Multiculturalism is a foundational value of Singapore. Our multi-racial, multi-religious harmony is precious. It can easily be destroyed by thoughtlessness or hatred. By celebrating one another’s festivals, we deepen mutual respect and understanding, and become a more cohesive nation.

Today is the holy festival of Thaipusam, which honours Lord Thendayuthapani, also known as Lord Muruga, the God of valour and youth.

In more normal times, devotees would carry paal kudam (milk pot) and kavadis in a colourful procession of thanksgiving. This year, due to the pandemic, there will be no foot procession, but registered devotees can fulfill their vows by offering paal kudam at Sri Thendayuthapani Temple.

I wish all devotees a blessed Thaipusam. It may be a muted festival with controlled crowd numbers, but I hope you can still show your devotion in your own ways. – LHL

பொங்கலோ பொங்கல்!

Today is Pongal. I wish all Singaporeans celebrating it “Happy Pongal”!

Pongal is a traditional Tamil harvest festival. It marks the beginning of the auspicious month of Thai and is celebrated over 4 days. Families decorate their houses with kolams (also known as rangolis) and sugar canes, light oil lamps, and in a new pot, cook rice with milk and jaggery. The milk is allowed to boil over to symbolise luck and abundance.

【宜蘭蘭陽媽祖隊伍抵達羅東震安宮】

震安宮是羅東鎮上最早的「媽祖廟」，於清道光17年建廟。民國12年，因地震而震倒，信徒再次捐款整修，廟名也因此定名為「震安宮」。

海神天后-媽祖，台灣重要神祇，傳說於海難中救人無數，保佑航行安全，後因聞聲救苦，為民解難事蹟不斷，逐漸成為常民百姓的共同信仰，流傳千年不斷。

媽祖遶境是台灣最重要的宗教民俗活動之一，許多民眾會排隊歡迎媽祖神轎到來，並跪在地上從媽祖轎下鑽過去，俗稱「躦轎腳」，藉以得到媽祖保佑。

台湾の重要な神様 海の守護神-媽祖，難破船には無数の命があると言われて，航行安全を祈って，痛みを聞いた後、人々が困難な問題を解決するために、徐々に一般の人々の共通の信念になり、何千年にもわたって広がる。

媽祖神輿巡行は台湾で最も重要な宗教的民俗活動，民衆たちは媽祖神輿の到着を歓迎するために並ぶ，そして拝跪して　媽祖神輿の下からくぐり抜ける，「躦轎腳」と言う，媽祖の祝福してもらいます。
　
§北台灣媽祖文化節§
自 2004 年起，北臺灣媽祖文化節始由北臺灣八個縣市政府及輪值宮廟共同辦理，今天邁入第16年，首度輪到南方澳南天宮舉辦，並邀請相關縣市媽祖廟宇之代表及宜蘭縣內各廟宇參與會香。

相對於臺灣西部媽祖廟多為分靈，宜蘭則以獨立香火為主，造就出獨樹一幟的信仰特色，諸如頗具盛名的金媽祖、玉媽祖、珊瑚媽祖，還有全台灣唯一隸屬海軍管轄的北方澳媽祖廟等，再再揭示宜蘭媽祖信仰的獨一無二，以及獨特深遠的海港文化。

§ North-Mazu Cultural Festival §
Since 2004， the North-Mazu Cultural Festival is Co-administered together by eight county and city governments in northern Taiwan and the rotating temple ，today is the 16th anniversary，it’s the first time administered by Nan Tiang Temple from Nanfangao, and had also invited temples which are related with Mazu and temples from Yilan county.

Comparing the Mazu temple from the east coast, Yilan are more independent from the spirit, so that’s why they had built their own religion culture, such as the famous Golden Mazu, Jade Mazu, Coral Mazu, and especially Beifanao Mazu temple, the only one which related to the Taiwan Navy, these temples had reminded again and again the unique Mazu religion and far-reaching harbor culture.

§北台湾媽祖文化の日の§

２００４年から起きて、北台湾媽祖文化の日は初めて北台湾から８カ所の縣市政府と順番な当番の宮の廟は共同でして、今日第１６年に邁進して、初めて南方澳の南天宮の番になって開いて、そして関係の縣市媽祖の廟を招き代表して宜蘭県下のそれぞれの廟参与会は良い香りです。

台湾西部の媽祖の祖廟に対してどれだけか霊として、宜蘭は独立の良い香りの火を主とする、独自の旗印を掲げた信心特色を育成し出して、例えば非常に立派な金媽祖、玉媽祖、珊瑚媽祖を備えて、それから台湾の一つだけをそろえて海軍管轄の北方澳の媽祖の祖廟などに所属して、再三宜蘭媽祖信仰した唯一無二及び、独特な深遠な海港文化を張り出します。
