詩人寫給芸芸眾生的愛情忠告：在越愛越深的同時，別忘了時時補充自己的氧氣。​

是美國相當重要的非裔美籍詩人、作家和思想家，活躍於 1920 年代開始的「哈林文藝復興運動」（Harlem Renaissance），被譽為「黑人族裔的桂冠詩人」。他的詩充滿強烈的種族自尊，歌頌文化多元與平等，譴責歧視及社會不公，這些特質在代表作《那位黑人談河流》（The Negro Speaks of Rivers ）、《我，也，歌頌美國》（I, too, Sing American ）等詩中展露無遺。後人認為，馬丁．路德．金恩（Martin Luther King Jr.）1963 年膾炙人口的演講《我有一個夢》（I Have a Dream ）中，即有許多比喻脫胎自休斯的詩。​

哈林文藝之聲：黑人文學指標性詩人—Langston Hughes

哈林文藝復興 (Harlem Renaissance) 在美國歷史上為非洲裔美國人於第一次世界大戰後，以紐約哈林區為中心而發展出在文學、美學、社會、政治層面上，以非裔美人的角度發聲，藉此表達自我意識的存在，以及他們當時在美國社會所遭遇的處境。在 The New Negro-Voices of the Harlem Renaissance 一書中，編者 Alain Locke 在序中說到：
“…the attitude of America toward the Negro is as important a factor as the attitude of the Negro toward America, we have nevertheless concentrated upon self-expression and the forces and motives of self –determination. So far as he is culturally articulate, we shall let the Negro speak for himself.”

從上文中我們可以感受到當時的美國社會，黑人中產階級在受過高等教育後(Locke 本身擁有哈佛大學博士學位)，急於在美國社會中為他們的族群發聲的渴望。而 Langston Hughes 就是在這一波文藝浪潮中最具代表性的年輕詩人之一，因此我們也希望藉由 Hughes 的文學帶大家一窺當時哈林文藝復興的時代氣氛。更多關於 Langston Hughes 的介紹, 明天見喔！

A short documentary about Bill Saxton, a veteran saxophonist and his intimate Jazz Club in Harlem called Bill’s Place.

Bill was born and brought up in Harlem before his family moved to the East Village. After many decades, he returned to his neighborhood and opened an intimate Jazz club called Bill’s Place at 148 West 133rd Street, in a charming little brownstone apartment. Little did he know that this little brownstone, that can sit no more than 25 people, kept untold secrets and unheard musical notes hidden within its walls.

During the 1920s prohibition era, Harlem’s Jazz reigned supreme. In this musically rich period, a famous speakeasy joint known as Tilly’s Chicken Shack attracted singers and performers and dancers from all over, and it was in same brownstone building where Bill’s Place stands today.

This is the place where Billie Holiday and Fats Waller first performed during their early days. Bill shares this rich history of the golden era of Jazz and swing with his patrons that that flock to this place every Friday.
