-
Feeling thankful every morning when I wake up in this space, sunlight shining in the living room, birds singing on the trees outside my windows.
-
A blessing to have a roof where I feel Home.
Now that each of us in Taiwan has to spend more time at home, I wish those who are interested can rethink their space, make it more clean, tidy, comfortable, you don’t have to make it minimalist as I like mine, but get rid of stuff you don’t need and make your space crowded.
-
A home isn’t only a place where you store stuff and sleep, look at it as a mirror of yourself, a place where you can feel calm, comfortable to invite people over, a place where you create memories and give you every day the inspiration to keep thriving.

Why I Chose Taiwan #3
💟"When I started studying Chinese as an undergrad, we had a whole book on Taiwan Today. The first time I actually came to Taiwan was studying Chinese with the State Department. Everybody loves coming here for language, but I wanted to see and do more. That’s what brought me back this time around, as the Deputy Director of the Economic Section. We focus on building up the U.S.-Taiwan economic relationship, which spans across so many different areas that I think are changing the future shape of the world. We are focused on health, cyber issues, digital economy, how do we ensure that technologies are secure, how do we build secure supply chains throughout the Indo-Pacific, and more. Taiwan has such talented people, and so that really inspires me. Taiwan’s people are its greatest asset. For the economy, you really need talented, creative people, and they are here in Taiwan. I have a very eclectic background in investment banking, international development, finance, and so how do I tap into the way I’ve seen financial industries develop to help Taiwan and the U.S. now get venture capital funding for future startups that are really going to change the way that our kids interact with the digital world? Aside from my professional interest in Taiwan, I love nature, I think it’s really important that humans have a connection with nature, and Taiwan provides that. I’ve always wanted to be a bird-watcher but I’m not good at waking up early in the morning to go out looking for birds. But here I don’t need to, because there are always all different kinds of beautiful birds that come to my own back yard in Yangmingshan!"

About Coastland
Dedicating an album to the graceful landscapes in Taiwan has always been a dream for Jesy Chiang, the composer and leading member of Cicada. She visited one after another coastal wetlands in western Taiwan and immersed herself in the poetic view and atmosphere which became the inspiration of the new release Coastland. The opening track "Flying Sands" starts with a coarse and grainy bass line with violas and violins joining later. The upbeat "Flapping Wings" features the crystal-esque sound of the piano and high soaring sounds of the string instruments mimicking a flock of birds flying across scattered clouds. The continuous and tender melody of the string instruments in "Close to Wetland" embodies the softness of Cheng Long Wetlands in Yunlin County. In " Withered Reflection", the western coastal view in Taiwan is musically depicted with a gentle touch, while the next song, " Blooms in Dark", is overwhelmed with despair and sadness. The music carrying such complex emotions builds up and paints the silhouette of Mailiao, Yunlin County. It allows listeners to catch a glimpse of hope as the song proceeds. Despite the melancholy composition in D minor, the last number "into the Ocean" sends encouraging energy by its strong and flowing rhythm. The bonus track "Over the Sea/Under the Water" was the first song of Cicada released in the first EP three years ago. It was inspired by environmental issues in Taiwan and became the starting point of Coastland. After the new violist joined the band, this track was re-arranged and re-recorded in the new album to remind their original intention.
The concept behind the music and the performance in Coastland are exquisite, profound, and grand ── fans of classical music, chamber music and independent music will all relate. A truly extraordinary conceptual album that will be on repeat by those of who devote their love to Taiwan.

Cicada's "Coastland"
Jesy Chiang has always dreamt of dedicating an album to Taiwan's graceful landscapes, composer and leading member of Cicada. To this end, she visited many coastal wetland areas in western Taiwan, immersing herself in its poetic landscape. These visits became the inspiration behind the group's new release "Coastland". The opening track "Flying Sands" begins with a coarse and grainy bass line, later joined by violas and violins. The upbeat "Flapping Wings" features the crystalline notes of a piano and the high soaring sounds of string instruments mimicking a flock of birds flying through scattered clouds. The continuous and tender sound of the string instruments in "Close to the Wetland" brings to life the softness of Cheng Long Wetland Park in Yunlin County. In "Withered Reflection", Taiwan's western coast is musically depicted with a gentle touch, while the next song "Blooms in Dark" is suffused with despair and sadness, creating an image of Mailiao, Yunlin County, allowing listeners to capture a moment of hope as the song proceeds. Despite the melancholy composition in D minor, the last song "Into the Ocean" crescendos with an uplifting energy with its strong, pulsing rhythm. The bonus track "Over the Sea/Under the Water" was the first song of Cicada released three years ago as part of their first EP. Inspired by Taiwanese environmental issues, it was the starting point for "Coastland". After the new violist joined the band, this track was re-arranged and re-recorded for the new album, as a reminder as to where it all started.
The concept behind the music and the performance in "Coastland" are exquisite, profound, and grand──fans of classical music, chamber music and independent music will all relate. A truly extraordinary conceptual album that will be on repeat by those of who devote their love to Taiwan.

White Forest is dedicated to animals including whales, dolphins, coral reefs, sea turtles, as well as cats in the city and birds in the mountains. Along with "Ocean" is the series of Cicada's work themed with marine and land.
“Dolphins Leap” proceeds with different speeds to imitate spinner dolphins and risso's dolphins. “Used to be Home” portrayed the impact of offshore wind energy caused on white dolphin's habitat from their point of views. “Whale Family” is about humpback whales caring and raising babies. “White Forest” starts from the dreamy coral reef spawning into their bleaching due to seawater warming. Cicada's attempts are to describe the relationship between human and its impact on ocean and animals.
