I’ve always wanted to learn a Native American language, but it’s been extremely difficult to find anyone with whom I could learn as most indigenous American languages are considered critically endangered or extinct. So a couple months ago I was extremely excited to get in touch with someone who could teach me Navajo, the original language of the Navajo people who live mostly in the Navajo Nation located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Less than 200,000 people speak Navajo in the entire world. Navajo is hands down the hardest language I’ve ever studied, with extremely challenging pronunciation and one of the most complex grammatical systems of any extant language. It’s so complex that the language was used by the Navajo code talkers as the basis for a secret communication system during World War II.
But even though many young people no longer speak the language, the older generation often still does, and so after a month of studying the language and me and my crew’s COVID vaccinations we flew out to New Mexico to find locals to practice with. My new EP “DETOUR” drops in 2 days (January 14th)!!! SUPERRRR EXCITED!!! 📀📀📀 After all the hard work put in this passed year, by not only myself, but also the wonderful musicians I’ve gotten to work with, and of course my @mediaasiamusic family, it was definitely all worth it! I put in everything I had to making this EP. I tried to sing my heart out on every single track, and of course each track was met with different obstacles ranging from trying to dig deep within my emotions, to working on my chinese pronunciation, and of course challenging my vocal range. With songs like “FULL MOON PARTY” and “愛斯基摩人之吻”, these are probably the toughest songs I’ve ever recorded. THAT FALSETTO and mixed voicing is a real piece of work btw. Anyway, wanna say I’m proud of these songs and the effort that was put in, hope you guys see it too! So far, I’ve released 5 tracks on the EP, and there’s still one more song left. Now tell me which ones your favorite? Comment below! 🤟🏼 #DETOURJF #2020 #EPLaunch #馮允謙 #jayfungmusic #famparkhk #聲音導航 #山旮旯 #fullmoonparty #尋找白金漢 #尋找白金漢之youremybuckingham #愛斯基摩人之吻

A question I get asked often - what steps to take when just starting with a language?
———
1. Start with the alphabet if the language has a new writing system. It’s extremely important to get the pronunciation right from the beginning so you don’t have to rely on often inaccurate English renditions of how to pronounce words. Once you have the writing system down, write as much as you can in the language without relying on English or another language to help too much.
2. After the alphabet, learn basic greetings and vocabulary. This is an important step and helps motivate you to keep going. I listen to the radio or to music from that language a lot, and if I learn the 100 most used words in the language, I’ll most likely hear that word in a song and get super excited about it.
3. Grammar. Learn a grammar structure, look at example sentences (either on apps like Duolingo, or textbooks, or sites that give example sentences like conjugator) and then replace words in the sentences with other words you know.
4. Practice. Getting a language partner is important. You should find someone who is open to correcting your mistakes, and someone who is patient to talk to you despite you being a beginner. I also practice by doing everything I normally do, in another language. My diary/schedule/shopping list/music playlist all transforms into my target language for a period of time.
5. Keep track of your progress. A diary, studygram or Youtube channel is a good way to see how you’ve progressed.

Szia! I have exciting news - I have decided to start learning Hungarian! A language that, 5 days ago, I didn't know anything about. So much so that I thought Magyar was pronounced "MAY-GAR" (didn't even try to read it correctly in my life - shame on me!).
Anyway, I am super excited to share with you guys how I'm going about learning this difficult language. It's one of the first languages that I have a set start date for (20 Nov 2017) - which means I've been learning it for 5 days today... and I'd like to track my progress as closely as possible.
If you're learning Hungarian, here's a master post I made of Hungarian resources! https://lindiebotes.com/hungarian-resources/
