We should all do our part to protect the environment. But we should do it thoughtfully, to make sure that what we are doing will indeed make a difference, and be for the good.
This article explains why banning plastic straws and other single use plastics will likely not help the environment. Using metal straws will actually create more environmental costs than disposable plastic straws. So too reusable shopping bags, which need to be used at least 40 times to “break even” compared to single use shopping bags.
There are no easy ways to deal with climate change. But we must do things which make sense, such as switching to LED light bulbs and encouraging the use of public transport.
There is an ongoing public consultation on how Singapore can become a low-carbon city. You can find out more and share your thoughts here: bit.ly/2JG0Gc0 – LHL

Last year, Singapore’s food waste amounted to more than 800,000 tonnes – a staggering amount. National Environment Agency (NEA) tells me food waste makes up half of household waste. And more than half of this wastage is avoidable – roughly equivalent to households throwing away one 2.5kg bag of rice, every week!
This is why I’m glad to see people stepping up not just to cut waste, but to make it easier for Singaporeans to take part. SG Food Rescue collects surplus vegetables from wholesalers to redistribute to those who need them. Unpackt is a packaging-free grocery store that encourages customers to bring their own containers, to avoid plastic waste.
Becoming eco-conscious can start from a simple change of habits. There’s no better time to start than now: 2018 is our Year of Climate Action. Becoming a zero-waste nation will help us become a #sustainable Singapore. Each of us must do what we can to reduce waste. – LHL

2018 is Singapore’s Year of Climate Action. Climate change is a very real worry for us. By the end of the century, Singapore could see temperatures rise 1 to 4(!) degrees, higher sea levels, and more. We have to act now.
The Government is doing its part to tackle climate change, but it cannot act alone. Everyone can make a difference – whether by bringing your own bag for groceries, or setting your aircon slightly warmer. Small changes to our daily habits will help.
The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) has a useful list of suggestions on how we can adjust our routine here: https://www.mewr.gov.sg/climateaction
