When The Brooke Heritage Trust commissioned this piece, Jason Brooke shared that there are no photos of Rentap, and that he was looking for an artists' impression that humanised this hero, rather than the generic Iban headhunter stereotype.
After much research into the likes of Hill Gray as well as tattoo researcher Lars Krutak, I came to know Rentap and the Iban of Skrang (called "Sekaran" in the 1800s) as much as I could. Elements that I've not included in this piece, but I think would be an accurate depiction of Rentap, are a scorpion-like tattoo on his chest, and fingers inked with many lines. Tattoos like these were given to men who hunted many heads, and also to protect them from certain spirits.
Rentap was also likely to have worn a sleeveless handwoven "pua kumbu" jacket with fringes on the edges.
There is so much that our history book doesn't tell us about this man and the place he was from.

Portrait of Libau anak Ningkan, better known as Rentap, warrior chief of the upper Skrang River in 1850s. Commissioned by the Brooke Trust from local artist Alena Murang @alenamurang_art for display in the Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita. Historically portrayed only as a warring opponent of the Raj, with this portrait we wanted to show Rentap's humanity - community leader as well as warrior. Our research into his life and cultural background was greatly enhanced by that of Alena as she sought to create as authentic a portrait as possible. Rajah Charles in his journals wrote of his deep respect for this great adversary and his differing world view. Moving beyond those differences, Rentap’s granddaughter Subang later married Charles Brooke’s friend and supporter, Penghulu Dalam Munan, and carried on the line. So, reminding us of the humanity of all, the value of respecting those with differing views, and the importance of moving beyond those differences, this fine portrait will go on display in the Brooke Gallery this year.
