[時事英文] 到底是 「 All Lives Matter」還是 「 Black Lives Matter」?
All lives can only matter when black lives matter.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
《CNBC》報導:
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Friday expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement by posting an email exchange with an upset customer.
1. express support
2. the Black Lives Matter movement 「
3. an email exchange 通信
4. an upset customer
★★★★★★★★★★★★
In an Instagram post, Bezos posted a screenshot of an email from a customer who said it was “disturbing” and “offensive” that Amazon posted a message on its website in solidarity with the movement. The customer, whose name was blurred, wrote “ALL LIVES MATTER!”
5. post a screenshot
6. disturbing and offensive
7. in solidarity with 聲援⋯⋯;與⋯⋯一致
8. All lives matter.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Critics of the Black Lives Matter movement often seek to counter the phrase by saying “all lives matter” or “blue lives matter,” referencing fallen police officers.
9. seek to counter
10. reference (v.) 論及
11. fallen police officers
★★★★★★★★★★★★
“I have to disagree with you,” Bezos replied.″
"'Black Lives Matter' doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter. Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system.”
12. speak to sth 談論…
13. a disproportionate risk
14. the law enforcement and justice system
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Unlike black parents, Bezos said, he will never have to worry that his son “might be choked to death while being detained one day.” He added that he supports the recent protests around police brutality.
“I want you to know I support this movement that we see happening all around us and my stance won’t change,” he added.
15. never have to worry about 永遠無須擔心⋯⋯
16. be choked to death
17. be detained
18. support the recent protest
19. police brutality
20. stance (n.)
1. All lives matter, not only black ones.
Of course all lives matter! We can address racial discrimination towards all races, poverty, injustice, and other social issues at any time, but the focus now is on the Black Lives Matter movement.
When there is intense public scrutiny of social issues, it gives governments the motivation and support they need to address these issues. Moreover, by focusing on Black Lives Matter at the moment, we are able to examine underlying factors such as wealth inequality, indirect discrimination, and other injustices, all of which affect all races! The Black Lives Matter movement calls attention to these underlying issues.
⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹
2. Discrimination and prejudice exist everywhere. Protesting will only make things worse.
Nearly all the rights we possess today are founded on the sacrifices of the generations before us through hundreds if not thousands of years of civil movements and reforms. Voicing injustice and grievances is an effective way to help our society become aware of social issues and take action. A recent example is the discrimination against Asian Americans in the US. If they had not spoken up against discrimination, there would not be sufficient public pressure to condemn those who wrongly pin the blame of the pandemic on them.
⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹
3. George Floyd had a criminal past. Why wasn’t this reported?
Video footage shows that Floyd was not behaving in a violent manner during his arrest, was not armed, and was not suspected of a violent crime. The claim that his criminal past was not reported is false as it was covered by the Guardian, NPR, and other press. Some news outlets might not have published this because past events have no bearing on how George Floyd was detained and treated. Some might also easily conflate these events and not focus on the current movement.
⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹⊹
4. The government has not done anything wrong. Those who support the Black Lives Matter movement are condoning rioting and looting.
A democratic government exists to serve the people, but citizens in democracies must also agree to abide by the rules and obligations by which they are governed. Democracies grant many freedoms to their citizens, including the freedom to dissent and criticize the government.
When a government violates the fundamental human rights of its citizens, it is the civic responsibility of citizens to protest and redress these infringements and violations. Unfortunately, some are so frustrated with the inaction of the government that they will resort to violence to make themselves heard. There are also some who take the opportunity to benefit themselves through rioting and looting. Such actions should be condemned to the full extent of the law.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
It is common to base on our opinion of a complex issue on our own biases and tidbits of information provided by mainstream news outlets. However, for us to resolve any complex issue, we must seek to understand, analyze, and evaluate these issues in depth from multiple perspectives. While current social problems are difficult to solve, they present a chance for us to come together and change the world for the better!

Jeff Bezos Final Shareholder Letter as Amazon CEO
✍️ I. Make it simple & focused
What are the top things your audience is thinking about? Focus on that. Don’t add a lot of other complicated stuff. Simplify and focus.
If you want to be successful in business (in life, actually), you have to create more than you consume. Your goal should be to create value for everyone you interact with. Any business that doesn’t create value for those it touches, even if it appears successful on the surface, isn’t long for this world. It’s on the way out.
可能只有 “isn't long for this world” 有些人會需要查 (就是不會活很久的意思)。
★★★★★★★★★★★★
✍️ II. But… Be Conversational
那一段的最後兩句:“isn’t long for this world” 跟 “It's on the way out” 根本是完全一樣的內容啊!
•She is the corporate group’s top-ranked sales representative
•She’s by far our best sales rep, just insanely good. Like, nobody else comes close.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
✍️ III. Make it about PEOPLE
...more than 7/8ths of the shares, representing $1.4 trillion of wealth creation, are owned by others. Who are they? They’re pension funds, universities, and 401(k)s, and they’re Mary and Larry, who sent me this note out of the blue just as I was sitting down to write this shareholder letter:
There are many ways to improve your life: eating better, sleeping more, worrying less, and saying NO.
需要的同學請按個讚和留言「It’s all about PEOPLE.」。

Allen Iverson kept the ball this time.
A week after passing up a chance at a winning shot against the Utah Jazz, Iverson hit an off-balance runner with 0.2 seconds left to give the Detroit Pistons a 90-88 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night.
The play was for me to run the clock down and try to get to the basket, he said. There wasnt much time for me to create anything else.
Last Friday, Iverson passed the ball to Rodney Stuckey, who missed a 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime, and Utah went on to win.
Having already scored a dozen points in the fourth quarter on Friday, Iverson took things in his own hands.
That was a great play by Allen, Pistons coach Michael Curry said. He hadnt had much going for him in the first three quarters, but then he took over the game.
Detroit have taken eight straight against the Thunder, and havent lost to the franchise at home since the former Seattle SuperSonics won 93-72 on Dec. 12, 2003. The Pistons didnt have an easy time Friday, though, as they struggled to beat Oklahoma City (3-27).
Were a young team that is still learning how to finish games, and they are a great team that knows how to do that, Chris Wilcox said. A.I. had a terrific fourth quarter, and we just didnt have an answer for him.
Thats been the story of the Pistons season. They have wins over the Lakers and Cavaliers, but have lost to the hapless Wizards and Timberwolves.
We keep having lapses, Iverson said. This team only has three wins, so they are going to be hungry, but we have beaten two of the best teams in the league and lost to two of the worst.
It almost happened again Friday, even after Iversons off-balance jumper. Jeff Green nearly tipped in a halfcourt alley-oop, but the ball bounced twice off the rim before falling harmlessly away.
It was a good look, and Jeff is one of our better leapers, Oklahoma city coach Scott Brooks said. It just slipped out of his hands. Its unfortunate, because it would have been a great overtime.
Iverson led the Pistons with 22 points, and Tayshaun Prince added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Durant had 26 points and eight rebounds for the Thunder.
The Pistons looked sluggish for most of the first three quarters. Oklahoma City shot 39 percent through three periods, but trailed only 66-63 heading into the fourth.
Detroit took advantage of two turnovers by the Thunder in the first minute of the final period to expand its lead to 70-63.
The Pistons were up 14 midway through the fourth, but an 11-0 run pulled Oklahoma City to 84-81 with 2 minutes left.
Iverson then threw the ball away, and Durants jumper made it a one-point game with 1:33 left. Rodney Stuckey answered with a driving layup, but Iverson fouled Russell Westbrook, and the rookie split the free throws to make it 86-84.
Stuckey then shot an airball, and the Thunder called timeout with 54 seconds left. Durant beat Prince for the tying layup, but Stuckey found Antonio McDyess for an open layup with 27.2 seconds to go.
Joe Smith made it 88-all with a 20-footer—the eighth straight shot made by Oklahoma City. Iverson ran the clock down to 5 seconds before heading for the basket and throwing in a runner while surrounded by defenders.
The best feeling is when you are having a quiet game, and you arent doing much on the offensive end, and then your coach and teammates still trust you with that last shot, he said. Its easy when youve already scored 30 or 40 points.

Protecting double-digit leads has been especially maddening for the Philadelphia 76ers this season.
This time, they just got mad.
Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand scored 18 points each, Allen Iverson added 16 and the 76ers snapped a four-game home losing streak with a 96-92 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night.
"We were a little angry and I thought it helped us," said Brand, who fouled out. "We played with a purpose in the fourth quarter. I think this win will give us a nice boost of confidence."
Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams added 12 points each and Samuel Dalembert had six points, 14 rebounds and five blocks for the Sixers, who had lost nine of 10 at home.
Dalembert had 12 rebounds in the first quarter, the most in one quarter by a Philadelphia player since the Wachovia Center opened for the 1996-97 season.
"Sam's been playing pretty well pretty much all season," Philadelphia coach Eddie Jordan said. "We're happy about the things he's giving us. It just seems like he's getting more and more aggressive each game."
Dalembert entered the game tied for fourth in the league in blocked shots (2.17) with Atlanta's Josh Smith.
"I'm confident in my teammates, so I just go out there and give everything," Dalembert said.
Emeka Okafor had 20 points and 11 rebounds, David West added 13 points and 13 rebounds and Chris Paul had 13 points and 14 assists for the Hornets, whose season-best six-game winning streak was snapped.
New Orleans lost on the road for the first time in four games since Jan. 1.
"We battled back three times," Hornets coach Jeff Bower said. "It was very difficult to fight back and come up short."
With the score tied at 92, Iguodala started to drive and then passed to Dalembert, who hit a short hook from the baseline with 25.5 seconds left.
"The man stepped up and my initial reaction was to throw it to the open man," said Iguodala, who added eight assists and five rebounds.
Peja Stojakovic misfired on a 3-point attempt and Iguodala converted two free throws for a 96-92 lead with 13.2 seconds left.
"It's my shot," Stojakovic said. "I thought I had a good look, but Iguodala came flying at me."
Brand hit a 15-foot jumper to give the Sixers a 91-88 lead with 2:12 remaining before Paul responded with a clutch 3-pointer to tie it at 91 with 1:14 left.
Iverson connected on one of two free throws for a 92-91 lead with 57 seconds to go.
Okafor made one of two free throws with 42.6 seconds left to tie the game again.
An 11-0 run in the fourth by Philadelphia pushed its lead to 86-76 with 7:43 remaining.
But the Sixers have had trouble holding double-digit leads all season and watched the Hornets come right back with a 9-0 run to close within 86-85 with 3:54 left.
"We kept our poise," Brand said.
The Sixers led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but the Hornets responded with a late 13-1 run to get within 46-43.
Philadelphia led 48-43 at halftime.
Before the game, the Hornets traded center Hilton Armstrong and cash considerations to Sacramento for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2016. Armstrong was the 12th overall selection in the 2006 draft.
Additionally, New Orleans guard Darren Collison was a late scratch with a bruised right knee.
Game notes
Jordan said "It doesn't bother me" that 76ers president Ed Stefanski refused to say the embattled first-year coach would last the remainder of the season. Asked on Friday to review Jordan, Stefanski said, "I'm not happy with anything." Jordan said they spoke over the weekend, but wanted to keep the conversation private. ... Jordan said he's hoping regular treatment will improve Iverson's arthritic left knee. "If we manage it correctly, and he's diligent with his rehab and his workouts, it will get better," he said. ... Paul was charged with a technical foul with 9:35 left in regulation.

Gerald Wallace put a big hurt on Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson.
Wallace had 25 points, 13 rebounds and one very big block in the final minute as the Charlotte Bobcats handed the Denver Nuggets their third straight loss, 105-101 Monday night.
Iverson (31 points) and Anthony (25) bounced back from a poor shooting night against New Jersey on Saturday night, when they were a combined 11-for-33. But they both got banged up against the Bobcats with Iverson spraining his right ankle and Anthony spraining his left wrist.
Anthony said he's sore but fine and will play Wednesday night at Portland.
Iverson sounded a lot less confident in his status.
"The way I feel right now, I don't know if I would miss a game. I just will have to get up and see how I feel tomorrow," Iverson said. "Right now it's just frustrating to be out there at the end hobbling like that."
X-rays on Iverson's puffy ankle were negative.
Iverson and Anthony are 2-3 together, and their pairing since Melo's return from a 15-game suspension for fighting hasn't been the problem for the Nuggets, who failed for the second time in three nights to gain ground on division-leading Utah.
Rather, it's incorporating newcomer Steve Blake into the mix and having players J.R. Smith, Eduardo Najera, Linas Kleiza and Yakhouba Diawara adjust to their new, reduced roles, coach George Karl said.
"When things were going good, everybody was saying it was working right away, but it's going to take some time," said Anthony. "I don't want to make any excuses right now but it is going to take some time. I'm back off of a 30 days' (absence) and I'm still trying to get my rhythm, get my flow. My teammates are trying to get used to me back out there on the court. When I was out, they had different roles out there."
Charlotte capitalized on the disarray to win for just the eighth time in 24 road games.
"It was not a bad loss," Karl insisted. "We played a very good team."
That's a point Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff has been preaching. Ten of his team's 16 wins have come against teams with winning records.
"I say we have a bad record, but we're not a bad basketball team," Bickerstaff said.
With the Bobcats ahead 102-101, Anthony came down with the ball that was bobbled around following a miss by Adam Morrison and he darted for the other end only to get rejected by Wallace.
"I went for steal then but couldn't reach it, so I kept going and blocked him," Wallace said.
Wallace then misfired at the other end, but Raymond Felton got the long rebound, was fouled by Anthony and sank both shots with 16 seconds left for a 104-101 lead.
Smith's off-balance 3-pointer was off-target with 6 seconds left and Jeff McInnis sank one of two free throws to ice it.
Before the game, Bickerstaff was lamenting his lack of a clutch player to close out games. "What we lack is a difference maker. A guy to go to down the stretch. We don't have a Kobe or a Carter to give the ball all the time with the game on the line," he said.
But he had plenty of players step up on this night.
Charlotte trailed 97-94 when Wallace hit a free throw, Morrison (12 points) swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Wallace swooped in for a tip-in to give the Bobcats a 100-97 lead with 2:26 remaining.
Iverson's three-point play tied it at 100 but the Nuggets wouldn't lead again, befuddled by Charlotte's strong defense and opportunistic offense.
Emeka Okafor added 18 points, 10 boards and five blocks and Felton scored 16 for Charlotte, which took an 81-79 lead into the fourth quarter and didn't fade this time.
"We play better against the elite teams in the league," Matt Carroll said. "We play fearless like we have nothing to lose."
Iverson said the key to ending Denver's skid is to step up on defense.
"Defense got us back into the game, that was evident," Iverson said. "It was easy to see that, that was when the crowd got back into the game, that's when we got into the game. That should be a sign to show what we can do when we play defense. When you play good defense, it turns into excellent offense."
