Here are some iPhone video tips shared by Jin Chong:
"1. Always ready. The great thing about carrying the iPhone as my primary shooting device when I’m travelling is it’s simple yet so powerful. It’s always ready to capture any moment I encounter with the quick camera access. I often see a moment coming up, that is when I will pick up the iPhone from my pocket, and swipe the camera icon at the bottom right corner of the lock screen to open the camera app instantly, and start recording. And because the camera comes with auto-exposure and auto-focus, I often get the proper balance and sharpness on my shot.
2. Stay focused. I like to frame my shot and capture it as the moment passes.It’s really easy to get that perfect long shot I require with the AE/AF Lock (auto-exposure/auto-focus lock). It is specially useful when I am filming moving objects, or moving person. To use this camera feature, press and hold on your focal point until you see an AE/AF Lock appear at the top of the frame. While holding on the focal point, you can adjust to exposure to your liking, before pressing recording. AE/AF lock works on slow-mo too!
4. Slow-mo. Everything looks more interesting and twice more dramatic in slow-mo video. But when you are running out of storage (too much fun with slow-mo), switch the 240fps to 120fps setting for instant storage saving!
4. Composition. Photography composition rules are applicable for video shooting too. For a long video shot, I often frame my subject along the rule-of-third lines, i.e. placing the subject off-centre to create a more interesting visual. Experiment with other composition rules to create stunning visuals.
5. Have fun. Climbing live volcanoes in Indonesia, bracing winter in snow covered Nagano, riding past hundreds of centuries old temples in Bagan, using the iPhone for travel photography meant that I could have more fun travelling with minimal gear and maximum mobility, but still end up with great shots!"
