Whenever I go to Tainan and tell my friends they are jealous, In a good way. If Taiwan is a cake, then Tainan is definitely the cherry on top. And sorry, I won’t mention all the beautiful places to visit here. Also - I will skip the fabulous historical part. I will go straight to the point - FOOD!
Recently, I was invited by the Bureau of Economic Development, Tainan City Government and NCKU Research and Development Foundation to a 3-day trip, and visited 20 shops. You can always count on the kindness and hospitality of the Tainan people. But don't worry, If I was invited, my camera was invited too, and that means I did my best to show off those places, and now I will pay back those nice people, and I am going to invite you on the trip too; are you ready?
PART 01 - When in Tainan, eat as the Tainanese do! - A guide to flavorful, popular (and English speaking) places serving Tainan food!
Taiwanese food is just extraordinary. Everybody loves it. No doubt about it. But now, you need to know that Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and because of that - the variety of foods is richer here than anywhere else. So I will introduce a few places around Tainan where you can get local food. So take your chopsticks in the hand and let’s commence our mouth-watering journey around Tainan!
子龍點鴨 (Zi long dian ya)
As a person born and raised in Europe, I am not really used to eating ducks the way they are usually served in Taiwan. I don't really like messing with bones. But here was a great surprise! They prepare meals removing bones. They sell duck with dried noodles or rice, and also have plenty of side dishes, too. The most special one is duck feet with cucumber, which is really good. Another thing is - the restaurant is located in a typical Tainan style neighbourhood near the old street, so after the tasty dishes you can stroll around there for a while.
磨磨茶 (Mo mo cha)
It’s a chic tea house waiting for you in one of the narrow streets downtown in Tainan (walking distance from the train station). The owner showed and let me make my own matcha from dry tea leaves. Usually tea shops are supplied by whole suppliers (importing tea in bulk). However, this is not the case here - the owner’s family has run a tea plantation for 3 generations; you can taste and say - the tea flows through his veins! They serve a whole variety of delicious teas from Taiwan, for instance: high mountain green tea, oolong tea, tea with fruit juice, milk tea, and more.
The place has stunning interiors that are simple, but you can feel a Taiwanese coziness inside. Momocha is a great place to sit and relax, read a book. Just enjoy your gourmet teas and let time stop for a while.
Apart from the teas and drink you can also find here food, such as Gua Bao. If you speak a bit of Chinese you will know that Han Bao (漢堡) is a word for hamburger. Basically, it's a burger but instead of bread they use a steamed bun. If you are in Tainan it's a must try. :)
禾記嫩骨飯 (Hé jì nèn gú fàn)
This is one very special Chinese restaurant. This place is particularly famous in Tainan because it’s already become a chain. Actually, the dishes are very simple - such as rice and meat, but…. the devil is in the details, and in this case it’s the special way they prepare their meats. Of course, that's the chef's secret, but they're delicious. The flag dish is braised pork with soft bones. And indeed the bones are so soft that you can easily eat them! Apart from that you can find other dishes, such as Braised Pork Noodles.
三船熱炒100 (三船の鳗丼 Sānchuán de mán jǐng)
100 stir-fried Taiwanese traditional food. You can see a lot of places with number "100" on the street in Taiwan and especially at night there are crowds feasting there. The number 100 in the name is not an accident here - it’s the price of most of the dishes on the menu - around 100$. Apart from Taiwanese delicacies - such a pig heart, intestines and so on, you can also order typical Japanese meals - such as freshly made sashimi, sushi. It’s worth mentioning that the owner is an eel farmer, so if you love this kind of fish, you will find great quality unagi here!
This is one of the five stories that are coming soon. Feel free to ask any questions you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan… never, or not recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

Thanks Vogue Hong Kong for featuring me as one of the HK street photographers 🙏🏼
https://www.voguehk.com/en/article/art-lifestyle/best-hong-kong-photographers-instagram/
Below is the previously unreleased complete interview in which I shared about my inspirations, creative flow and philosophy, as well as some techniques. Feel free to take a look & CLS (comment, like & share) 😀
——
(V: Vogue J: Jeremy)
V:
What/who inspired your photography style?
J:
When I started photography, Hong Kong’s legendary photographer Ho Fan’s work has inspired me a lot, mostly about the use of light and composition as well as the way to authentically capture the secular life of Hong Kong people. Around 6-7 years ago, I met some friends from Instagram whose double exposure film works are fascinating. They have inspired me to explore deeper in this special way of photo story-telling, which I tried to incorporate daily ordinary elements to make new interpretations of what I feel and perceive about the city. After years of experimentation, I am still enjoying the possibility double exposure brings to my creative journey.
——
V:
How would you describe the Hong Kong that you present in your photos?
J:
Hong Kong is a city of varying landscapes (hills, harbours, hyper-dense urban hubs etc). My photos always try to illustrate snippets of things happening around the city, mixing the common experience with a bit of poetic imagination if possible (including openness or even ambiguity for the readers to interpret). At the same time, I always put in mind not to create something too cliche or off-the-ground. Words also play a role in my photos too, as they could add another layer (or twist) of background info or feel to the photos themselves.
——
V:
In what way do you present it?
J:
Analogy with an implicit storyline is what I always aim at when I take photos. Although double exposure comprises of only a fraction of my photography work, I believe it suits my visual philosophy well in (1) recording things happening or surrounding around myself/the city in terms of both factual archives and personal-based memory, (2) freeing up the mind by letting imagination flow in (as to temporarily overlap the concrete realities into some forms of surrealism, creating as a remedy for the chaotic world). So I would say it is an aesthetically refreshing way of visual representation.
——
V:
Why did you choose this photo?
J:
One of my mostly used double exposure approaches is the experimental blending of observed urban moments with on-the-spot patterns/materials (I have been using the instagram hashtag #rambler_hkdouble to collect my double exposure photos posted on IG). For this picture of Mongkok, I first captured a V-shaped pattern of bluish/greenish tiles from a nearby pedestrian underpass, then I captured the second layer on the Argyle Street footbridge which oversees the V-shape urban canyon of Mongkok. This was taken by an old Nikon film camera with a discontinued film stock called Rollei CN200. I like how the grains and tints worked together to offer a mood of ruggedness.
——
V:
Is there a message that you’d like to share through your photos?
J:
I always try to capture the subtlety of a place (incl. urban fabrics and artefacts) through compositions and lighting. I hope my photos would bring a sense of resonance, reminiscence and reflection to my audience (whether HKer or not), connecting them with a place’s own history, her present reality and an extrapolation of the future.
My main channel of photo sharing is on Instagram, but I really treasure the interactions with my audience both online and offline, local and overseas, mostly through web comments, my own photo exhibitions or occasional organised photowalks. I love the moments when I try to inspire people, I got reversely inspired by them too. I hope these modes of sharing could continue in the future.

best camera for street photography 在 Miura Haruma (三浦春馬 ) Facebook 八卦
Miura Haruma. Oh what is there to say... He's 178 cm tall (aka 5'10") and he feels that is a decent height. He weights 63 kg (aka 138.75 lbs), and he feels that is a decent weight. Haruma considers himself a good mix appearance wise so he comes out, in his opinion, average. But being average isn't bad. He's content with not being a hotshot. Sure, Haruma plays with his looks a bit. His hairdo changes every so often just to keep things fresh. It's the artistic side to him that convinces him he suddenly needs bleached blonde streaks across his forehead, or layer upon layer until he could be metaphorically compared to an onion....what, not a good joke? Man... -shrugs-.
The most noteworthy component of Haruma's appearance is most definitely his smile. Let's just face it. He's got a killer smile, and his cute little eyes scrunch up just right so he actually looks like the ^-^ smiley. His mother always said he was adorable when he smiled, so of course he likes smiling. Who doesn't want to please their mother? Haru has a good 'annoyed' face too...all in all his features are quite expressive. This means Haruma has a hard time hiding what he's thinking, but in this business it's a good thing too. For one thing, people can tell because of his grin when working with the camera that he sincerely loves his job to bits.Haruma maintains a very calm and happy-go-easy sort of personality. He, by definition almost, is not an extravagant person. The simple things in life are all he really needs. A few good friends, mostly from his non-work life, a few co-workers he gets along with, a good caring family. That's all he really needs, he feels. Well, that and his camera. But when it comes to people he's not mister social butterfly, but he's not mister social outcast either. Haruma lives in his own little in between world where the thing that matters is capturing the rest of the world on film.
He absolutely adores his camera and all his photography work. It wasn't the job he'd expected, but when the offer came for him to pursue photography as a profession appeared he snatched it with no regrets. Live life with no regrets. That's his motto, more or less. He finishes the things he starts, tries his best to be polite to everyone, and cares abundantly for those simple things that stick out as important in his life. His camera is never far away from Haruma. He carries it with him almost everywhere he goes. Yes, that can get annoying, but he doesn't just want to capture celebrity life through the photoshoots and whatnot. Haruma will take a picture of anything, from a cat passing by on the street to a blimp floating lazily over the city. THe whole world fascinates him, so he goes out of his apartment every morning with his eyes open, not prepared for anything because he doesn't know what fascinating site he'll encounter next.
When Haruma goes for something in life, he jumps wholeheartedly towards it. His work is a good example. His favorite word is Hisshi which translates basically to putting your whole self into what you do. His work is all of Haruma. His friendships are all of Haruma. His family is all of Haruma. His lovelife is all of Haruma too (though at the moment he hasn't found the young lady to spark his interest.) He's not the best at everything, and is well aware of that, but that doesn't mean he won't give his all when trying.
Along with his camera, Haruma brings his mp3 player with him just about anywhere. It's good for inspiration. Like I mentioned earlier, he's an artistic mind. If he weren't then he would never survive in this business but so far his work has been quite comfortable. The job is relatively new, but he started apprenticing once he graduated high school and though his work is still supervised occasionally by higher ups, he is trusted to get the job done right. He's human and makes mistakes. Sometimes the lighting is messed up or he just can't get the right pose or expression out of the model. It can't expected to be perfect every time, but no matter what, Haru does his best and should things go wrong he works harder along with a polite apology. And when you look into his eyes, it's obvious that his apologies are sincere. It was a quiet household. Haruma, his mother, and his father. They had a dog once but as usually happens in time with pets, he went up to doggy heaven. He grew up with a simple life in the Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Went to school. Grew. Studied. He lived a pretty standard life. His parents noted early on that their son was special artistically. He was good at crafts, colored inside the lines before he even had to be told that that was the proper thing to do. He seemed to know which colors looked good together, and where everything should go on a canvas, even with finger painting.
His mum, quite pleased with her son's talent, signed him up for art lessons, but while he was talented, as the years went by his peer's work in those classes would often outshine his. So he was shuffled from drawing to painting to even sewing for one awkward summer before Haruma picked up a camera and everything fell into place. Needless to say, Haruma was good. Very good. He started entering photography competitions in middle school and placed high in all of them. In high school he took more lessons along side his normal schooling and succeeding in being noticed by professionals. Haruma was sought out and though he personally had been planning on going to college to study photography and design, this seemed like an option just as worthwhile.
Haruma began an apprenticeship at age eighteen, and for two years studied photography under the masters. It was more of the glamorous world too, and while Haruma would have been happy just taking pictures of animals or landscape, he ended up taking photos of celebrities. Not that he minded. When he turned twenty Haruma was told that he could go independent now, that those he'd studied with would be glad to continue guiding him should he ever need help. And Haruma bowed thanking them for their guidance.

Combine what is technically possible with what makes sense photographically.‘ A concept that has been epitomised by Leica since Oskar Barnack laid the foundations for 35 mm photography more than a hundred years ago, with the original Leica.
This concept has been central to our company’s philosophy - based on the art of engineering on one hand, and on visionary risk-taking on the other. A philosophy that leads to innovation, rewriting photographic history again and again. Got to use the brand new Canon EOS R5 for an hour. I also got to try the RF 85MM f2. Immediately took them out to do some street photography. I wasn't too sure what to expect but I was pretty surprised! Loving the ability to crop with the 45MP and the sharpness of the RF 85MM F2.
This a POV of me shooting in the streets. At the end, I share my thoughts and experience shooting with this setup. Let me know if you have any questions!

Managed to borrow this camera for about a week to test and do a real world review for street photography. I didn't want to shoot a review in a studio-ish setting cause not many people shoot like that. I played with the camera prior to this so I have a good grasp on what is good and not so good about the camera. As the title mentions, I'm reviewing this camera in context of street photography so I only discuss features that are most important to me for it. But hopefully you can take some from this too!
It's a crazy video, 20 minutes of me talking about a camera but I love it. I just love talking gear and photography. In a nutshell, this is a fantastic camera and it's hard to hate it. It has great image quality with enough features but most importantly, it is a fun camera to shoot with. And perhaps, that is all that is needed.
FULL DISCLAIMER:
I am a Canon Malaysia EOS Youth Ambassador but these are my own opinions of the camera. Canon did not pay me to do this review but they did loan me the camera.
