It’s movie night! Picasso!
Watch this speedy clip of Pablo Picasso a Vallauris di Luciano Emmer, as the Italian director captures the artist as he deftly and with great confidence, alters a large wheel thrown bottle into the shape of a waterfowl. Picasso typically commissioned an artisan to make these; here Jules Agard is at the wheel, working right along with him. In 1953 Emmer spent a month with Picasso in Vallauris during which he filmed the documentary from which this clip was taken.
These excerpts from an essay by the curators of the first comprehensive survey* of Picasso’s works in clay, shed some light on his relationship with the medium:
“Picasso began to work in the ceramic medium in 1946 after visiting the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris, where the mineral-rich soil of this region of southern France had supported a ceramics industry since Roman times.” And, “In the earliest stage of his work in ceramics, he focused on mastering the craft aspect of decorating fired clay objects, working on more than a thousand pieces at the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris during the first year alone. Quickly acquiring knowledge of the technical aspects of working with clay, he then set about reinventing them to suit his fertile imagination.” Please note that this video was sped up so that all content could be squeezed in. -\-\#PIAguesthostBirdieBoone
