When we are hit with a sudden, tragic loss, our initial reaction tends to be disbelief. Then comes denial, because it is too painful and surreal that someone who was part of our lives is suddenly gone forever. Then, as reality sets in, we grieve. But finally, for us to go on and live our lives to the fullest in ways that would make those whom we lost proud and happy, must come acceptance.
I did not know Kobe Bryant personally. But I grew up playing basketball and watching him play. Every basketball player and fan knows how much Kobe meant to the sport and to us. No matter if you rooted for or against him, you had to respect him. You were in awe of him.
Yet, more than that, I respect Kobe Bryant for how he lived his life. It is almost unfathomable to achieve the level of greatness in a field that Kobe achieved in his and be so universally admired and loved by his peers. In addition to that, he was only getting started in his new career as a storyteller and filmmaker, where he was showing great promise. Being able to do all these things says a lot about the man’s character.
Sadly, some people tend to focus on the mistakes a person makes and consequently judge or condemn that person entirely. What those people seem to forget is that everyone makes mistakes. A mistake, no matter how grave, should not be the final judgment on a person’s character. We should look at the entirety of a person’s life and how the person deals with his mistakes, whether they show repentance and work hard to keep improving themselves. We need to be more compassionate and we need to appreciate a person’s desire to do good.
I believe, and this has been attested to by many people, that Kobe worked tirelessly to better himself and to also improve the quality of life for people around him. Thereby, Kobe is a great inspiration to millions of people, not just as a basketball player, but as a human being who strived to be the best person he could be and never gave up.
My condolences go out to Kobe’s family and friends and to all the people who lost their loved ones today. I hope you can find solace in the memories they created and the legacies they leave behind.

Dear friends,
I just returned from visiting DSAI at HKL. He is in because of unstable blood pressure, but sends his best regards to all.
The party leadership and I know and understand the many difficulties you all faced in the Sarawak state elections. From the lack of resources to the acts of intimidation and more, I believe you strived to do your very best.
The struggle for change is not an easy path. Some of you have recently joined us in our fight for reforms, while others have been there from the very beginning of the movement. What we collectively share is the spirit of Reformasi, whose fire I hope burns ever more brightly in these difficult times.
I have asked the leadership to identify weaknesses, to learn from our shortcomings, and to take necessary steps to correct our strategy and organizational capacity in time for the next big battle: GE14. In the mean time, the party will do what it can to assist you all.
I pray that we will be given the strength to overcome the naysayers and those who try to belittle our efforts to bring reform to Sarawak. I believe that we can - and will - overcome.
This is what I can offer and promise as we need to heal the party and be better prepared for the next battle for justice.
