Allen Iverson's eighth career 40-point game had a nice little unexpected bonus -- a victory for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Iverson scored 41 points, upstaging Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, as the 76ers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 105-90, for their fourth win in five games.
In two-plus seasons, Iverson had seven previous games with 40 or more points and the 76ers lost them all. On February 12, the NBA scoring leader had a league season-high 46 points in a 98-94 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
"When I score 40 points, we've lost," Iverson said. "Tonight, we won, and I guess I finally got the monkey off my back. I didn't know what I had until I came out of the game at the end and looked up at the scoreboard. I saw what I had and said, `I hope it doesn't come back to haunt me.'"
Working primarily against Philadelphia native Bryant, Iverson shot 17-of-36 from the field. He scored between nine and 12 points in every period and added a season-high 10 assists and five rebounds.
"I wanted to get off to a good start," Iverson said. "Some earlier shots were going off the rim, then all of a sudden, my shots began to drop. My teammates began to get the ball to me, they did a good job as always of getting me the ball in the right spot, and I was able to make the big shots at the end."
"The little kid was phenomenal," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "I had to take him out at the beginning just to calm him down because he was really wired. Yeah, he took a lot of shots, but for the most part, his selection was good."
With 55 seconds left, he exited to a thunderous ovation and a chant of "Beat LA" from the First Union Center crowd that recalled the rivalry between these teams from a generation ago.
O'Neal and Bryant scored 23 points each for the Lakers, who fell to 1-3 on their six-game road trip. Los Angeles has lost its last three meetings with Philadelphia, with Iverson averaging 34.3 points. The 76ers had not beaten the Lakers three straight times since the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons, when the teams met in consecutive NBA Finals.
"This team has come a long way," Brown said. "I hope we can keep a level head, where they can expect to play well against the good teams, as well as playing well against teams with records worse than theirs."
Lakers forward Dennis Rodman missed his fourth straight game due to an excused absence for personal reasons. With the mercurial Rodman in the lineup, Los Angeles is 9-0. Without him, it is just 8-9.
"We'll welcome him with open arms when he comes back," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "But I have no idea when he's coming back."
"He's obviously a factor," O'Neal said. "He has personal problems, whatever that means, nobody really knows. I don't think about it. I know the organization will do what they have to do."
O'Neal was saddled by foul trouble, eventually fouling out with just four rebounds midway through the final period. He also missed 5-of-12 free throws and committed five turnovers.
Iverson thoroughly outplayed O'Neal and Bryant in the third quarter, when the Sixers took control. After a 3-pointer by Glen Rice -- his first basket of the game -- gave the Lakers a 56-54 lead, Iverson made a jumper and 3-pointer and set up two baskets during a 12-2 burst that gave Philadelphia a 66-58 lead with 5:50 remaining.
Iverson buried a 22-footer to trigger a 6-0 spurt. Tyrone Hill and Aaron Mckie made free throws before Iverson fed Theo Ratliff for a dunk and a 74-62 bulge with 2:02 left in the period.
"For the most part, we did what we wanted to do," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "We forced him (Iverson) to take a lot of outside shots. Unfortunately for us, he made a lot of them."
"Coach Brown noticed that we didn't defend the pick-and-roll very well, so he let Allen run the pick-and-roll and they did a very good job of setting screens and getting him open," Bryant said.
O'Neal and Bryant combined for no baskets in the third quarter as the Lakers shot just 17 percent (3-of-18). Iverson scored 11 in the period, which ended with Philadelphia holding a 76-67 lead.
Iverson had a jumper and 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter before a 3-pointer by Rice and a dunk by Robert Horry pulled Los Angeles within 83-77 with 9:44 to go. Iverson made a pair of free throws and a technical foul shot on O'Neal. Matt Geiger hit a jumper and two free throws off O'Neal's fifth foul as the Sixers rebuilt the lead to 90-77 with 6:33 left.
The Philadelphia 76ers watched their second-half
lead shrink from 19 points to one, and they endured five changes of
possession in the final 20 seconds.
Somehow they hung on, surviving their second frantic finish in
as many nights to beat the Miami Heat 93-90 Friday.
"We had them on the ropes, but we couldn't knock them out,"
said Allen Iverson, who scored 35 points.
Miami missed three 3-pointers down the stretch that would have
tied the score, including an uncontested 24-footer by Lamar Odom
with two seconds to go.
"We played with guts, heart and determination," Odom said.
"But you can't get down 19 points against Philadelphia."
Iverson, who scored the game's final points on a basket with 21
seconds left, had a strange shooting night. He went 5-for-9 from
3-point range, 2-for-14 on two-point shots and 16-for-17 at the
free-throw line.
"I couldn't hit anything inside the arc," Iverson said. "But
fortunately I was able to get to the line and have a big night."
The NBA scoring leader is averaging 38.8 points in his past four
games.
The 76ers, who defeated Chicago 83-82 on Thursday, lead the
Atlantic Division at 11-10 even though they've been hampered by
injuries. Philadelphia snapped a three-game road losing streak and
beat the Heat for the sixth time in a row.
"The fact that we're above .500 and leading our division says a
lot," guard Eric Snow said. "We've been through a lot, been
through the tough times, and we've survived."
They barely withstood a comeback by the Heat, who fell behind
73-54 with three minutes left in the third period before rallying.
Eddie Jones missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with
2:50 left, and another with 43 seconds to go. Miami's Brian Grant
rebounded the second miss and scored to cut the 76ers' lead to
91-90.
Iverson's 18-footer made it 93-90. Then came a furious sequence.
Odom missed a running scoop shot, and Snow missed a breakaway
layup. Grant grabbed the rebound and threw the ball out of bounds
with five seconds left, but a bad pass by Philadelphia's Aaron
McKie gave the ball back to Miami.
Odom then missed from the top of the arc, and the 76ers' John
Salmons rebounded with one second left to clinch the victory.
"You can't let the comeback obscure the things we did wrong the
first 30 minutes," Miami coach Stan Van Gundy said. "The first
half was obviously the worst we've played all year."
Dwyane Wade scored 21 points for Miami. Jones, who missed his
first 10 shots and finished 7-for-22, scored 20. Odom went 5-for-17
and scored 19.
Philadelphia's Derrick Coleman, who has missed nine games with a
strained knee, played the entire fourth quarter and finished with
12 points and seven rebounds.
"I could have surgery," Coleman said. "But that would put me
out for a year, and I'm already 36 years old. I don't want to do
that. The pain is not that bad, although the back-to-back games are
tough."
The 76ers have won 13 of their past 15 games against Miami,
including two victories this season. They've won five straight at
Miami.
The Heat had won four home games in a row.
Game notes
Miami's Caron Butler, who has struggled in limited duty
since undergoing knee surgery Oct. 4, didn't dress. Butler might be
ready to return to the starting lineup next week, Van Gundy said.
... Iverson's 35 points were the most against the Heat this season.
... The 76ers improved to 6-0 when leading at halftime. ... Iverson
had a steal in the fourth quarter to extend his streak to 44
consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA. ... Miami
center Loren Woods made his first start since Nov. 16, 2002,
replacing Udonis Haslem. Woods missed his first six free-throw
attempts. ... The Heat fell to 1-11 when their opponent shoots more
free throws.
Whether it be regular season, playoffs or the All-Star Game, you can take Tim Duncan to the bank.
Duncan's patented bank shot with 26 seconds left provided the final lead change of a seesaw fourth quarter and helped the Western Conference to a 136-132 victory over the Eastern Conference at the Staples Center.
With flashy performances from hometown heroes Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, the West won for the third straight time. But with the game in the balance, West coach Flip Saunders went to Duncan, the superstar forward of the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.
Working against New Orleans Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, Duncan buried a turnaround bank shot to give the West a 133-132 edge, the sixth lead change of the final period.
"It was a play that Flip drew up a couple of options to it," Duncan said. "I was kind of the third one."
"Timmy is one of those guys, he makes big plays," Saunders said.
The East had two more chances, but Orlando's Tracy McGrady threw away a lob pass and - after Seattle's Ray Allen made two free throws - Milwaukee's Michael Redd missed a potential tying 3-pointer.
Duncan, who shared All-Star MVP honors with O'Neal in 2000, sank a free throw to seal it. He had a highly characteristic 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a balanced attack that was tilted in the West's favor by Lakers teammates O'Neal and Bryant.
"My game doesn't change from a regular game to an All-Star Game," Duncan said. "I wish I could be involved in the high-flying stuff, but that's just not what I do."
O'Neal had 24 points, 11 rebounds, a handful of thunderous dunks and several comedic moments as he captured his second All-Star MVP award.
"I'm not one really known known to be taking over an All-Star Game," O'Neal said. "I said to myself if it's going good, nobody is really shining, I'm going to go ahead and go for it."
Bryant, who arrived late to the arena, had 20 points and five steals. He heard some boos from the crowd when he opted for a layup rather than a dunk on a breakaway in the third quarter.
"I just didn't have the momentum so I just laid it in," he said.
For the third time in four years, the midseason showcase came down to the closing moments. A free throw by Duncan tied it at 127-127 with 2:40 to go, but McGrady, who scored 13 points, sank a long jumper. O'Neal tied it again as he hurtled down the lane for a powerful dunk at the 1:57 mark as New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd ran for cover.
"I just went in and took it and took 2.9 steps and threw it down," O'Neal said.
"You've got to think about your family," Kidd said. "I don't know if he has an anti-lock brake system but I was just going to get out of the way."
McGrady made a nifty lefthanded drive and Bryant drilled a long jumper before McGrady gave the East its last lead at 132-131 by splitting a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left.
"It was a nail-biter at the end," Bryant said. "It was a good show."
The West had seven players in double figures, as did the East. Allen and Houston center Yao Ming scored 16 points each for the West, while Magloire and New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin- each playing in his first All-Star Game - came off the bench to score 19 and 17 points, respectively.
O'Neal was highly entertaining. He took a couple of spins at point guard in the first half, having his drive swatted out of bounds by Magloire. He later responded by pounding a shot by Magloire into the seats.
"I had a lot of fun," O'Neal said. "A couple of people told me if I get it, there's an opening, they want me to go coast to coast."
In the third quarter, O'Neal scored 10 points on the court and countless points off it. One of his dunks rocked the backboard stanchion so severely it prompted referee Steve Javie to ask if there was an extra one in the building. Seconds later, he scored on a post move, grabbed a fan's video camera and turned it on himself, wiping his brow for effect.
NBA scoring leader Allen Iverson of Philadelphia, who came in with the highest average in All-Star Game history, became a passer, handing out 11 assists with just three points. He had a pair of long lobs that Toronto's Vince Carter turned into jaw-dropping dunks in the first quarter, which ended with the East holding a 33-31 lead.
