Joy in God’s Timing versus Sorrow in Man’s Timing
“God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her.” Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?” Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” God said, “No, but Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year.”” (Genesis 17:15-21 WEB)
Both Abraham and Sarah laughed when they heard about God’s promise of a child that would come from their own body.
Isaac means “laugh”.
They laughed at how ridiculous the idea sounded in the natural, and yet God wanted them to laugh with joy from having a child of their own—a fulfillment of their greatest desire.
If 100 year old Abraham and 90 year old Sarah could have a son, then there’s no such things as ‘too late’ for you.
Our God is the one who even raises the dead back to life.
The everlasting covenant is made with the son of the promise and not the son of the flesh.
Sarah is a picture of Grace, while Hagar is a picture of the Law.
God wants our fruits to come as a result of receiving His Grace, not by the works of the Law.
Ishmael was a product of the flesh—to put it bluntly, he was the result of Abraham and Sarah’s bad decision.
His existence would be a stumbling block for the descendants of Isaac.
However, because Abraham cried out for Ishmael to be blessed, God graciously blessed Ishmael and his descendants too, but without an eternal covenant.
There was a “set time” for Isaac’s birth. If Abraham and Sarah had just prayed and waited for Yahweh’s clear instruction about the promised child, all the unnecessary drama about Hagar and Ishmael wouldn’t have happened.
We must trust in God’s appointed time and resist the urge to act by the flesh. The works of the flesh is about man’s timing, but faith in God is trusting in His perfect timing.
“When he finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money; every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the same day, as God had said to him. Abraham was ninety-nine years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. In the same day both Abraham and Ishmael, his son, were circumcised. All the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.” (Genesis 17:22-27 WEB)
Abraham was prompt in obeying Yahweh God’s instruction. He circumcised every male in his household “in the same day”.
When God gives us clear instructions, there’s no time to procrastinate.
When He shares something unclear to you, wait until He reveals more in a clearer way. This will prevent Ishmael kind of fleshly mistakes.

The Birth of a Serpent Slayer
“She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.” (Luke 2:7-8 WEB)
This was the backdrop of Jesus’ birth. The King of glory, God’s precious gift to us, was born on a dark, silent night, and there was no room for Him.
He did not come with great fanfare or a welcoming procession like the kings of the world would have received.
Instead, He came humbly like one of no repute.
But Heaven was not willing to let the Son of God be treated like a nobody.
“Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.”” (Luke 2:9-14 WEB)
An angel and the heavenly hosts appeared to shepherds, shining with awesome glory, to announce the good news of the King who was born.
At that point in time, Israel was under Roman rule, and had been ruled by the Gentile kingdoms for many years. The devil had subjugated God’s chosen nation and pressed them hard under his thumb.
However, God’s answer was not loud or dramatic. He sent a baby to be born.
Just as He delivered the children of Israel from Pharaoh using a baby (Moses), He would deliver Israel once more from Satan using another baby (Jesus).
This time, the baby would not be a Lawgiver, but a Law-fulfiller. Jesus fulfilled the demands of the Law through His suffering and death at the cross, and established the New Covenant of Grace for us.
“I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”” (Genesis 3:15 WEB)
No matter what its true origins are, today we celebrate Christmas because God made a promise in the Garden of Eden thousands of years ago, that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. He kept that promise, becoming the prophesied serpent slayer Himself. Christmas is about a promise kept!
Notice that in the prophecy, the one whose head is bruised is the serpent (Satan), but there is another person who is the “offspring” of the serpent. In the original Hebrew, the word “zaraka” is a noun in the singular, masculine tense, meaning one male child.
This wicked male child was destined to have hostility against the offspring (also singular and masculine tense) of the woman, who is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Who is the offspring of the serpent? If you are curious to find out his name as revealed in the Bible, and also the details about his eventual destruction and Jesus’ victory, you can read all the exciting details in “Sandcastles Don’t Last Forever”: https://www.ko-fi.com/s/7b9e3783ae

Israel Wasn’t Expecting a Messiah like Jesus
“Part your heavens, Yahweh, and come down. Touch the mountains, and they will smoke. Throw out lightning, and scatter them. Send out your arrows, and rout them. Stretch out your hand from above, rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, out of the hands of foreigners;” (Psalms 144:5-7 WEB)
David painted such a grand depiction of Yahweh coming down to rescue him.
This is the image Israel had of the Messiah—that when he appeared, he would come in great glory and majesty to save Israel from her enemies immediately.
However, Yahweh did come down, just not in the way that Israel expected.
Yahweh the Son laid aside His divine glory and took on the form of a man, being born as a baby on earth quietly like the bread of heaven (manna) falling gently upon the dew when everyone was still asleep.
His method of rescuing Israel wasn’t dramatic like fire, lightning and arrows. It was to shed His blood and die as the Lamb of God hanging upon a tree.
No wonder Israel has such a hard time believing that Jesus is their Messiah. He did not manifest in the way they were expecting for so many years.
They have such trouble reconciling the descriptions of the Messiah both as a suffering servant in Isaiah 53 and the Messiah as a conquering king in other parts of Old Testament scriptures.
Therefore, they concluded that there must be two different Messiahs. They call one Moshiach Ben Joseph (The Messiah who is Joseph’s son) and Moshiach Ben David (The Messiah who is David’s son).
This is not true of course—there is only one Messiah, who appears in the world at two separate times.
The first time Jesus appeared, He came to deal with the issue of sin by offering Himself as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world.
In His “Second Coming” in the future, also called “the Day of Christ” and “the Day of Yahweh”, Jesus will fit David’s depiction of Yahweh as a mighty warrior. Jesus will return on the clouds to rescue Israel from the Antichrist and his wicked armies, just as Jerusalem is about to be conquered and destroyed.
The conquering King of kings will be dressed in royal robes dipped in blood, riding upon a white horse. The sword proceeding from His mouth will easily slay all His enemies, and their blood will run like rivers in Bozrah.
The battle at Armageddon will usher in a millennium of unprecedented peace and prosperity on earth.
We are so close to the time whereby the prophecies in the Book of Revelation will turn into historical facts.
