International Conference on History and Culture at ISTAC, IIUM
This morning, I delivered a welcoming speech at this conference as the President of IIUM. The special guest of honour was Honourable Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. His speech was insightful and to a large extent, heavy loaded with many historical facts and great, as well refreshing ideas.
In my welcoming speech, I talked briefly about the need to bring into the study of history 'what if' question. Rarely people ask this question in the study of history (or any other humanistic studies). History is all about options in life and the decisioning process at any turning point in the history. The ability or perhaps the courage to ask this line of question will unleash and unlock many strategic options to be considered in life. On the contrary, if we dont ask this line of question, our mind will be stagnant and 'historical' all the way.
Before I end my speech, I have shared my perspective. I have said thay in order to progress, there is no need to be more pious, conservative and historical. On the contrary, we need to be realist, futurist and be driven by data of the real life.
History provides a bountiful source of material. We need the best tool however to extract the gems and trends (algorithm) from this rich history which is, after all, written by historians. Dont miss the forest for trees.
