(Eng Below)
Strangers!
1. You have only 1-2 shots! (best case, you might get 3!)
2. Do not lose sight of your camera
3. Other tourists also need photos!
4. Your stranger-photographer might end up being your friend of the day

Being a Solo-Traveler, who took my photos?
Is one of the most frequently asked questions as people saw me uploading my own photos without using the selfie stick! So who took these photos?
The Answer is : Strangers!!
Some people are shy to ask others, especially, strangers…. But oh well, if you don’t ask, you don’t have photos of yourself while solo travelling ☺ It’s worth the memory!!
(This album contains photos from the stranger-photograper)
Here are some challenges and key findings of “asking strangers to take a photo for you”
1. You have only 1-2 shots! (Best case, you might get 3!)
Mostly when you hand your camera to a total stranger, you will get 1-2 photos only.
That’s mean before you ask someone to take photos for you, be sure you have the pose you will do on your mind, as well as, the composition. Once you are ready, take a snap of the ideal photo you want, politely show it as reference to the stranger that you want this composition and background and SNAP!!
2. Do not lose sight of your camera
Try to evaluate your complete stranger-photographer to make sure that he/she is someone you can hand your camera to, frankly, someone who isn't going to run away with your camera. However, I cannot say you can be 100% sure if the person is trustable, so I mostly trust my own instinct.
When you find your photographer, do not forget no.1, think of the pose idea before the shooting, so that you won’t be struggling to find the perfect posture and lose your sight of your camera.
There are times when I want some candid shots as well hahahaha, how? This I have to find someone who I think would be safe for me to turn away and let him/her handle the camera. Once I let the museum’s staff took the photo behind me.
3. Other travellers also need photos!
What often happened were other travelleres seeing me holding my camera so then would ask me to take a photo for them. It always comes with a chance for me to ask them back.
4. Your stranger-photographer might end up being your friend of the day
Many times asking a complete stranger to take a photo for you is a beginning of something else. “Are you travelling alone?” “Where are you from?” etc. It is a beginning of a short conversation that might give you a new friend.
Friends from different generation. Friends from different culture.
Once I was sitting on a bench with this aged English man. In front of us was a lake in Milan. I eventually asked him to take a photo of me by the river and that’s the beginning of a warmth conversation. He told me about his trip, his wife and how they would always come there every year.
Various kind of people I talked to: American family, Korean girl, girls from Australia, Italian guy who owns an Antique shop, Italian doctor, A guy from Slovenia, a couple from China, and the tour guides.
These moments sometime lead to dining table where we would continue the conversation during meal ☺
Though traveling alone, you won’t get as many photos as if you were traveling with friends, but traveling alone gives you something new, something unexpected!
*Remark, some of the photos are good and some are very funny, such as the last photo hahahahaha

Isaac, Joy and Papa Go Japan: Day 1 and 2
We picked up our car at Chitose Airport from Hertz/Toyota, after we flew over via Narita. Actually you don’t get the car at the airport but they have a greeting counter there and then a shuttle bus takes you to the huge lot where they have the cars and the rental office.
I got a white Toyota Axio and it was as boring a family car you can get. But you also know it is reliable. I feel like my late father, who drove a Toyota Corolla, and then changed to a Toyota Corolla when the first Corolla’s COE expired. I understand now why he liked these cars. They just work.
My teens were fairly well-behaved in their journey here. They only needed occasional reminders to put away their iPhones and pay attention to their surroundings and do the important stuff first. So my task as driver, tour guide, parent and general do-everything person, was made slightly easier.
They have grown considerably since their last trips with me. Both of them traveled solo with me when they were 12. And now they were older and more mature. It is different to deal with a kid then and now dealing with a teen. What you say to them changes, what you talk to them about, changes too. I quite enjoy interacting with these older versions of my children. There is more to share as their interests get broader.
We didn’t try to go too far on the first day. I was tired from the redeye flight from Singapore to Tokyo and then the 3 hour layover in Narita, followed by the flight to Chitose. So I decided to drive to Lake Shikotsu, in the town of Shikotsukoonsen, on the recommendation of my friends, Mr Miyagi and Tama-san, my remote tour guides from Singapore.
Lake Shikotsu is a lovely place to chill. It’s a beautiful lake and very quiet during this time of the year. We booked an entire house by the lake and spent the afternoon looking for lunch in the small town by the lake.
Our first real meal in Hokkaido was awesome, and a fitting start to the trip. We were reminded by the host of our place to settle our dinner early because shops here close at 4-5pm. So while we were having lunch, we bought our burger dinner across the street. We would heat the burgers up later at the house for dinner while watching Shazam! streaming from my iPhone to the large screen TV in the living room/den.
It’s COLD here. It is 15-20°C in Tokyo but in Hokkaido, we are looking at single digit temperatures. By the lake, the wind chill made it even colder. Good thing I packed the right layers for the kids and myself, and assumed winter weather even though, technically, it’s autumn.
We had the heaters on full blast in the house but even then, our unacclimatized Singapore bodies still needed sweaters to keep warm.
Nightfall came very quickly and it was dark by 4.30pm. By 9pm, we were already in our futons and I was about to doze off. The kids managed to stay up a bit longer watching YouTube on their phones.
I was told some ghost stories by Miyagi and Tama-san regarding the lake area. Shikotsuko is 支笏湖 in Japanese. But sometimes the locals also call it 死骨湖, which is the same pronunciation. There is a lot of algae in the lake, and once you drown, no bones float, which makes it ripe for scary stories.
There is the famous Shikotsuko story of the 100km Obasan. If you drive at night, the 100km Obasan will chase you and if she catches up with your car, you will die.
I decided to not tell the kids the stories until we left the area. I also decided not to drive in Shikotsuko at night hahaha!
The next day, we had breakfast in town and set off, not knowing we were heading next. The kids already know Papa travels by the seat of his pants and just went with the flow. All we needed was this car, some tunes to sing along to, and each other.

Dear friends, this may not be your typical travel advice, but please, please, please, remove elephant rides from your travel plans. A female elephant goes through 20-24 months of pregnancy to deliver her baby, only to be taken from her shortly after. Baby elephants endure cruel training known as “crushing” to learn to obey his/her mahout. Those elephants you see at circuses, at so-called elephant “schools” painting portraits of themselves, at traveling sites offering rides to people, went through that. Your 10-minute ride is one of the biggest contributing factors to their misery.
We can stop this, simply say a resounding “NO!” to such activities, and tell your travel agents, tour guides, friends and family that you do not want to participate in any activities that are associated with animal cruelty. Be an ethical and responsible tourist, and spread the words!

I went on this trip with no plan whatsoever. Literally. I just booked my flight to Krabi Thailand and figured it all out as I went. I stayed at a really cheap hotel near the city center of Krabi, and I went and booked my tours.
The first tour I went on was out to the Phi Phi Islands. It was fabulous. We stopped of at a few different islands on the way as we snorkeled, went fishing, chilled on the beach, played in the water and so much more. The tour guides were fabulous. We took a speed boat that day.
My second day: I rented a motorcycle for 250 Baht/day (aprx. 10 dollars) and I just drove around. I hit up the Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) and hiked up to the top... it was extremely tiring! I felt like Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings when they had to take the back way into Mordor up the big staircase (yes... i totally sounded like a nerd right there) I also hit up the Emerald Pool, hot streams, and anything else along the way.
Third and final day: I took a tour out to Hong Island on a long tail boat. On the way we hit up Red Island and snorkeled there. We stopped at another island... which I have since forgotten the name. and finally we got to Hong Island. We kayaked and it was just a blast.
If you ever want to go to Krabi, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure!
On a technical note:
Film by Nathan Bartling using a Panasonic GH4 filmed at 4K/UHD resolution.
Edited using Premiere Pro CC
Barely any colors were changed in Post Production. This is literally all straight out of the camera. There were three shots that I stabilized at 15% and I believe about 5 shots with little color correction, but besides that it's all straight out of the camera.
I used a Glidecam HD 2000 for all of the smoothe "floating" shots

Direct flights from Fukuoka to Hanoi only take 3.5~4 hours, and run every Tuesday and Saturday, so when Tatsu got 5 days holiday, we knew exactly how we wanted to spend it.
We spent 2 days in Old Quarter, in the heart of Hanoi City, eating all the food, sightseeing, and hanging out with the cool volunteer tour guides from Hanoi Kids ( http://hanoikids.org/ ). I mention that everything is cheap in Vietnam, but to give you an idea of just how cheap, our centrally located Hotel was $28 USD a night, for a room much bigger than any $100 hotel in Japan.
A bowl of Pho will cost about $2 USD. Tatsu and I could have a filling lunch for about $5 USD. Vietnamese Beer costs about $1 USD, and is a welcoming refreshment on a hot day.
Taxis can scam you, so you'll have to be careful and make sure they use the metre when you are riding, but we could get around town for on average, $3-4 USD per ride. Much cheaper than what we pay in Japan. The 40 minute drive to the airport cost $15 USD by Taxi. In Japan you'd expect to pay much, much more for the distance.
For our entire trip we budgeted $300 USD for spending for the two of us ($150 usd each), and we still had money left over by the time we got to the airport to fly back to Fukuoka. We aren't budget travellers and don't try to save money, so if you are someone who prefers to spend less money, it's definitely possible.
Then we took a tour to Halong Bay, a Unesco World Heritage Site, featuring over 1,600 islands. The scale was so vast and incredible, and the tour was really relaxing and a well-deserved break from our busy life in Japan. (Did I mention we had no WiFi, so we were totally disconnected during those two days as well!)
We booked with AClass Tours, and although we booked the "Legend" cruise, we got upgraded to the "Stella Cruise", which was more expensive, nicer bedroom, for no extra cost. ($120 USD for each of us.) The $120 each covered the 3.5 hour shuttle bus round trip, accommodation on the boat (beautiful ocean-view suite), all the national park entry fees (maze cave, floating village), four meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch), free wine tasting on ship, and even my visa letter. (Canadians need to apply for a visa before arriving in Vietnam, Japanese don't. The company I booked through took care of my Visa letter for free with reservation of the cruise.)
I booked on https://www.bestpricevn.com/halongbaycruises/
(This isn't sponsored by the way, I'm just writing this all down because when I was planning the trip I had a really hard time figuring out all this stuff myself. Hopefully this helps anyone who wants to plan their own trip!)
