The cover of this week’s issue of The Economist, which calls Taiwan “the most dangerous place on earth,” prompted a great deal of discussion on our national security.
The article highlights the threat that China’s military expansion poses to the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas. I hope the Beijing authorities come to realize that the PLA’s actions in this regard contradict their own proclamations of China’s “peaceful rise” and are only driving greater international concern.
But though Taiwan does face a real threat from China, I want to assure everyone that our government is fully capable of managing all potential risks and protecting our country from danger.
Over the past few years, we have stayed on top of shifts in international supply chains and developed closer economic and security ties with our global partners. We have also actively worked to strengthen our national defense, especially our asymmetric capabilities. Taiwan is fulfilling our responsibility to uphold regional peace and stability. Our position remains consistent—we will neither bow to pressure nor act rashly when we have support. This approach has earned us international recognition as a responsible force for good in the Indo-Pacific region.
Taiwan stands on the front lines of democracy worldwide. As long as the people of Taiwan remain united and uphold our core values while responding prudently to regional developments, we can overcome the challenges posed by authoritarian expansion. I trust that our like-minded partners, having seen the risks involved, will rise to this challenge and work together to maintain peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

We continue to learn more about the Chinese Communist regime’s lies and culpability in the global coronavirus pandemic. But if you want to see the difference between how a totalitarian and a free Chinese society handles a public health emergency, just contrast the actions of the People’s Republic with those of the Republic of China, Taiwan. One is responsible for unleashing a contagion that has infected more than 2 million people; the other has all but defeated the virus.
What is most impressive is that Taiwan has done all this without ordering its population to shelter in place or shutting down schools, restaurants, stores and other businesses. As a result, Taiwan’s economy is not experiencing the same economic damage as countries under lockdown.
So how did Taiwan succeed where Beijing failed?
First, Taiwan acted fast.
Second, the government acted with complete transparency.
The government set up a coronavirus hotline and proactively sought out those with respiratory symptoms. Taiwanese officials also set price limits to prevent the hoarding of masks, and mobilized Taiwan’s military to help increase mask production from 2 million to 15 million a day.
But those efforts to isolate Taiwan may have hurt us. On Dec. 31, Taiwan tried to warn the World Health Organization (WHO) about the danger the virus posed... Had Taiwan been a member, we would have learned several critical weeks sooner about the coming danger.

[#Save12: Our urgent cry from HK: Immediate Return of the 12 HK Detainees from Mainland China]
Hello, I am Joshua Wong. I hope you can spend around two minutes listen to our urgent cry from Hong Kong which related to the conspiracy of authorities to kidnap 12 Hong Kong activists to China for secret trial and detention.
Twelve Hong Kong activists, all involved in the movement last year, were seized by China’s coastal guard when fleeing to Taiwan for refuge in late-August. All of them are now detained secretly in China, with the youngest aged only 16. One of them is a Portuguese national, two are holding British Overseas National Passport. For more than 50 days, the Chinese authorities deprived them of the right to choose legal representatives. The health condition of the dozen activists are worrying since some of their medical needs are denied, and the risk of facing torture during detention is high.
The Hong Kong government is reluctant to save the activists, claiming they don’t have a role on this matter. But last week, flying record of a government aircraft revealed by whistleblower that the Government launched an aerial surveillence opearation while the activists was on board, with clear indication of ‘Police Operation’. Not only did the authorities witness interception of the 12 youths, they were involved in the conspiracy to kidnap activists to China for secret trial and detention.
The appalling development is followed by more brutal crackdown on activists in Hong Kong. In revenge, the police arrested nine more people for ‘assisting fugitives’. We are shocked to learn that Hong Kong Government has evidently colluded with Chinese authorities to put activists in greater danger, on matters clearly within its jurisdiction.
Perhaps we have too little imagined the determination of Beijing to crush the promise of ‘One Country, Two Systems’. I sincerely hope that the world will keep a close watch to Hong Kong protest.
Please join our global petition (https://bit.ly/save12youthspetitions) and photo campaign with hashtag #Save12 to urge the immediate return of the 12 HK detainees from Mainland China. We wish more people can pass our devotion on and do as much as you can to stand with people of Hong Kong. Thank you.

An honest look at how safe it is to live in China...
Murder happens, but is underreported.
In 2011, the reported murder rate in China was 1.0 per 100,000 people, with 13,410 murders. The murder rate in 2010 was 1.1.
Corruption
Further information: Corruption in China
The PRC is a one-party state ruled by the Communist Party of China,[9] Corruption exists in China, just like in any other country. The cost thereof to the economy is significant. Between 1978 and 2003, an estimated $50 billion was smuggled out of the country by corrupt officials.
Coercion
Violent crime exits in China, though to a lesser degree than in the US.
Human trafficking
Further information: Human trafficking in China
There are instances of human trafficking reported in China for various purposes. The majority of trafficking in PRC is internal and this domestic trafficking is the most significant human trafficking problem in the country.
Women are lured through false promises of legitimate employment into commercial sexual exploitation in Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. Chinese men are smuggled to countries throughout the world for exploitative labor.Women and children are trafficked into PRC from Mongolia, Burma, North Korea, Russia, and Vietnam for forced labor and sexual slavery.
Drug trade
Further information: Illegal drug trade in China
PRC is a major transshipment point for heroin produced in the Golden Triangle. Growing domestic drug abuse is a significant problem in PRC. Available estimates place the domestic spending on illegal drugs to be $17 billion.
Domestic violence
Further information: Domestic violence in China
China has a high rate of domestic violence.[15] In 2004, the All-China Women’s Federation compiled survey results to show that thirty percent of the women in China experienced domestic violence within their homes.
The true extent of domestic violence is unclear due to the lack of related law and execution of the law. The Chinese government is in the process of "planning" to pass a "draft of anti-domestic violence law".

Does China pose a serious threat to us here in Taiwan? After several skirmishes and smaller attacks in the past, is it possible that a larger, more serious military invasion will happen in the future? The reunification of Taiwan is a sensitive topic that is seldom discussed in public, so no music or silly editing in this video, just some of the facts along with my opinion of course.
