Thanks to #AustraliaWildfireFund partner Aussie Ark, there’s renewed hope for the Endangered Manning River Turtle, a wildlife species hit hard by the wildfires in Australia. The team recently launched an emergency mission to move a number of adult turtles from their dried-up habitat to larger waterholes, and also rescued 12 eggs that will now be incubated at Australian Reptile Park and then released back into the wild after they hatch. In addition, the team collected three turtles to establish the first-ever Manning River Turtle conservation breeding center for the long-term survival of this special freshwater species. #TurtlePower

When traveling you always expect to visit that place that will blow your minds where you would say “I must come back!”
Yesterday I did a one day trip on Ladyelliot Island , a true coral cay island located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Only accessible by small plane, this place is a little treasure. I was lucky to observe some massive #humpback whales from the diving boat, a gorgeous manta ray and snorkeling in the lagoon with a young #Hawksbill turtle, a critically endangered species.
You have the possibility to stay over night on the island by booking in advance as there is a limited amount of rooms to control the number of visitors and protect this little paradise. A must place to visit. 🇦🇺🐋🐠

【The Cat Paradise Matsu Island TNR Project】
The Cat Paradise Matsu Island TNR project aims to humanely reduce the number of feral cats decimating the wild bird population on the island.
It is estimated that there are 100 or more in the 1st village and volunteers will travel to the Matsu to TNR (Trap Neuter/Spay Release) the cats to prevent them from breeding. The volunteers aim to TNR at least forty of the estimated one hundred feral cats over a four-day period.
★Round 1: Dec 27-31, 2017
3 vets/5 volunteers/23 cats fixed and TNR
★Round 2: Apr 14-17, 2018
5 vets/9 volunteers/target 80-100 cats
Background on Matsu and the feral cat issue:
Matsu Islands are named after the goddess Matsu and are located between Taiwan and China and consist of five major islands and 19 islets. Matsu islands are famous for their historical sites and beautiful scenery. In 1990, the Matsu Islands Bird Sanctuary was created in order to provide protection to thirty species of birds, some of which are critically endangered but threats to their survival remain. One of the threats to the birds in this sanctuary is the high number of feral cats who hunt the birds.
The government has dedicated few resources to reduce the number of feral cats and is opting to reduce their numbers by culling. Culling results in needless killing of cats and alternative methods of population control exist. The humane alternative is to TNR the cats so they are unable to breed thereby resulting in a lower population of cats and reducing the number of birds killed by cats.
