The modern Cosmograph Daytona has more in common with racing cars than just history: a key feature of its mechanical movement is the introduction of a vertical clutch to engage the chronograph function. It works on exactly the same principle as the clutch in a car: when the start/stop pusher is pressed, the chronograph mechanism is coupled to the running watch movement by friction contact of two discs onto each other. This sets the chronograph in motion just like the wheels of a car gain traction from the engine when the clutch pedal is released. This system offers significant performance gains for the chronograph function. With one major difference from a car: the Daytona’s clutch is merely 5.595 mm wide – less than the surface of a confetti.
