Press statement by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Malaysia

I condemn in the strongest terms, the violence which took place at the AFF-Suzuki Cup semi-final fixture between Malaysia and Vietnam at the Shah Alam Stadium last night. Although only a small segment of Malaysian fans turned unruly, their violent conduct directed at visiting Vietnamese fans was completely unacceptable and has tarnished Malaysia’s reputation.

This is clearly not the Malaysian way. Violence is not and was never part our culture. The vast majority of Malaysian fans were respectful, courteous and hospitable last night, and I am saddened that the football match was marred by the actions of a small number of hooligans

I would like to apologise to the Vietnamese fans for the behaviour of these unruly fans, whose actions have been condemned by many Malaysians.

I have spoken to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police and have asked the police for cooperation in expediting the investigations. Given that the photos of the assailants have been widely circulated on social media, I hope that the police will swiftly bring those responsible to justice.

I also called the Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Pham Cao Phong, and I reiterated my apologies to the Vietnamese fans for what transpired last night. I assured him that the police will be proactive and swift in their investigations.

At the same time, I requested from the Ambassador safe passage for our fans who will be travelling to Hanoi for the second leg of the Malaysia-Vietnam match on Dec 11. He assured me that the safety of Malaysian fans travelling to Hanoi will be looked after by Vietnamese authorities.

In light of this incident, I urge Malaysian fans travelling to Hanoi to take all necessary safety precautions. While we appreciate the safety assurance given by the Ambassador, tensions are still running high. I hope that all Malaysian travellers will be not only be careful, but more importantly, be responsible and respectful.

Sports is meant to unify and bring people together. Likewise for the AFF-Suzuki Cup, it is meant to unite the Southeast Asian community in the spirit of friendly competition. Not only am I disheartened by the mindless acts of violence last night, I am deeply disappointed that we failed to show the Southeast Asian community that we can lead by example through our sportsmanship on and off the field.

[VIDEO] Schools to teach Southeast Asian languages
Tagalog, Bahasa and Vietnamese taught in Taiwan's schools? That's right! Starting next year, Taiwan will begin requiring all schools with children born to a Southeast Asian immigrant to teach the language of that parent. Right now, the only mother tongues schools have to teach are Minnan, Hakka, and indigenous languages. But in 2019, schools will have to teach some or all of the languages spoken in seven Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. Taoyuan City's Dongan Elementary School has already been doing this for the past five years. Take a look.

Aside from some life updates, I opened up about being SE Asian and struggling with glorifying E Asian beauty standards (and why I stopped listening to K-Pop). I'm usually pretty reserved and don't open up about a lot on my channel but this is something that's been asked about pretty often (since I've touched on it briefly in the past) and wanted to share with you. Finally, the much requested video in Vietnamese ?
Honestly, the reason it took me so long to actually get to filming this was because I wanted it to be perfect. I post a lot about how proud I am to be Vietnamese (because it took so long for me to learn about and appreciate my culture) and so I thought posting a video in which I wasn't fLuEnT would be disappointing to a lot of you guys.
But in reality, I am a Vietnamese-American/second-generation immigrant who has spoken English for the majority of her life. And although I am still trying to learn more Vietnamese and can share this through my platform, it would be unrealistic to front as if I were fluent. Hey guys! For those of you new to my channel, hi! I'm a polyglot YouTuber from South Africa and this is my wacky channel intro. My aim for this video was to see how fast I could switch between languages mid-sentence, mid-thought or mid-conversation. It might confuse you to follow all the switches, so I added flags to indicate the language at the top right, and I kept English subtitles for every spoken part.

I always try to be honest and transparent with you guys - so here's my real, unscripted, updated polyglot self introduction/channel intro!

Kinda nervous to upload this cause you guys can totally see how I haven't improved much since the previous polyglot video, har har.
