More Prosperous Future For Our Families
by Former Vice President Joseph Biden for World Journal
These are tough times. Our country is at a crossroads, facing a pandemic, a recession, and an election that will decide our futures for a very long time.
This year, we've seen the best of America carry us forward: heroic doctors, nurses, grocers, restaurant owners, essential workers–including so many Asian Americans.
But we've also seen the worst: acts of hate against Asian Americans wrongly blamed for COVID-19, spurred on, in part, by hateful rhetoric from President Trump. They've been screamed at, spit on, and assaulted. Homes, businesses, and cars vandalized with slurs. Small children stabbed. An 89-year-old grandmother set on fire amid this rising culture of hate.
This is not who we are.
For nearly two centuries, Asian Americans have made our country strong–from the gold miners and railroad and factory workers who helped to power our rise; to the scientists, architects, artists, and entrepreneurs who are helping to drive us forward now. For years, their courage, sacrifices, and success have powered the American Dream and helped America stand as a beacon of freedom and hope to the world.
President Trump doesn't get that. He has led an assault on our values as a nation of immigrants, even tearing thousands of children from their parents' arms at our border. Hate crimes against people are at a 16-year-high, even before this pandemic. And now, to deflect blame for his failure to protect our nation from this crisis, he insists on calling COVID-19 the "China virus," no matter how many thousands of reported racist incidents against Asian Americans it encourages.
Words matter – and a president's words matter even more. As President, I'll defend the American Dream for everyone, so every hardworking family has the same fair shot at prosperity and a better future. I'll stand against racism in every form, directing the Justice Department to prioritize hate crimes, and working to heal the wounds of hatred and division, not fan the flames.
Donald Trump knew how deadly COVID-19 was back in January and did nothing to stop it. Now, more than 220,000 Americans are dead. Some 30 million have lost jobs, hours, wages. One in five small businesses have shut down. Trump's failed leadership has tanked our economy – and the longer he's president, the longer it'll take to get it fully up and running again.
We're eight months in, but Trump still has no plan. I do.
It starts with taking responsibility and doing the hard work to control this pandemic and get our lives back. I'll implement the plan I've laid out since March to beat COVID-19. I'll listen to scientists and experts; protect our families; and make testing, treatment, and any eventual vaccine free and available to everyone.
I'll get right to work building our economy back better – getting real relief out to millions of hard-hit small businesses. They're the lifeblood of our communities – but Trump's corrupt recovery passed them by, funneling funds to big corporations instead. Some 75% of Asian-owned small businesses weren't expected to get any first-round stimulus funds at all. It's wrong. I've called for ensuring small businesses with less than 50 employees get new relief funds. And I'll boost their long-term access to credit and capital, and work to ease the language barriers that can hold back immigrant entrepreneurs.
Through it all, my economic recovery plan will reward work, not just wealth, creating millions of good paying jobs of the future. Independent economists at Moody's found that my plan creates 7 million more jobs – and $1 trillion more in economic growth – than President Trump's would. And I won't raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000 a year – period. Instead, I'll make sure the super wealthy and big corporations finally pay their fair share.
I've fought my whole career for working and middle class families – so many of them hard-working immigrants who came to America in search of a better life. I'll help parents afford a quality education for their kids, boosting teacher pay and making public college free for most families. I'll make it easier to care for aging parents, and make health care more affordable. Trump is in court right now trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, stripping tens of millions of people of health coverage in the middle of a deadly pandemic. It makes no sense.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 is proof that the United States can't isolate itself from the world. We have to work with other nations to meet global challenges that impact us all, starting by rebuilding our relationships with our closest partners. We're a Pacific power, and we'll stand with friends and allies to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values in the Asia-Pacific region. That includes deepening our ties with Taiwan, a leading democracy, major economy, technology powerhouse – and a shining example of how an open society can effectively contain COVID-19. And our approach to China will focus on boosting American competitiveness, revitalizing our strengths at home, and renewing our alliances and leadership abroad. We'll work to collaborate with China when it's in our interest, including on public health and climate change.
America has always led the world not only with the example of our power, but the power of our example. To truly do that again, we also have to fix our broken immigration system, keeping families together and ensuring the United States continues to draw the world's best and brightest.
I'm running to build America back better, as a country of opportunity, unity, and new beginnings. A place made strong by generations of immigrants. A place where everyone has a voice and every vote counts. I'll lead on these issues, and more importantly, I'll listen. So please make sure you get your vote in today. Together we'll restore the soul of this nation we love.

One of the greatest designer I know. His album design works are something you can keep in your life. Every once a while you take out, they bring back to you all the memmories… 03/13/2012 at 7:35 pm
DESCRIBE YOUR NOMINATED WORK:
75 years ago, Macy’s grandfather left his family behind, boarding a boat in Keelung port in Taiwan heading for Osaka in Japan in pursuit of his dream as a jazz saxophonist, and he died there….75 years later, Macy, disappointed at her career as backup vocalist in Taiwan, decided to follow his grandfather’s footstep. She hopped on a plane, all alone, going to New York to pursuit her dream to make jazz music. Thus born the record After 75 Years. When I heard of this story, I realized this record is not just about music. It is also dream, memory, and passion. It is a journey across time and place, linked by family bond that was translated into 6 letters that travelled through the time and music. The envelops, stamps, papers, boats, pen handwriting, Japanese and Chinese characters, photos, and the last email. All of the proof that told the hidden secrets of the family touched me immensely and let me sink into deep thoughts. The one-year-and-half work was enjoyable, especially because it gave me a chance for the first time to fly from Asia to New York to bask in the soulful jazz music of local jazz bars. Only then did I realize the feeling of Macy’s grandfather when he embarked on that lonely trip chasing after his dream.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THIS PROJECT?
When Macy flew from New York to Taipei to talk to me, sharing the music and story with me, I suddenly realized that this time I would not be just a designer but a director to re-create those memories of dreams on printed paper. The process of patching different memories and stories into one whole piece once made me feel melancholy too. But the result gave me much more happiness.
WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT & PROCESS? DID YOU & THE BAND COLLABORATE?
In fact, Macy’s team had already done a design in New York. But one day, Macy accidentally saw an interview of me on TV talking about my works and ideals, she decided to engage me. She flew all the way from New York to Taipei and persuaded me into doing it. She has more confidence in me and myself, believing that I would translate the deep emotions and music of east and west into an artistic expression. The profound love and courageous pursuit of dream moved me so much that I decided to take this job. Without the same devotion and conviction, I couldn’t have made it cause my pay was already used up by the time I found the photographer and copywriter and flew to New York for the shooting!
WAS THE DESIGN/IMAGE YOU CREATED USED IN ANY OTHER PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS FOR THE ARTIST? PLEASE DESCRIBE:
Packaging design isn’t just sugar-coating. I always think that if one can express his heart through music, the packaging design should also deliver the emotions and thoughts of the music. It should touch people’s heart just like the melodies inside of it.
DESCRIBE WHAT IT WAS LIKE WORKING WITH THE MUSICAL ARTIST:
Each time I work with musicians, I feel like experiencing a different life. I enjoy listening and this has enriched my life.
WHAT OTHER INDEPENDENT MUSIC PROJECTS HAVE YOU WORKED ON?
Though I have always lived in the island of Taiwan I can listen to western music and the creative works via radio and other media. All these have become my nutrition and I always try to integrate various elements to create something new and unique. After 28 years in the business, the chance to always do something i haven’t yet done before keeps my passion alive and the opportunities to work with different talents are sheer pleasure to me. My works might seem more independent than independent. I did design for an album which features two grandmas from an indigenous tribe recording their tribe music in Spain. Another album features a children choir led by a principal at an elementary school located at a 1000-meter-high mountain in praise of God. Or a genius boy who hasn’t grown since the 5th grade flied from a small village on Taiwan’s east coast to Vienna to look for his dream. And there’re more…..Last time, I was very honored to receive the best packaging design from IMA for Island Story. To celebrate it, local government at my hometown held a press conference for me, allowing me to share my thoughts with the world. I made a vow there and then, saying that “I’d want to go farther into the mountains or the seaside to do the design. I want to contribute my skills and capabilities to those who still have dreams for music, even in the remote countryside.” The nomination of After 75 Years once again helped me realize my dream.
WHICH MUSICIAN’S WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH NEXT?
I’ve done it for 28 years in this island and now I’d like to work with musicians outside of my country. I haven’t done anything like reggae, punk, folk, world music, contemporary, blues, trance, break beat, big-beat, etc. As long as it’s something different, I’d like to give it a try.
WHAT ROLE WILL ALBUM ART/PHOTOGRAPHY PLAY IN A DIGITAL/STREAMING WORLD?
The age of digital music highlights the importance of physical texture of the packaging design. Like After 75 Years, if you haven’t touched it and flipped it though, you couldn’t have enjoyed it as much.
HOW HAVE CHANGES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AFFECTED YOUR CAREER & ART?
From 80s to now, the world has gone from vinyl, cassettes, walkman, CD, to MP3 and more. The evolution from analogue to digital music as well as the device has also made me grow. But whatever the tool is, I think man is born to sing. That will not never change.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT TO THE 11TH IMAS?
My friend in the US helped me apply for the competition of last year and this year. I changed my mind of not wanting to venture out. Now I want to share my works with people all around the world.
WHAT PHOTOGRAPHERS/GRAPHIC DESIGNERS/ARTISTS INSPIRE YOU?
They have different antenna that transmits different message than I do. Collaborating with them help me develop imagination I never had before. I love working with those geeks. Each time, we make each other’s eyes wide open!
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?
In 1995, I was the first Asian ever to be dominated for packaging design at Grammy. Ever since then, I’ve started to promote those records that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE WORKS FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR?
The music industry is about dream and passion. After finished the 2-year project of Story Island and one-year-and-an-half After 75 Years‘, I am now looking forward to meeting with musicians that share the same passion and dream as me.

I have a second confession to make. I actually quite admire Taylor Swift. I know, I know. I know she gets a lot of hate, and a lot of people don’t necessarily see her music as “real music”, whatever that means. I know liking her music is sometimes seen as “uncool”- how dare any serious musician say they like her stuff, it’s only for silly teenage girls. But if I’m honest, fewer and fewer people treat the whole Cantopop market as “real music” as well, so perhaps we kinda do share that in common. 🤷🏻♀️ So who am I to diss it? I actually really admire her, and definitely count her as one of my previously unspoken inspirations. I do resonate with the way she writes... because it’s kind of the way I write.
I recently watched her NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and if you don’t know about Tiny Desk, perhaps you could check it out and be inspired - it’s a YouTube channel where artists and musicians perform in a tiny cramped space behind a work desk - and it’s brilliant. I love the rawness of it, the realness of it, and the closeness of it. It takes what happens on a big stage into your average office work space. It was a surprise to see Taylor Swift there, because it usually features up-and-coming artists or jazz musicians, performances of which I enjoy thoroughly also. But this was a surprising one, and so I clicked. I admit I even got a tad bit emotional after watching it, not because of anything else but the fact that I can resonated with so so much the stuff she said about songwriting and her creative process, and I enjoyed how she picked the songs and played completely alone, stripped down and raw, in the songs’ demo versions. In between songs, she shared thoughts and her creative process so openly and vulnerably, and how she wrote her songs as self-therapy, usually with just one instrument, in her pajamas, in the middle of the night. In that format, she somehow still managed to find a dominant spot in the mainstream and manufactured pop world - and that was so reassuring for me because that’s how I have written a TON of my songs.
Very, very early on in my career, before R&K, one producer once said to me, “you’re not the best singer, you’re not really a great guitar player, piano you’re a little better but still not that great... but with everything put together, mayyyybe you would be able to become a little bit of something.”
And for me, to see someone like Taylor Swift do so well in this world, someone who doesn’t belt like Beyoncé, doesn’t shred on the guitar like John Mayer, doesn’t play keys like Alicia Keys, doesn’t riff like Ariana Grande... for someone like Taylor Swift to be the mega success that she is... is undeniably impressive, and downright inspiring to me. She doesn’t use fancy techy gear, she doesn’t use fancy chords, she doesn’t do fancy grooves or sing fancy riffs. She just writes songs like she writes her diary - but she’s also smart and catchy and commercial about it. She is an amazing storyteller of her own life, and without necessarily being the best at singing or any instrument, she was the best at telling her unique stories. With everything put together, and a strong belief in herself - she has used this creativity of hers to garner millions and millions of fans all around the world.
Sometimes, the mastery of a craft looks different for different people. Sometimes it’s not about technical perfection. Sometimes, those who are imperfect, broken, hurt, but headstrong, open, authentic, courageous, and unapologetic are more interesting. It’s like found their own way to harness their scars or life experiences, and turn them into doors leading to their eventual evolution through creativity. They tell stories instead of showing off. It’s reassuring and also comforting that this still sells, with this much competition in the market, and resonates with me so much.
I then watched the TED talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love after the tiny desk because Taylor said she watched it with tears when inspiration didn’t come. And I just teared myself also. Touched tears. Tears of inspiration. Tears of joy in finding people that seem to think like me, who share the weight of my worries, but are successful and made an impact in the world. I found myself nodding viciously in agreement idiotically in my own living room, when they share the anxieties, insecurities and fears that typically consume the mind of creatives. I am definitely an overthinker so I’m a victim of all that was mentioned. Ok, you’ll have to watch it to understand. But it felt like I was meant to listen to this. It’s based on the daunting feeling of failure when inspiration doesn’t come, or feeling like your best work is “untoppable” and therefore your best days are behind you. But inspiration isn’t from within you. Inspiration is this mysterious force in the universe, and you just have to catch it when it comes, and even when it doesn’t, just keep showing up for your part of the job anyway until it does. And when time comes, let inspiration, this outer force in the universe take over. You don’t have to be sad for writing a bad song, or too proud for writing a good one. Don’t beat yourself up, and just keep doing what you do. Leave that fear behind you. Absolutely life changing.
And with this, I’m gonna go turn on my water tap of inspiration and try to work on some songwriting now. Thanks for checking in 🙂
Till next time.
Choose love, and bring light.

What were you looking at now, I dreamt about you
I got killed by kindness, in the shade of his tree
What were you looking at now, I saw the shadow of you
I was shivering with kindness, in that arms
I am cold when I touch the warmth
I am small when I touch the kindness
Your heart is too big for this big world
There's nothing I can do but swim in it
Tiny, Empty, I have nothing at all
To be treated with kindness always makes me feel ashamed
Before I knew it, I lose it
That's why your gaze is deeply engraved in my heart
What were you looking at now, I was looking at your eyes
I got killed by kindness, in the shade of his tree
What were you looking at now, I saw the shadow of you
I was shivering with kindness, in that arms
Go back and find the affection we left behind
Bring back the emotion filled with warm feelings now
Frozen heart melting into love
Flowering season is coming back
What were you looking at now, I was looking at your eyes
I got killed by kindness, in the shade of his tree
That was good enough, Stronger than anything
Kindness was the best, was the only thing we needed...
