“ Chào các bạn, mình vừa thi máy ngày 22/12/2019 ở IDP, được Overall 8 (trong đó có Write 7.5 và Speak 8.0). So với nhiều bạn khác mình không phải xức xắc gì, cơ mà bài này mình mạn phép chia sẻ cách mình học tiếng anh nói chung và luyện IELTS nói riêng. Mình chỉ chia sẻ những gì mình làm và có hiệu quả với mình, một đứa chronic procrastinator và chỉ tiếp thu tốt qua lỗ tai. Phần đầu sẽ nói về việc tăng trình độ tiếng anh nói chung, phần tiếp về việc luyện thi IELTS nói riêng, và phần cuối về việc đi thi và 1 số tips.
Trước hết, có 3 ý mình muốn nói:
1/ Không có secret sauce cho việc học ngoại ngữ hoặc tăng overall band score, chỉ là mình 90% là say mê + luyện tập và 10% là kiến thức (some of which mình sẽ chia sẻ phía dưới). Để luyện tập mà có tiến bộ thì bạn phải có commitment (trách nhiệm & quyết tâm). Và mình commit bằng cách học thêm và tự học với partner. Kiến thức thì đầy trên facebook ấy, khi bạn chưa có ý định thi IELTS thì đọc cho biết và nếu xài được thì tốt. Nếu đã quyết định thi thì không nên đọc nữa, vì nó nhiều và mênh mang, bạn sẽ bị dễ bị tâm lý. Nếu bạn đọc mà không cảm thấy stressed và thấy mình xài được thì cứ việc nhé, còn nếu cảm thấy đọc xong lại thấy kiến thức nhiều quá không biết khi nào học mới hết, thấy mình thiếu sót và thua kém, thì thôi tốt hơn đừng đọc. lúc này là lúc học ít xài nhiều cho quen, và chỉ học những cái chất nhất chứ đừng học tràn lan mà cuối cùng không xài được gì. Nhiều cái chất mình đã học được từ thầy mình, mít tơ Datio.

2/ Cách nhớ tốt nhất là repetition - sự lặp lại.
Lặp lại giúp reinforce kiến thức đã biết. Nếu biết sơ sơ thì sẽ biết kỹ hơn, nếu biết kỹ rồi thì xài được luôn và nó trở thành 1 phần của bạn. Việc này xảy ra khi bạn luyện tập speaking, với bạn trong lớp, study buddy, hay bất cứ ai. Lặp lại giúp ổn định tinh thần, mình sẽ được nói rõ hơn ở phần III - đi thi

3/ Nếu bạn cần motivation, thì phương châm của mình là động lực đến sau khi bạn hoàn thành việc luyện tập, chứ không đến trước, vì trong lúc học nếu bạn nào từng luyện đề, thì nhiều lúc nó tedious và mentally draining (mệt não) lắm. Chỉ khi bạn làm xong rồi thì mới thấy nhẹ nhõm vì biết mình đã hoàn thành một cái gì đó, và nhận biết mình đang có tiến bộ vì việc mình vừa làm (làm xong nhớ review lại coi mình sai gì nha). Điều này cũng đúng khi tự nhiên bạn in the mood có cảm hứng học một hôm, xong hôm sau hết mood không học, xong bẵng đi 6 tháng sau bạn lại có mood, rồi lại xìu không học nữa. Hãy nhớ là cảm hứng đến sau sự cố gắng nhé, và dù hard work có tedious cách mấy, hãy nhớ người thành công là người luôn prepare trong khi người khác đang goof around (đi chơi, lười biếng). Để tập trung luyện tập thì hãy nhớ, ý chí là hữu hạn, nên bạn hãy ưu tiên việc luyện tập trước khi willpower của bạn deplete/drain nha.
Nếu bạn còn một tuần hoặc vài ngày trước khi thi, bỏ qua phần I, II và chỉ đọc phần III thôi nhé. Bây giờ mình bắt đầu nào.

I. Tăng trình độ:
Speaking + Listening:
Bao gồm input (kiến thức_nạp) và output (luyện tập_xuất). Nếu không có in thì khó có out. Nếu không có out thì khó nhớ in.
Input: không có gì mới. coi phim, xem tin tức, xem youtube, đọc/viết review, đọc truyện... về đọc truyện, có nhiều app interactive story, có đồ hoạ đẹp, đọc không dài như sách, và cho phép mình make my own choice, các bạn có thể thử Moments, Choice,… Ngoài ra, mình có sở thích coi phim, ngoài việc tại vì nó hay, mình có thể mổ xẻ/phân tích/bàn luận/ review hoặc đọc review về plot, subplot, characters, acting, direction, dialogue,... nó còn là nguồn để để luyện nghe và lượm từ theo ngữ cảnh. Mình hay binge-watch (luyện) mấy series trên netflix á. Lúc 4 năm trước khi mình thi lần đầu (overall 6.5), mình bật phụ đề việt, vừa đọc vừa tự dịch trong đầu coi nó có khớp những gì mình nghe không, có thì nhớ từ lâu, không thì học từ mới. Sau khi quen rồi thì eng sub thoy. Trong khi coi mình còn làm một việc là observe & analyze pronunciation. để làm được việc này bạn sẽ phải có một chút kiến thức về ngữ âm (Phonetics). (Mình học trên trường đại học môn này và sau đó thế giới của mình đã được khai sáng :D). 4 mảng chính cần tập trung trong phonetics (mình không đi sâu vì nhiều youtuber đã nói rồi, các bạn search là ra):
• cách phát âm nguyên âm, phụ âm. trong nguyên âm có âm dài âm ngắn. trong phụ âm có các cặp âm (âm rung & âm bật hơi thì phải, lâu mình cũng không nhớ nữa)
• intonation (question, statement)
• stress (noun, adj, adv & verb)
• difference in pronunciation of content word & function word. Mình thích bài học này nhất vì nó dạy mình người bản xứ nói lướt chữ như thế nào (vd, từ “to”, “for”, “that”, ”can”, … có các cách phát âm khác nhau), các ca sĩ phát âm cuối và một số từ trong khi hát như thế nào (vd: ”love”, “i”, “my”,…), và mình bắt chước theo.
Output: (self-)study buddy/ partner để luyện IELTS chung. Lưu ý số lượng partner chỉ nên là 1 người, hoặc nhiều nhất là 2, để bạn có nhiều thời gian luyện tập và lắng nghe. Các bạn nên luyện face-to-face, hoặc luyện nói qua voice call mỗi ngày cũng được (nhấn mạnh "mỗi ngày”), cơ mà gặp trực tiếp hiệu quả hơn nhiều nhiều. Hãy cố nói ra những gì vừa học được ở Input nhé. Nói thật thì mình cũng học cà chớn lắm, bữa đực bữa cái vì bệnh lười mãn tính, nước tới chân mới nhảy. Nhưng mà mình nghĩ ở nhà là không làm được tích sự gì nên phải xách mông đi học.
• Luyện pronunciation: mình có bệnh cứ đọc sách giấy là 5 phút sau lăn ra ngủ, vì mình tiếp thu bằng mắt cực kỳ yếu. Tuy nhiên khi nghe thì mình tiếp thu khá nhanh, nên mình hay read out loud để không lăn ra ngủ, và để luyện pronunciation + áp dụng các điểm phonetics ở trên luôn. Một số bạn thì học tốt nhất khi đọc, nên các bạn xem mình tiếp thu tốt nhất qua mắt hay tai hay qua việc vận động, rồi thực hành đọc hay nghe tuỳ theo nhé. Không nên ép bản thân đi ngược lại xu hướng tự nhiên của mình.
II. Luyện thi:
Writing: less is more
Về writing thì mình thúi quắc, hồi trước một bài mình viết hoàn chỉnh chắc khoảng 3-4 tiếng đồng hồ á; nên khi thi lần 2 mình đã đi học thêm và thi máy. They say learn from the best, và the best mình biết khi quyết định bỏ tiền đi học thêm là thầy Datio. Tại sao mình quyết định học thêm thay vì tự học? Thứ nhất, vì mình cảm thấy có thể học được nhiều từ một người thầy giỏi. Thứ 2, vì mình siêuuu lười (hỏi bạn mình sẽ rõ) và là 1 đứa chronic procrastinator, nên việc siêng năng học writing 1 mình trong vòng 3 tháng đối với mình là một sự viển vông, là tự lừa dối :)). Học thêm để có 1 sense of duty/commitment and actually/actively learn something, not goofing around. Và học thêm để hệ thống kiến thức systematically, chứ không học tràn lan. Thứ 3, vì nay đã nghèo còn lỡ đóng một cục tiền, một buổi tính ra 330k no less... thật xót xa T^T, nên mình quyết định học cho nát, cho đáng cục tiền ahuhu.
Mình đã được gì từ khi mất cục tiền?
• Strategy/template: Task 2 thầy dạy nhiều hơn một strategies/templates cơ mà mình nghĩ mình chỉ viết 1 bài task 2, nên mình chọn 1 và chỉ học 1. Bài nào mình viết cũng theo cái template đó sất. Phương châm của mình là less is more, học ít xài nhiều còn hơn học một đống không xài, nên theo mình bạn hãy chọn ra 1 template thấy ưng nhất và stick with it nhé.
• Tăng grammatical complexity, biến/ghép/nối câu đơn thành ghép and phức and ghép phức. Biến chủ động thành bị động. Thêm conditional. Thêm compare/contrast. Thầy có phát cho 1 trang checklist xịn, nếu include được 1 số điểm trong đó thì điểm không dưới 7, với điều kiện phải có accuracy (không mắc nhiều lỗi và dùng chính xác) nhé.
• Học 80 collocations phổ biến nhất và xài được trong bất kỳ hoàn cảnh nào. Sau đó xài đi xài lại (repetition). Không nên ham hố kiếm thêm trên mạng để học nhiều hơn vì sẽ không nhớ và ít xài.
Một điều nữa là time is your greatest asset in writing test, nên bạn nào chưa tự tin với task 1 thì viết task 2 trước nha. Lần đầu mình thi mình viết task 1 hết 40’, còn 20’ cho task 2 :)) . Lần này mình hên task 2 ngay chủ đề tủ environment, nên mình viết nó trước hết 45’, còn 15’ task 1 dạng table. Hên mình thi máy, vì mình hay xoá ý viết lại, mà thi máy cho mình copy paste, nên mới kịp giờ á. Không là teo rồi.
Speaking: học tủ part 2
Luyện đề (hay còn gọi là học tủ) với buddy. Mình không nói bạn viết câu trả lời ra học thuộc, nhưng bạn luyện các câu hỏi trong bộ đề sao cho nó fluent, để khi hỏi lại thì bạn không phải rặn vì rặn sẽ mất fluency. Đề thì trên mạng đầy, nhưng mà bạn nên luyện trước chứ đừng để cận ngày nhé. Đừng để như mình tới khoảng trước một tuần thì mình đã xoắn ghép cực đại, không kịp luyện part 1 hay 3, mà chỉ học tủ một số part 2 thoy. -_-
Đối với part 1 và 3, mình học theo dạng câu và áp dụng các expressions + strategies theo chủ đề. Một số từ/expressions xịn theo chủ đề, và cấu trúc xịn mình đã lựm từ lớp học thêm. Mình học thêm được khá nhiều cho từng part hoặc từng dạng câu. Học build strategies, vd general strategy để làm dài câu trả lời, hoặc để trả lời khi bạn méo bik trả lời, strategy nâng điểm grammar (biết câu đơn thành phức).
Học với study buddy: (mine was Hồng Anh, thi hôm 14/12 - IELTS 7.0)
• To speak English with you day in day out. Dùng những gì mình vừa mới học, như mình đã mention, repetition. Hai điều quan trọng khi học với partner: 1/ các bạn phải feedback cho nhau dựa theo 4 tiêu chí chấm điểm; và 2/ các bạn phải nitpick, bắt lỗi nhau để ensure grammatical accuracy. Mình học speaking với bạn, khi bạn or mình mỗi lần mắc 1 lỗi sai ngữ pháp cơ bản sẽ đóng 1k. (hồi đó mình còn áp dụng mỗi lần ngập ngừng và nói “ờ" là 1k để tăng fluency, để bạn think twice trước khi “ờ”. Mất nhiều tiền bạn sẽ dần dần bớt “ờ" và có thể suy nghĩ/phản xạ nhanh hơn)
• To teach. if you wanna master something, the best way is to teach it. Bạn luyện đề IELTS chung, học xong dạy lại → repetition, để reinforce & apply những gì đã học.
• To thúc đít nhau mỗi khi buồn ngủ. Empower each other and Give each other a sense of duty and commitment. Trong một buổi học với partner bạn hãy đề ra mục tiêu buổi học đó, vd viết xong một bài writing t2, làm xong một test reading/listening,… túm lại là phải đạt được goal mới được về. Mình là chronic procrastinator nên mình chỉ học được khi học với thầy or bạn thoy, còn lại bảo mình về nhà làm bài tập thì được mấy bữa đầu học 1 mình, sau đó phải gặp partner mới mong accomplish anything lol. Anw, hãy mặt dày và clingy trong thời gian học với partner, chiếm hết thời gian rảnh của partner để hẹn hò IELTS nhe.
Một điều lưu ý khi học với partner, là attention span (khả năng tập trung) của chúng ta có hạn. Đối với mình khi học với partner quá 3 tiếng não mình sẽ đình công, hay còn gọi là bị táo bón não, nghĩa là bạn học vô (reading/listening) cũng không được mà học ra (speaking/writing) cũng không xong vì rặn mãi cũng không ra được. Lúc này bạn nên xoã, chuyển qua chế độ học passive, nghĩa là xem phim coi youtube bật nhạc quẩy giải trí đó. Chứ không nên nhồi nhét thêm vì não đã bị drained hết chất xám rồi, học nữa sẽ bị demotivated nhé.
Listening + Reading:
Luyện hết đề trên trang ieltsonlinetests.com. À bạn ơi bộ actual test không nên làm vì đề không chuẩn, nên làm bộ IELTS practice test plus 1,2,3 chuẩn hơn đó nha. Sau khi làm một đề, việc bạn làm sẽ không có 1 cái ý nghĩa nào nếu bạn không biết tại sao mình sai, nên hãy dò các câu sai + các câu chưa chắc hoặc nhất là đánh lụi để hiểu rõ vì sao đáp án nó lại rứa nha. Một tip khi luyện reading nữa là xem expressions của các dạng đề, và chiến thuật để giải quyết bài, làm dạng nào trước/sau để tiết kiệm thời gian, cách sắp xếp của câu hỏi,…cái này học thầy Datio có chia sẻ, and it comes in quite handy.
III. Đi Thi
Phần tâm lý rất quan trọng. Một số bạn chuẩn bị kỹ về kiến thức nhưng bỏ qua phần này, để lúc đi thi thì bị hoảng nên không làm tốt giống nhưng lúc chuẩn bị. Vì vậy phần này mình sẽ viết về việc chuẩn bị mentally/psychologically khi đi thi.
1. Ngày trước ngày thi_setup tinh thần
Nếu bạn là một đứa dễ bị bấn loạn hay bồn chồn trước một cái challenge nào đó, trong trường hợp này là kỳ thi IELTS (especially speaking test), thì có lẽ những típ sau sẽ work for you. Mình mỗi lần đi thi sẽ bị panic attack. Đầu, tay chân và lưng sẽ bị lạnh, cứng ngắc, chuyển sang màu trắng và toát mồ hôi. Hơi thở và nhịp tim tăng, tim đập mạnh, máu khó lưu thông và mình có xu hướng trốn chạy vì sợ hãi. Trong trường hợp đó mình hay làm những việc sau:
Step 1: be mindful of your body and that you are nervous, on edge. Như mình nói ở trên, bạn sẽ thở gấp và các cơ trên cơ thể của bạn sẽ bị căng và cứng. Việc mình làm là slow down nhịp thở, hít vào đếm từ một đến 5, thở ra cũng vậy. Thả lỏng lưng, vai, cổ, đầu, cơ mặt, trán, lông mày (nếu đang chau mày thì đừng chau), mắt, má, khoé miệng. Let it go. Cố đưa nhịp thở về mức bình thường.
Step 2: lặp đi lặp lại với bản thân (repeat the mantra): "mình chỉ vào tán gẫu/chém gió với giám khảo." mình chỉ have a chat with examiner. Nghĩ là mình đang educate giám khảo về bản thân, về những gì mình biết, họ chỉ lắng nghe chứ không judge mình. Đặt mình ở vị thế ngang với giám khảo, thậm chí đặt cao hơn. Để bạn feel better. Và từ khoá ở đây là repetition. Bạn phải làm nhiều lần nó mới hiệu quả nhe.
Nếu bạn nào từng có tiền sử khi bấn loạn thì hay bị đau bụng hay lạnh tay (vì cảm thấy quá quắn quéo), thì mình hay áp dụng kỹ thuật NLP (ngôn ngữ lập trình tư duy). Khi bị xoắn trước khi thi hãy lặp đi lặp lại trong đầu một trải nghiệm làm bạn thấy tự hào. Một tình huống challenging nhưng bạn đã ace/slay it. Recall in detail tình huống/khó khăn đó là gì, bạn đã cảm thấy như thế nào trước khi đối diện với nó. Trong tình huống đó bạn đã làm gì. Và khi đối diện với nó bạn đã slay nó như thế nào. Ví dụ, mình đã tưởng tượng đến hôm thuyết trình thực tập tốt nghiệp của mình. Mình phải nói trong vòng 10' về quá trình thực tập, mình đã học được gì, và đề tài mình chọn. để nói trong vòng 10' mình phải rehearse trước đó. Vấn đề là mình là chronic procrastinator, nên dù có ý định rehearse nhiều lần, mình chả rehearse gì, và trước khi vào thuyết trình tâm lý mình cực kỳ bấn loạn because I was unprepared. Lúc đó mình đã đến sớm, nói chuyện với bạn thân mình, xong quyết định là kemeno và lên thuyết trình thì cứ phọt ra thoy, vì mình cũng khá quen với việc mình làm trên chỗ thực tập. Kết quả là trơn tru, trả lời được câu hỏi của thầy, và đạt điểm A. Mình nhớ lại experience này và tự nhủ với bản thân, là I did it once, i'm gonna do it again. I slayed it once, and i'm gonna do it again. Và repeat it until you believe it. (bản chế từ câu Fake it til you make it.)
Áp dụng luật hấp dẫn. Hãy tưởng tượng bạn đạt được target. Ngày bạn nhận được điểm. Bản sẽ cảm thấy elated/proud như thế nào? Bạn sẽ làm gì? Bạn ở đâu và khoe với ai? Mẹ bạn sẽ nói gì? Thầy bạn sẽ nói gì? Buổi đó là sáng hay tối,... Khoa học đã chứng minh khi bạn muốn gì và phát ra nguồn năng lượng đó vào vũ trụ, vũ trụ sẽ phát trả lại năng lượng cho bạn. Mình không khuyến khích bạn ảo tưởng chỉ mộng mơ nhưng không làm gì. Đây là lời khuyên cho bạn đã chuẩn bị nhé.
2. Ngày thi
• mua kẹo sinh gum bạn hà nhai cho thơm miệng trong khi chờ. helps calm my nerves
• mặc áo khoác len cho ấm
• lặp lại các hình ảnh ở bước 1 trong đầu.
• bắt chuyện với bạn cùng thi.
• gặp giám khảo nice thì nhìn không nice không nhìn. Nếu hên bạn gặp giám khảo thân thiện, hãy cứ nói chiện bt với họ, như mình nói trên hãy từ tốn educate họ. Ở idp có một Examiner khá rude chấm speaking. Bạn nói không thèm nhìn bạn mà chỉ nhìn tay, đồng hồ, hoặc ngồi đếm lông. Lỡ bạn xui dính ông này thì cách tốt nhất đừng nhìn ổng mà nhìn chỗ khác, giống cái bàn hay cái ghế. Nhìn giám khảo bạn sẽ bị mất bình tĩnh (lose your composure). So keep your cool nhe.
3. Sau ngày thi
Không biết các bạn thế nào chứ ngay sau khi thi mình đã tự dằn vặt và nguyền rủa bản thân. Trong đầu cứ suy nghĩ: thấy bà rồi thúi quắc rồi, trời ơi tại sao mình không dùng từ này, tại sao mình không thêm ý kia. Xong ngồi kế cái quạt nghe nó kêu "tạch tạch tạch tạch", thiết nghĩ chắc tạch cmnr, có điềm rồi trời ơi anh muốn em sống sao.
Lúc này bạn hãy cố gắng xoã và distract suy nghĩ sang hướng khác. Mình đã lên youtube movie coi Inuyasha, đi lễ với má để đổi phong thuỷ. Mặc dù mình không theo đạo, nhưng vào nhà thờ cầu nguyện giúp mình tĩnh tâm hơn.

[Muôn thuở] Hãy thi máy nếu bạn type nhanh hơn viết tay or nếu bạn có thói quen bôi xoá, vì thi máy cho phép chức năng copy paste cut, nên lợi về mặt thời gian lắm luôn.
Có kết quả trong 5 ngày. Mình thi chủ nhật thì thứ 6 tuần kế tiếp có điểm. Nhưng mà khâu báo kết quả thì thứ 7 mới có, bạn nào sốt ruột giống mình thì lên trang https://results.ieltsessentials.com/ để dò thì trong tối ngày thứ 5 có điểm. À nhớ gõ chữ không dấu nha, tại có dấu nó không ra.
