I am Bart 戴思博 from the Netherlands, currently a fourth-year master's student at the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature. It is my honor to have the opportunity to represent NTU's international students here today.
If you ask me why I came to Taiwan to study Taiwan literature, I'd have to go back five years to when I was an exchange student here. At the time the Sunflower Movement was taking place, which left me with a very deep impression. This was an eye-opener for someone like me who was originally not interested in politics, and made me want to learn more about Taiwan culture and Taiwanese people's spirit of resistance. Since I have always been interested in literature, choosing to do a degree in Taiwan literature was the most obvious choice. I did not expect, however, that doing graduate school in Taiwan would be so difficult. It wasn't just the language that was challenging, it was also an intellectual challenge. Even so, being able to get to know so many outstanding teachers and students has been a real privilege. I have moreover had the chance to be a teaching assistant for various courses, and the frequent exchanges with Taiwanese and international students have also contributed to my own academic development.
My deepest impression during my several semesters as a teaching assistant, was when I was TA for a course on Taiwan's museums. This course introduced Taiwan's culture and history through museums and was taught in English, so half the students were international, half were Taiwanese. We also took trips to museums, and the one that left the deepest impression, was the National 228 Memorial Museum. At the time I helped the museum director translate, which was a real test of my Mandarin proficiency, but more importantly, the museum allowed me to learn how big the influence of the 228 Incident was on Taiwan's society. Through discussions in our class I also learned how different countries deal with national traumas they have gone through. This experience influenced the direction of my own academic research.

Nearly 80 percent of Taiwanese are expected to head to the polls on Nov. 29 to vote in Taiwan's nine-in-one elections. Voters will choose candidates ranging from mayors of Taiwan's six biggest cities to local village chiefs.
Perhaps the most hotly contested mayoral race is that of Taipei. Thus far, six major Taiwanese media outlets, including those favoring the ruling Nationalist Party (KMT) and the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), have all reported Ko Wen-je, a doctor and an independent candidate, to be leading the polls. His competitor, Sean Lien, son of former Taiwan Vice President Lien Chan, is shown to be trailing by at least 10 percentage points in most recent surveys.
Both candidates are running for public office for the first time as they bid to succeed Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin, who will step down in December after serving two consecutive four-year terms. Of the five other candidates in the mayoral race, none is expected to win more than 2 percent of the vote.
Sadly, reporting of the campaign has not adequately covered substantive discussions of the candidates’ objectives and plans. Rather, they have focused on the mudslinging between Ko and Lien, the two front running candidates. On Tuesday, Sean Lien's campaign manager Alex Tsai stated that he is suing Ko Wen-je and his team for aggravated defamation and perjury. Ko’s camp, on the other hand, has implied that his competitors are involved in an alleged eavesdropping scandal and that they have made false accusations of him engaging in unethical medical practices.
Currently, a popular public opinion is that the KMT, despite having ruled the city since 1998, may lose the support of young independent voters because of Lien’s alleged image as someone owing his success to his wealthy family, and also because of the general discontent over the ruling government’s handling of national issues such as food safety and education.
(Please study hard and don’t make your teacher unhappy!)
