There is power in knowing my struggle is your struggle and yours, mine.” - Dan Wilkins →https://bit.ly/2DEGmVN
One of the reasons why I have always loved Taiwan, is because of its open-mindedness, and it’s ability to embrace people who are different. But I worry that that’s changing.
I often post about issues related to people with disabilities and migrant workers, but it’s much harder to post about things a little closer to home. It’s always easier to advocate for others than for myself. But sometimes you just need to put yourself out there.
Taiwanese voters head to the polls tomorrow to vote on FIVE referendums related to same-sex marriage and teaching gender equality / LGBT issues in the classroom. The amount of vitriol and fake news that has emerged in recent weeks has saddened me, and made me question whether this is really the Taiwan that I’ve come to know and love.
I do not have the right to vote in Taiwan, but I do hope that those with that right will vote to preserve those values of open-mindedness and the ability to embrace those who are different (by voting NO on referendums 10-12, and YES on referendums 14-15).
I recently read an article that drew beautiful connections between the various struggles of people with disabilities, migrant workers, indigenous peoples, and the LGBT community. It contained a phrase that found particular resonance with me: “There is power in knowing my struggle is your struggle and yours, mine.” – (Dan Wilkins). I have carried that phrase with me for years, and will continue to do so and to use my voice to advocate all those who find themselves marginalised, wherever they may be in the world. <3
