Did you know AIT is a big supporter of Taiwan’s Chinese language education? In collaboration with the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, AIT is pleased to kick off the first U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative activity-Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Symposium for 200 Taiwan Chinese language teachers. This morning, AIT Director Christensen delivered the opening remarks, along with Deputy Secretary General Szu-Chien Hsu, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, Education Minister Wen-Chung Pan, and OCAC Minister Chen-Yuan Tung to support the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative at the Taipei International Convention Center. This symposium provides an opportunity for the teachers to learn about a variety of resources that U.S. and Taiwan have to offer and to talk about ways to enhance Taiwan’s Chinese language education. #Taiwan is set to send more #Mandarin teachers to the #US and encourage more US students to learn the language in Taiwan, as part of the Taiwan-US Initiative which launched earlier today. At the same time Taiwanese students will be encouraged to improve their #English in the United Stated and at home in Taiwan!

The launch ceremony took place earlier today, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on strengthening cooperation in education between the two countries.

The ceremony was presided over by MOFA Minister Joseph Wu, with addresses from AIT Director Brent Christensen, Deputy Minister of Education Mon-Chi Lio and Vice chairman of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Yuan-rong Lu.

Could learning #Mandarin give you an edge in your future career? If you’re in the #US, Mandarin teachers might be headed to a school near you under a new initiative launched by MOFA and AIT last month, so why not start practicing your ‘nihao’ and ‘xiexie’. The initiative will also see US nationals recruited to teach English on #Taiwan and deepen cultural exchange between both countries.

Following the launch of the Education Initiative by MOFA and #AIT last month, the US Department of Education has published a blogpost reviewing the progress made so far, including the results of a dialogue and the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
