Once in a blue moon：天空出現藍月亮

週五晚上，天空出現罕見的藍月，這是三年來的第一次。與此同時發生的天文現象，還有英仙座流星雨（Perseids meteor shower）。

所謂的藍月，指的是同一個陽曆的月份裡，發生兩次滿月的現象。這之所以罕見，原因是月亮圓缺的循環乃是 29.5 天。

週五晚上的藍月也是「超級月」（supermoon），因為月球位置最靠近地球，稱之為近地點（perigee）。意思是肉眼可以見到的藍月顯得特別亮、特別大。

為什麼稱它為藍月？根據牛津字典，英文中第一次出現藍月的用法，是在 1528 年，當時有一句成語說：「如果他們說月亮是藍色的，我們就得相信它是真的。」（If they say the Moon is blue, we must believe that is true.）

為什麼在一個月裡兩次滿月會稱之為「藍月」，原因不明，有人認為那是因為該詞意謂著「叛月」（“betrayer” moon，“betray” 在古英文裡為 “belewe”，近似 “blue”）。

然而藍月並不代表月亮是藍色的。月亮偶爾看起來是藍色的原因，有可能是火山爆發，火山灰在大氣中形成屏障，影響了進入肉眼的光譜。

上一次的藍月，發生在 2012 年的八月，下一次的藍月，將發生在 2018 年的一月。天文學家表示，從今年到 2043 年為止，藍月只會再發生十二次。

週五晚上的藍月，也開啟了英國地區可以觀賞到的英仙座流星雨季節。這將持續到明年一月為止。不幸的是，當晚的月光太明亮，反而會影響到流星雨的可見度。想要觀賞流星雨的民眾必須等到八月七日以後，等到月光減弱後，英仙座流星雨現象可望在 12 日到 13 日達到高潮。

日本人に馴染みのない？「Get to」の活用法

「Get to」というフレーズは色々な意味を成すフレーズですが、今日はその中でもネイティブはよく使うものの、日本人にはあまり使われていないと思われる表現方法をご紹介します。

1) I got to meet the president.
→「社長に会う機会がありました。」
--------------------------------------------------
　
この場合の“get to”は「何かをする機会を得られる」を意味し、“Have the opportunity to”の代わりに使われる口語的な表現の仕方です。例えば、「セミナーで多くの人たちと会う機会がありました」は「I got to meet a lot of people at the seminar.」になります。
　
✔“Get to”を“Be able to”に置き換えることも出来る。
　
✔“Get to”の後は動詞がフォローする。
　
＜例文＞
　
I got to test drive a Lamborghini last week.
（先週、ランボルギーニを試乗する機会がありました。）
　
Did you get to talk to the baseball players?
（その野球選手と話すことが出来ましたか？）
　
I don't get to travel very often.
（私は旅行をすることがほとんど出来ません。）

2) He got to go home early.
→「彼は早退することを許された。」

「（特権として）何かをすることが許される」の意味として使う表現で“Allow to”や“Have the privilege to”のインフォーマルな言い方です。例えば、会社の上司が好きな時間に出社できると言いたい場合は「My boss gets to come into work any time he wants.」となります。
　
✔“Get to”の後は動詞がフォローする。
　
＜例文＞
　
He gets to work from home.
（彼は自宅で仕事することが許されています。）
　
Why does she get to take the day off?
（何で彼女は休暇をとることが許されるの？）
　
You get to play video games if you finish your homework.
（宿題を終わらせたら、ビデオゲームをしていいよ。）

3) It will get better once you get to know more people.
→「より多くの人を知るようになれば、楽しくなります。」

何かを徐々に知っていく、理解していく、感じるようになるなど、“Start to”と同じ意味合いで「〜をするようになる」と表現する場合にも“Get to”が使われます。例えば、「大人になるにつれ、健康の重要さを理解するようになった」は「I got to understand the importance of health as I grew older.」と表現できます。
　
✔Know、Understand、Realize、See、Feel、Appreciateの動詞と組み合わせて使われることが多い。
　
＜例文＞
　
I got to know her personally once I started working with her.
（彼女と一緒に仕事をし始めてから、彼女のことを個人的に知るようになった。）
　
What do I need to do to get my wife to appreciate me?
（妻に感謝されるようになるには、どうしたらいいのでしょうか？）
　
I got to understand what it feels like to be a foreigner when I went to China.
（中国へ行った際、外国人とはどういうことなのか理解するようになりました。）

4) He really gets to me.
→「彼にイライラする。」

何かにイライラしたり不快に思う気持ちを表す際によく使われる表現で、“Annoy”や“Bother”と同じ意味合として使われます。特に何かを失敗をしたり、誰かに癇に障ることを言われたりなどして、そのことが頭から離れず、他の物事に集中できなくなるニュアンスが含まれます。
　
＜例文＞
　
This humid weather is really starting to get to me.
（この湿気にイライラしてきた。）
　
Don't let it get to you.
（そんなこと気にすることないよ。）
　
Why do you let little things get to you like that?
