Early this morning, a US Navy destroyer collided with a merchant vessel east of Singapore, in our waters. 5 sailors from the USS John S McCain were injured and 10 are unaccounted for.

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore - MPA is leading the search and rescue. The SAF and Police Coast Guard have deployed aircraft, vessels, and personnel to render assistance.

4 of the injured sailors have been transferred to SGH. I hope their colleagues will be found. My thoughts are with their families. – LHL

U.S. Navy destroyer, USS John S McCain, collided with a commercial ship in Singapore territorial waters this morning. The SAF has been mobilised as part of a multi-agency search and rescue effort, led by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore - MPA, and responded to USN’s request for Republic of Singapore Navy’s assistance at 0532hrs with RSS Gallant onsite.

From the SAF, two Patrol Vessels, RSS Gallant and RSS Resilience; one Frigate, RSS Intrepid; two Super Pumas and one Chinook helicopter are assisting in the efforts. RSN’s RSS Resilience is currently escorting USS John S McCain back to Changi Naval Base. Earlier this morning, The Republic of Singapore Air Force Super Puma transported the injured from the ship to Singapore General Hospital.

【你所不知道的西班牙 ～ 美軍基地】
這幾天，新聞一直講到歐巴馬訪西班牙的消息，本來，他預計在西班牙兩天，但是，因為達拉斯殺警案，本來預計要參觀的塞維亞行程就取消了。

當歐巴馬跟西班牙國王會談時他說：我第一次到馬德里不是搭乘 Air Force One，而是背個背包自助，那時還年輕，到哪裡都用走的，吃的是最便宜的東西 .....

嗯！想不到歐巴馬也曾到西班牙自助過！

這次歐巴馬到西班牙僅一天，除了到總理府和馬德里皇宮之外，還到 Rota 的美軍基地。

為什麼在西班牙有美軍基地？

話說西班牙內戰之後，就由佛朗哥當政，因為他跟希特勒的曖昧關係，所以，西班牙在二戰之後就被西方國家孤立，沒人要理這個獨裁又跟希特勒不清不楚的國家。直到 1953 年，西班牙跟美國簽署馬德里協議（Pactos de Madrid de 1953），讓美軍在西班牙設三個空軍基地和一個海軍基地，以換取軍事（二手軍備）和經濟（貸款）援助，西班牙才開始跟西方國家打交道。

這就是為什麼西班牙有美軍基地的原因。

馬德里協議（Pactos de Madrid de 1953）的海軍基地就是這次歐巴馬去的 Rota 海軍基地（Base Naval de Rota），而三個空軍基地則是 Morón 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Morón）、Zaragoza 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Zaragoza）以及 Torrejón de Ardoz 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Torrejón de Ardoz），最後這個空軍基地就是這次歐巴馬的飛機 Air Force One 降落的機場。

後來，美國空軍於 1992 年撤出 Torrejón de Ardoz 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Torrejón de Ardoz），又於 1994 年撤出 Zaragoza 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Zaragoza），所以，目前美國在西班牙只有兩個基地，一個是 Morón 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Morón），另一個是 Rota 海軍基地（Base Naval de Rota），不過，這可不代表美軍撤出西班牙，事實上，去年西班牙國會通過的 Morón 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Morón）擴建案，美國可以派更多軍人到西班牙，Morón 空軍基地（Base Aérea de Morón）也將成為五角大廈對非洲的指揮中心。

有人懷疑，97前香港有否國防？答案很簡單 － 當然有。

雖然香港軍事力量有限，但加上與歐美、英聯邦的聯繫亦能令敵人有一定顧忌，否則當年中國便能無所顧忌入侵香港。

想多點瞭解香港軍事，特別是華籍英軍在保衛香港的角色與歷史，本人推薦這本《老兵不死 － 香港華籍英兵（1857-1997)》。

97前香港有否國防？當然有。

有人說，香港無軍人，無人願意當兵，這個講法當然是錯。

97年前，香港除了有皇家香港軍團（兼職軍人）外，正規英軍中亦有本土香港人部隊（華籍英軍）。

《老兵不死 － 香港華籍英兵（1857-1997）》一書，不同於傳統由上而下的大史觀去編寫，而是從軍人的角度去講述香港軍人百多年的歷史。資料及相片不少是由退伍老軍人提供，內容包括：香港軍人與英籍軍人的情誼，戰前香港人為保衛香港而踴躍參軍的情況，二次大戰時由香港軍人組成，遠赴印度，再到緬甸作戰的「殲敵」特種部隊－香港志願連，以及本地軍人戰後的行動等內容，資料彌足珍貴。

對於有興趣瞭解97前香港軍事與本地軍人歷史的朋友，此書值得一看。
