Hearing the Voice of God
“He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”” (1 Kings 19:11-13 WEB)
When God moves, He does so in great power, but when He speaks to His children, most of the time it is almost like a whisper—you have to really pay attention and listen closely.
Personally when I pray in tongues, I will go on for a while and then pause with my eyes closed to receive any words, Bible verses or mental pictures from the Holy Spirit.
Prayer is not about you just saying words to God. It is a two-way conversation. We are talking to a living God who speaks.
When you pray, expect to hear Him in your spirit.
Since the voice of God is a “still small voice” inside, we have to really tune out all distractions and noise of the world if possible.
Find a quiet place to be with the Lord, speak to Him and just quieten your mind, waiting to receive words, pictures or something else from Him.
One time when I was considering a prayer request for healing from a lady I don’t know, I quieted my mind, prayed in tongues and waited for the Holy Spirit to show me what condition the person had.
In my mind I saw the lady looking down at her tummy frustrated and I sensed her desire for weight loss. I was also shown that there was a problem with her ovaries. That region in her body’s silhouette was highlight in red.
I also received that these two health problems happened due to her pregnancy in the past.
I told the lady what I saw in my mind and she confirmed it to be true. I then proceeded to pray for her healing.
This is an example of the gift of word of knowledge in operation.
See the Holy Spirit as a trustworthy Helper who you can speak with comfortably as a close Friend.
He’s inside you to reveal to you the secret things that God knows.
The next time you pray, expect to hear from Him. He’s always speaking, but you must focus to hear that still small voice.
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. They will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him; for they don’t know the voice of strangers.”” (John 10:3-5 WEB)
How do you recognize the voice of your Good Shepherd and avoid being tricked by the devil’s voice instead?
Jesus will always speak to you in love. The voice is never condemning or angry. When you hear Him, you will always be filled with peace and inward joy. He is the Prince of Peace.
To recognize the voice of Jesus better, you have to familiarize with Him.
Read the four gospels and see how good, gracious, merciful, gentle, kind and loving He is with those who place their faith in Him.
To understand the four gospels better, you must be able to rightly divide the Old Covenant of Law and New Covenant of Grace.
Those four books are like a transition period, Law passing the baton to Grace.
If you aren’t standing on a firm foundational understanding of the New Covenant of Grace yet, you may get fearful or confused by some things that Jesus said which were directed at people who were still under dispensation of Law at that time.

“God conceals the revelation of his word in the hiding place of his glory. But the honor of kings is revealed by how they thoroughly search out the deeper meaning of all that God says.” (Proverbs 25:2 TPT)
Pass the Bible to language “experts’ who are unbelievers and they will find all sorts of so-called contradictions in it.
The Bible is so precious because it’s a book that needs the Holy Spirit to unlock the revelations within.
It takes a child of God who has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to understand God’s word and to preach its meaning to the unsaved and uninitiated.
You can’t just read the Bible like it’s any other book. The Holy Spirit must open your eyes and mind to understand the word.
Most unbelievers I’ve spoken to think that Christianity is all about keeping rules and regulations and obeying the Ten Commandments.
Why is this so? It’s because our fleshly minds understand the concept of “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth”—in other words, “you get what you deserve”.
However the unspiritual man cannot understand Grace, since Grace is the unmerited favor of God, and the flesh lusts against the things of God.
The flesh wants to earn its accomplishments, to boast in its own strength.
Sadly, there are still some well-meaning Christians who are preaching this fleshly message of obedience to the Law.
It’s because they read God’s word with their mind, interpreting it by man’s understanding, without actively seeking revelation through the Holy Spirit inside them.
It’s strange that the legalists who champion keeping the Law never practice the following passage themselves:
“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire.” (Matthew 18:8-9 WEB)
Dear legalist, if you take Jesus’ “red letter words” seriously, then why aren’t you cutting off your hands and feet when they cause you to sin?
Why aren’t you gouging out your eyes when they cause you to lust, covet or hate?
Self-righteous, legalistic folks spiritualize the difficult parts to suit their doctrine. When it’s inconvenient or impossible for them, they just ignore it.
These kinds of hypocrites were Jesus’ main opponents during His earthly ministry.
Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the Gospel of Grace which is the revelation of God’s great love for mankind.
He will show you that forgiveness of sins, peace with God, and every blessing has been purchased through the precious blood of Jesus Christ that was shed at the cross.
Today we only need to receive God’s goodness by faith—believing in your heart and confessing it with your mouth.
Let the scales of religion fall off your eyes, so that you may see God’s word clearly through the lens of Grace.
I want to recommend my 4-eBook bundle which teaches the four gospels through the lens of Grace.
In it, every parable, miracle and saying of Jesus Christ is explained so that you won’t be confused any longer.
When you read the four gospels the right way, you’ll be encouraged by God’s love without feeling any sense of condemnation towards you!

“Be careful therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has.”” (Luke 8:18 WEB)
At a church service how do you hear about Jesus?
Here are some possible attitudes of hearing the sermon:
- Hearing a bit and then falling asleep for the rest of the service
- Hearing halfheartedly while using your handphone for entertainment
- Hearing attentively but skeptically like you already know it all—to catch any mistakes made by the preacher with the intention to discredit him
- Hearing attentively but applying all the truths shared for others (example: spouse, friends, children), thinking that you don’t need it yourself
- Hearing selectively, only accepting the parts about blessings towards you but hardening your heart when any words of correction convict you.
- Hearing with an open, teachable heart, receiving the word like you’re spiritually-hungry and that revelations about Jesus are what you need to satisfy you and save you from all troubles
Which one of these types of hearing best describes you?
If it’s the last one, then very good. Don’t be afraid that you’ll fall for false teachings because if you’re sincerely listening and conscious that the Holy Spirit will bear witness to the truth, then whenever a preacher teaches false doctrine, the Holy Spirit inside you will also alert you to the part that’s false.
It could happen through a disturbance in your spirit, like a lack of peace with regards to that word.
“As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him.” (1 John 2:27 WEB)
In our starting verse above, what did Jesus mean by “he who has”? Has what?
I believe it means has Jesus as Lord.
When you have placed faith in Jesus as your Lord, all blessings will be given to you.
Through His finished work at the cross, you qualify to receive every blessing and promise of God.
However if you don’t have Jesus as Lord, then whatever riches, power, strength, talents that you think belong to you will be taken away from you upon death—all that remains is an eternity in the lake of fire, utterly separated from God.
“So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.” (Romans 10:17 AMP)
Dear brethren, when we hear, it’s all about receiving a word about Jesus. That’s how faith comes to empower us to appropriate every blessing of God that’s promised in His word.
Hearing about Jesus is a time of impartation of life and life more abundantly.
Receiving the Gospel is as important as food to a starving man and blood transfusion to a person who is about to die from excessive blood loss.
Will you catch this revelation and allow it to transform the way you hear about Jesus at home and in church? Have a blessed week!
