Spent the afternoon watching Jack Neo’s Long Long Time Ago 2 (我们的故事2) with grassroots leaders from Ang Mo Kio. The movie takes us back to our early years of nationhood. It showed how tough life was in the kampungs, but also how wrenching it was for people to leave their familiar kampungs to resettle into HDB estates. But because of their hard work, and their willingness to change, we built today’s Singapore.
“Nation building” sounds abstract and straightforward. But actually it was made up of the joys and sorrows, the blood, sweat and tears of so many individual families. Jack Neo told the story well - I am sure I was not the only one to tear up during the show.
