平安夜 (Silent Night) 兩百週年：一曲的由來

作曲家-弗蘭茲‧格魯伯Franz Xaver Gruber （1787年-1863 年） 在 1818 年的手稿"Weihnachtslied"。為兩個的人聲和吉他的版本。

這首名曲據說是由約瑟‧莫爾作詞，弗蘭茲‧格魯伯作曲。莫爾（Joseph Mohr, 1792-1848）出生奧地利薩爾斯堡，童年時曾為兒童合唱團的團員，1815年受封為羅馬天主教神父。弗蘭茲‧格魯伯（Franz X. Gruber 1787-1863）是位愛好音樂的教會樂師。

1818年，在奧地利的阿爾卑斯山中有一座修道院，新到任的年輕牧師莫爾獨坐在教堂內，望著教堂裡已經有幾個鍵盤彈不出聲音來的破舊風琴，思考著該如何迎接即將來臨的耶誕夜聚會。這時有位信徒喜添一名新生嬰兒，邀請莫爾牧師前往主持感恩禮拜。莫爾看到他們貧窮的家境與新生嬰兒，想起救世主的降生，激發他很大的靈感，因而寫下了這首蘊藏已久的「平安夜」。之後，牧師交給了他的好友格魯伯來譜曲，格魯伯是當地小學的教師，也是教會樂師。他看了詩之後，不禁歡呼：「莫爾！這正是我們所想要的聖誕詩，願我們的神受贊美！」
聖誕夜，全村的男女老少，都聚集在小教堂里，他們兩人首次以吉他伴奏的方式在教堂中表演這首詩歌，簡單和諧的詞句和旋律卻深深感動了每一位在場的聽眾，許多人都流下了眼淚。

1819年11月，一名工人到教堂來修理風琴，工人請格魯伯來試音，格氏不經意的彈出這首「平安夜」，修琴工人被美妙的音樂所感動，請求給他一份抄本帶回家鄉。鄉里間小有名氣的「史氏四重唱」（Strasser Quartet）是由四位善於歌唱的姊妹所組成，經由她們優美的歌喉將此曲廣為流傳。不過當時此曲是以『Tyrolean』的名稱傳唱，到了1843年才被定名為「平安夜」。

1864年，在德國的皇家禮拜中，詩班為皇帝腓得烈第四獻唱此詩，德王聽完後大受感動，便命令全國往後慶祝聖誕時，都要把這首「平安夜」擺在第一首。

這首聖詩作為民間音樂，從奧地利傳到了德國，隨著德國移民傳播各地，被譯成各種語言而流傳全世界。可是莫爾和格魯伯，直到不久前才被公認為此曲的創作者，唯一留下的是格魯伯那具古老的吉他。每逢聖誕夜，世界各地的教徒們，仍代代傳唱著這首莊嚴、平靜與和諧的聖誕讚美詩──「平安夜」，為肅穆的聖誕氣氛增添了一絲溫馨與感動的氣息。
