Term 3 of the school year started today. For many students, it was the first time back in school after almost two months — students did Home Based Learning when the circuit breaker began in April, and had their mid-year school holidays in May. I’m sure many of you were excited to see friends and teachers again!

HBL had become the ‘new normal’ during the circuit breaker. Today as we start Phase 1 of our safe opening, there will be yet another ‘new normal’. Students and teachers returned to a different environment than when they were last in school.

Parents will understandably be anxious for their children. Rest assured that the Ministry of Education, Singapore has taken comprehensive measures to keep students, teachers, and staff safe. We will take time to get used to the precautions, but they are necessary to protect everyone. Meanwhile, we are watching the situation closely, and will do everything necessary to gradually resume our normal activities while keeping teachers and students safe. – LHL

I launched a Hari Raya cookbook during the Ang Mo Kio virtual Hari Raya celebration last Friday. It includes 21 recipes contributed by AMK residents (go.gov.sg/9f0s69).

The graphics in the book were designed by three Institute of Technical Education, Singapore visual communication students. With a mix of remote learning and physical time in school, they learnt how to use the software and created the graphics in just three days!

Home-based learning has become a necessary part of school during COVID-19. With the cooperation of students, teachers and parents, this can be productive and fruitful.

It’s been an unusual year for our kids. COVID-19 has disrupted school and upended familiar routines.

Parents know how resilient children can be, but it still makes us proud to see how bravely and responsibly our young ones have adapted – wearing masks in classrooms, getting used to home-based learning, forgoing birthday parties with friends, and celebrating the usual festivals and events, like Children’s Day, a little differently.

This year’s edition of the annual photo contest by Ministry of Education, Singapore, “Our Schools, Our Stories”, captures images of school life before and after COVID-19. A roving exhibition of the winning photos is going to 7 locations around the island until 1 March 2021. Do catch it if you can!

The pandemic has turned out to be the biggest and most important lesson this year for our children. I think everyone deserves an A+ for your response!

Eid Mubarak! I decided to sit down, put some makeup on and share with you guys my experience of celebrating Eid this year during Singapore's Circuit Breaker*.

Because we are still in our Circuit Breaker period during Eid, a lot of things were done differently. We were told to recite the takbir, do Eid prayers and listen to the Eid sermon at home. We are also not allowed to visit friends and family, which is something very common to do in Singapore during Eid.

It's a long video, but watch on to find out my thoughts on this whole experience . I hope you all had a meaningful Ramadhan and Eid with your families even though things are different this time round.

*The Circuit Breaker protocol is Singapore's version of a 'lockdown' whereby everyone is told to stay strictly at home unless they
are part of essential services or to get daily essentials (going to the supermarket). Everyone is encouraged to work from home or telecommute, and students were made to do Home Based Learning over this period. All retail outlets are closed during this period, and food establishments open only for delivery pick up and takeaway.
