Travel is full of surprises. Just like life. Sometimes you have to roll with it. Sometimes you just enjoy it. In this case, it was the Spanish-speaking host of our apartment in Cuenca who told me to drive my car to the multi-storey car park nearby and to get back to the apartment, take the lift to the seventh floor and walk back down. It was a shortcut, he said.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We did all that with Google Translate’s Conversation function. I thought I heard wrongly. I mean, sure, I understand driving down the hill to that dingy car park with the dodgy tunnel entrance. But why not just walk back uphill to the apartment? Why must take a lift to the seventh floor and then walk down? How is that faster?
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I listened to him anyway. Drove to the dingy car park. Parked it on the first lot I saw on the second floor. Then took a lift to the top floor, floor 7. Then I came out and saw this view.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What the.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I messaged the wife back after taking a few photos.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You won’t believe the view from the top of this car park, dear! Come, I show you!”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*iMessaged the photo*
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Wife replied, “Wow! I want to see!”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And so I went back to the apartment, and took her back to the car park’s seventh floor via the short way and we enjoyed the view together.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then we realized we stayed too long, and it was getting super cold, and the small town may not have any more restaurants open anymore at 11pm on a Sunday. So we rushed back to the town square to look for dinner.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Phew. Still got one restaurant open. And the food was good too. Heng ah.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

we open in spanish
"Things happen around me everyday, we can't stand aside anymore"
Taiwan is an island country, we seldom pay attention or know what's going on in other countries. We think it's too far from us and we have our own business to mind.
The following is what happened to me when I was waiting for my tram. Ppl sat on left-hand side speak English, and ppl sat on right-hand side speak Spanish or Portuguese. When we got on the tram, we encountered a group of black ppl. Fabian and I thought: were we in Germany or somewhere else?
I aware that we are living in an international and globalized era, we should start to care about the world. Especially like Europe, ppl can go to other countries within one day. Even if we live in an island, we need to connect to the world. I believe there are many ppl aspiring to work or travel in foreign countries, but if you don't even know the culture or things the country you are going to, you will definitely have a cultural shock and frustration after your arrival. Because things you encounter, see and experience are all different from what you thought in Taiwan.
Take myself for example, I always thought Paris is very beautiful and romantic. However, when I arrived, I saw dirty streets and metros, stinks everywhere, and I was afraid of pick-pockets. Currently Paris had several attacks so it becomes a unsafe or unstable city. Ppl even discuss about the freedom of speech and the extremes of a religion. I used to work with colleagues from different nations, if I didn't know their cultures or countries a little bit, I might offend them.
We must be open-minded and try to connect ourselves with the world. If we can understand one's culture and country more, when you are in that country, you can find a balance between you and the country. This way you might find your true self or understand yourself more. Let's try to be part of the world :D

Yes, we drink HOT water…]
In our perspective, it's such a healthy habit to drink hot water. Especially in the morning,in winter, when u just get out of the bed, this cup of hot water warms up your entire body.
But then, I realized, not all see this cup of hot water as we do...
《🇪🇸In the eyes of my Spanish friend》
A friend from Spain came to visit me in Taiwan and got sick after 2 or 3 days, of course I'm the one who was taking care of her.
Once she asked for a glass of water, and as a natural habit I asked her if she wanted it cold or warm. I can still remember the look she gave me, like🤨, then replyed me,
👱🏼♀️" Cold, of course".
Afterwards, she told me that when I asked her that question, she really thought I was messing up with her or sth, because to drink Warm Water, it's like "ewwww" to them.
《🇷🇺In the eyes of my Russian friend》
Unlike us, my friend doesn't have an electric kettle that has hot water in there 24/7, so every morning the first thing I do is to open the gas and boil hot water for drinking (You can't imagine how precious that moment was, drinking hot water in the cold cold morning.)
Finally, one day my friend can't help but asked
👦🏼:" Do you want some tea in it?"
👧🏻:" No, I just want hot water."
Then he murmured
👦🏼:" If people see this, they will think that we are so poor that we can't afford tea so you can only drink hot water."
👧🏻:"...🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I would like tea with milk (as a young generation from Taiwan🤷🏻♀️) but if only Tea..no thanks.
《🇸🇮In the eyes of that Slovenian girl》
One day me and my slovenian flatmate was in the kitchen and she started with this,
👱🏼♀️"Do you guys really drink HOT Water, like it's more healthy or something"
I said yes, and started to tell her what my mom had told me about how bad it is to drink cold water..etc and we chatted more about some other Chinese cultures.
Few days later, I saw her again in the kitchen and she came to me excitedly, telling me that she started to practicing drinking hot water and she can slightly feel the difference in her body, how beneficial it is. And how she would never do that before because warm water tastes...disgusting.
It's just a cup of hot water, but how interesting it is😉
What do you think about "Drinking Hot water"?

I had a great time talking to Steve Kaufmann and learning from his expertise. We met at Polyglot Conference in Fukuoka but this is our first long chat about languages. Steve also surprised me with his Korean, and of course his fluent Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin. He's one of my great YouTube polyglot (or rather, linguist, as he prefers to be called) inspirations. Hope you enjoy the video and learn a lot from him as I did! Press CC for subtitles at 10:58!
Keep an eye out for the interview we did on his channel!

Here's my last vlog from #PolyglotConference 2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. I gave my speech that day, but the full speech will be uploaded on the Polyglot Conference channel on YouTube later. Enjoy some snippets from the event! Btw, it seems lots of people are asking if they can join this event if they're not a polyglot - of course you can! The conference is open to anyone interested in languages. We're all still learning and it's a great way for us to get together and share our love of languages.
