Our first trip to the cinema in over half a year! The kids were so thrilled when I told them we were going to watch a movie today and honestly, it didn't really matter to them what show it was. They were just happy to step into the theatre as we sat back to relax for nearly two hours.
However, there was only one movie that really interested me and made me feel that it was worthwhile to bring the whole family out on a weekend trip to the mall. Yup, Mulan! I was thankful to see how all the patrons were spaced wide apart with well over a 1-metre distance between them. Even our family split up to sit diagonally in two rows at the side and the seats were allocated in such a way that there was no one right in front or behind us. Did we feel safe? Yes, and to be honest, it was better than being in a crowded food court or supermarket.
Back to the movie, I've always loved Liu Yifei's acting and she was the star who shone in this show. Of course, having Donnie Yen (my kids exclaimed 叶问!), Gong Li (she is so gorgeous!) and Jet Li (I almost didn't recognise him) alongside made it even better. Still, Mulan's character stood out and my kids were all very inspired by her and her virtues of 忠、勇、真、孝. She reminded us to be true to ourselves, to accept who we really are deep within and not be afraid to show our true colours to the world.
Did you know? According to the legend, which the big girl read about in her Chinese textbook, Mulan fought in the war for 12 years but her comrades never found out she was a female until she returned to her hometown. She asked me "How could it be that no one realised for such a long time?" which was a hard question to answer but we chose to believe that it was a result of Mulan's perseverance, hard work and her can-do, never-say-die spirit.
So my kids, especially the girls, are feeling exceptionally empowered today. Thanks for making us feel we can all achieve great things in our own ways, Mulan! Yeah, that includes being a stay-at-home mum to these three darlings of mine.
