Sharing a quick homemade video we made tonight for a sweet birthday boy to illustrate a couple of things that I usually teach in my Toddler Wars workshops.
Alumnis, see if you can recognize them!
1. Prepping her the first video by singing through happy birthday w her. Staying calm and engaging but not pressuring or forcing. (Remember, calm confident leader!)
2. I only sent the second video where she was enthusiastic and singing w no prompting! Proof that you should never compare your real life with someone else's "highlight" reel!
3. Timing : I did it after dinner, while playing and hours before bedtime which translates into happy toddler!
4. When she discovers my big surprised reaction to her kiss, she "chases" it and tries to milk it. I gently step in while remaining calm and enthusiastic. I acknowledge her kisses and let her have a moment. When she doesn't stop on her own, I physically help her (hold her so she can't kiss the screen anymore 😅) by asking her to say bye with me. She turns off the video at the end still giving her control but I'm still in charge of the big picture. Remember, let them have little wins while you steer the ship!
In the end, my goal was met without tears, bribing, punishing, forcing, or begging. Just fun encouraging leading.
