【8/21清晨「美國大日蝕」 數百萬人爭睹天文奇景 NASA將直播】

8月21日清晨登場的「美國大日蝕」(Total Solar Eclipse)天文奇景，從俄勒岡州到南卡羅來納州，跨越地區總長113公里皆肉眼可見，預計將有數百萬人爭睹。

本月21日太陽、月亮和地球將排成一條直線，月影把太陽整個遮住，使白天變成夜晚，而且這種日全食的路線是近百年來首次橫貫全美，從太平洋岸到大西洋岸都可以看到這種天文奇觀。

月亮運行到太陽與地球正中間造成的日全食，通常每一、兩年或三年就出現一次，可是這種現象通常發生在海上或人口稀疏地帶，美國大陸這次卻難得的處於中心位置。

這是99年來首次有日全食橫貫美國東西兩岸，也是美國大陸任何部分38年來首次出現日全食。

月亮將在俄勒岡州林肯市附近開始遮住太陽展開日蝕，在南卡羅來納州查爾斯頓附近離開太陽，整個過程持續四個小時。太空總署(NASA)將經由電視和網路播出整個天文秀。

在日蝕以時速超過1500哩橫貫美國兩岸過程，只有1個半小時出現日全食，從美東時間大約下午1時15分展開，2時49分結束。屆時可以看到太陽外圍平常看不到的日冕光圈(corona)。

能看到日全食現象的範圍只有大約60哩至70哩寬，而從俄勒岡到南卡羅來納，這個狹長地帶上的市鎮都在積極籌備各種日蝕派對，葡萄園、釀酒廠、博物館、公園、大學、體育館，幾乎每一種設施都熱烈參與。

在俄勒岡州，日全食造成的幽暗將持續不到2分鐘，在伊利諾州南端的Shawnee國家森林達到最長的2分鐘44秒，到南卡縮短到2分半鐘。

美國估計有2億人住在日全食路線所經一小時車程內，因此可望引發觀賞熱潮。公路管理當局已警告旅客要有耐心和小心。

天上的各種衛星和地面望遠鏡將對準太陽和月亮的影子，國際太空站上的太空人將用攝影機拍攝，許多船隻和飛機也將追逐日蝕進展。

研究人員和其他好奇的人也將觀察白晝突然變成黑夜時，動植物會有何反應。屆時昏暗的天色將如有薄暮時分，氣溫也將下降10至15度。

在較外圍地區觀測景象也不錯，明尼亞波利市可看到86%日蝕，邁阿密可看到82%。

月（つき）は、地球の周りを公転する唯一[1]の自然の衛星。
月の性質

直径は地球の約0.2724倍 (1/3.7)。これは地球サイズの惑星をめぐる衛星としては非常に大きいものである 。惑星と衛星の比率としては太陽系で最も大きい。また月の直径 (3,474km) は、木星のガニメデ (5,262km)、土星のタイタン (5,150km)、木星のカリスト(4,806km)、木星のイオ (3,642km) に次ぎ、衛星としては太陽系で5番目に大きく、太陽系の衛星の中でも巨大衛星として扱 われている。月と太陽の見た目の大きさ（視直径）はほぼ等しく、約0.5度である。こ のため、他の惑星とは異なり、太陽が完全に月に覆い隠される皆既日食や、太陽のふちが わずかに隠されずに残る金環日食が起こる。月の視直径は、腕を伸ばして（約50cm） 持つ五円玉の穴（直径5mm）の大きさとほぼ同じである。

月の形状はほぼ球形だが、わずかに西洋梨型をしている。質量はおよそ地球の0.012 3倍 (1/81)。表面積（3793万km²）は地球の表面積の7.4%に相当 し、アフリカ大陸とオーストラリア大陸を合わせた面積よりもわずかに小さい。地球中心 から月の中心までの距離（平均）は、38万4,403km。
