《二噁英的禍害》
上星期香港警察承認了使用催淚彈時會產生二噁英。化學博士K.Kwong先前亦解釋了二噁英是油溶性且極具致癌性的化學物，人體吸收後非常難自然排出，而且半衰期長達十數二十年，持續吸收恐會對身體造成嚴重後果。
【何謂二噁英】
在了解二噁英的禍害前，我們先要了解何謂二噁英。二噁英是一個包含一系列相關化學物的統稱，就如我們常用酒精去形容一系列的化學物，例如乙醇(ethanol)和甲醇(methanol)。
對普羅大眾來說，我們最需要知道的是二噁英當中最毒最具致癌性的2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (簡稱TCDD)。TCDD是世衛評為一級致癌物的化學物，是當年越戰使用的橙劑(agent orange)裡的活性成分。
由於TCDD的毒性和致癌性，對後代和環境的影響，實在太深遠，現已成為國際間禁用的化學武器。
*** 值得注意的是K Kwong亦指出香港警察所用的催淚彈除二噁英外亦可產用具毒性和致癌性的PCT（類近PCB，一種類二噁英的致癌物）

【二噁英的禍害】
相信大家最近見不少因當年橙劑，而受害的越戰後代和畸胎的照片。你可以會覺得，那會不會太誇張？
不會！催淚彈的禍害絕對比你能想像的要深遠，根據動物和人類追蹤性研究，大量吸收二噁英（如TCDD)或類二噁英（如PCB/PCT)可造成包括但不限於以下的後遺症
1. 畸胎(Teratogenic) [1]
如果媽媽在懷孕前或中暴露於大量二噁英的話，可導致新生兒出現結構性缺陷，例如腎水腫(hydronephrosis)、齶裂(Cleft Palate) 、胸腺發育不良(thymic hypoplasia )等等。
2. 小孩發育不良或內分泌及荷爾蒙失調[2]
如果嬰孩在成長期暴露於大量二噁英的話，可引致精子數量及活躍性低下、雌激素(estradiol)過少和甲狀腺激素過多（Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)。 過多的甲狀腺激素可令成長中的小孩患上性早熟（precocious puberty)，可嚴重影響小孩身高、體重和性器官的發育。
此外，更可導致神經系統發育不良或異常，例如聽力、精神行為、動作和認知的發展(altered psychomotor function, behaviors and cognition) [6]
2. 令母乳含有PCB（類二噁英的致癌物）[3]
3. 氯痤瘡(Chloracne)
4. 增加患癌機會 [4][5]
多項實驗室的研究發現，如持續接觸低劑量的二噁英，可增加患上肝癌、肺癌、直腸癌、淋巴癌、不同種類的鱗狀細胞癌的機會。
5. 系統性後遺症 [6]
二噁英對處於成長階段的小孩的影響尤其嚴重，可引致皮膚、牙齒和指甲異常。系統性方面更可引致，免疫系統、成長因子和新陳代謝的異常。需要注重的是，當免疫系統過低時便會增加各種癌症的出現。
此外，對所有年齡層的，都會增加心血管疾病、糖尿病及與生殖器官有關疾病的風險。

醫學界和科學界相信，二噁英的禍害，遠比我們想像中的深遠。當年人類就是因為不了解二噁英，同時為了發展而無視對環境的影響，而令到二噁英嚴重污染了土地和水源。這大量的二噁英令歐美不少的市民，因而患上二噁英的後遺症，直至現在還未完全消除。
然後直至昨日，香港警察一共射了超過一萬粒催淚彈，就連環保署也不再公怖環境二噁英含量時，那一萬粒催淚彈到底產生了幾多二噁英、污染了香港幾多的土地和水源？當你以為只要不上街，催淚彈便與你無關時，其實有朝一日我們和我們的一下代，大家都在喝二噁英的水、吃二噁英的肉、在怖滿二噁英的公園玩遊戲。
今日文科生只跟大家分析，最常見的二噁英禍害，二噁英對健康造成的影響，絕對比以上提及的多。我們絕不能對催淚彈和二噁英習以為常，當我們意識到二噁英的污染時，就已經太遲。
到底我們的下一代會不會變成畸胎、發育不良再生癌症，大概只有歷史可以告訴我們。
