Planter with a broad mouth, cylindrical body converging at the bottom, and circular foot-ring. Half of the interior is glazed white, and the exterior is coated with yellow glaze over which shou (壽, longevity) characters are written in red and blue enamel colors. Beneath the rim and around the foot ruyi and transformed plantain leaf patterns are painted. The bottom is unglazed.
Portrait of Empress Dowager Cixi on Her 70th Birthday, an oil-painting by Dutch artist Hubert Vos (1855-1935), shows the empress wearing a gown decorated with the shou character, next to her is a large flowerpot with a shou in which pink peach blossoms is arranged to represent‘the peach of longevity’. These kinds of arrangements of objects with auspicious homophones were popular throughout Chinese history, particularly in the Qing dynasty. Similar examples using the shou character are also found on porcelain.
Yellow Flowerpot with Auspicious Characters (NPM guci 01111) bears the characters ji (吉, luck), xiang (祥, auspicious), fu (富, wealth), and gui (貴, precious) as the main decoration. Within the red characters, there ore green leaves, peonies, and camellias, and lotus. The idea being conveyed is that all living things have a power, of which the plant is the symbol through which the blessing of long life might be conveyed. Paintings with auspicious connotation had become mainstream in mid to late Qing art, the Shou Character Silk Tapestry with one single shou character as the subject is a good example. This fashion also influenced the Empress Dowager Cixi’s choice of décor for planters used
in the court.
