1977年，在貝雅士蓄水池上段的開幕會上，當時的李光耀總理發表了一段振奮人心的演講，宣布要打撈清理新加坡河和加冷河。

In 1977, at the official opening ceremony of Upper Pierce Reservoir, the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew gave a rousing speech, announcing the cleaning up of Singapore River and Kallang River.
He said, "It should be a way of life to keep the water clear, to keep every stream, every culvert, every rivulet free from unnecessary pollution. In ten years, let us have fishing in the Singapore River and fishing in the Kallang River. It can be done.
The day we achieve that [clean river], whoever has been in charge for the last ten years or for the next ten years, if I am still around, I will give each one of them – both the Minister, the Permanent Secretary and the head of department – a real solid gold medal, one troy ounce. I don’t care what the price of it will be… But if it isn’t done… If I am still around and in charge in 1986, I will find out where it went wrong and whoever, whichever group of people made it go wrong and failed… Well, I have got special pieces of lead – not for striking medals – I think I’ll add it to their water supply."
Singapore River is 3.2km long. Kallang River is 10km long.
There were pig farms, squatters, street hawkers, vegetable sellers, shipyards (for building tongkangs) beside Singapore River, causing all the pollution.
Tens of thousands of people. A river with decades of pollution.
A blind telephone operator worked in the law firm of Mrs Lee Kuan Yew, which was at Raffles Place. He took the bus to work every day and always knew when to get off the bus. For the river was so smelly that he could smell it, as the bus crossed the river.
Yet all it took was one man to say and believe "It can be done".
With that, everything else was set into motion.
For the sake of his country and the many generations after, Mr Lee Kuan Yew took an unprecedented first step and kickstarted unimaginable drastic changes.
Here's some courage and wisdom for you! I hope you can change for the better for yourself and your family and nab that special gold medal for your Destiny!

Term 3 of the school year started today. For many students, it was the first time back in school after almost two months — students did Home Based Learning when the circuit breaker began in April, and had their mid-year school holidays in May. I’m sure many of you were excited to see friends and teachers again!
HBL had become the ‘new normal’ during the circuit breaker. Today as we start Phase 1 of our safe opening, there will be yet another ‘new normal’. Students and teachers returned to a different environment than when they were last in school.
Parents will understandably be anxious for their children. Rest assured that the Ministry of Education, Singapore has taken comprehensive measures to keep students, teachers, and staff safe. We will take time to get used to the precautions, but they are necessary to protect everyone. Meanwhile, we are watching the situation closely, and will do everything necessary to gradually resume our normal activities while keeping teachers and students safe. – LHL

I've only been 31 for just over a week and I gotta say, I am LOVING IT. I honestly feel like I've been so blessed this year that I just cannot ask or want anything more. Thank you for spending yet another year with your girl. Know it means everything to me.
We're currently in New York and although it started off being slightly chaotic, it is ending very well. The book signing event was EVERYTHING I could ever dream of and more. Thank you SO much for taking precious time and energy to see me. It was such an incredible night. My book was completely sold out which was unexpected. While i'm so happy to have met so many of you, I'm also saddened to know I missed a lot of faces too. I can only apologise. I'm so sorry things weren't planned as well as expected. I guess nobody anticipated the turn out to exceed the expectations. The book signing ended up being rushed because I knew people have been queueing for HOURS and I wanted to make sure all their books would be signed. I promise I did everything I could last night. Nevertheless, know your girl truly appreciates your love and support. Thank you for celebrating such a meaningful night with me and whether you could make it or not, you guys were all with me spiritually. I love you all!!! Thank you for making my dream become a reality. This book belongs to all of us.
