เป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๕ แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เสด็จพระราชสมภพเมื่อวันอังคารที่ ๒๐ กันยายน พ.ศ. ๒๓๙๖ เป็นพระราชโอรสในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๔ และสมเด็จพระเทพศิรินทราบรมราชินี เสวยราชสมบัติเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี เดือน ๑๑ ขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ ปีมะโรง พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๑ พระองค์ทรงทำคุณประโยชน์ให้แก่ประเทศไทยอย่างมากมาย ทรงได้รับการถวายสมัญญานามว่า "พระปิยมหาราช" แปลว่า "มหาราชผู้ทรงเป็นที่รัก" และว่า "พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง" แต่น้อยคนนักที่จะทราบว่าพระนามของพระองค์มีความหมายและที่มาอย่างไร

พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้รับพระราชทานนามว่า สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้าจุฬาลงกรณ์ บดินทรเทพมหามงกุฎ บุรุษยรัตนราชรวิวงศ์วรุตมพงศบริพัตร สิริวัฒนราชกุมาร ซึ่งคำว่า "จุฬาลงกรณ์" นั้นแปลว่า เครื่องประดับผม อันหมายถึง "พระเกี้ยว" ที่มีรูปเป็นส่วนยอดของพระมหามงกุฎหรือยอดชฎา

สำหรับ "จุลมงกุฎ" หรือ "พระเกี้ยว" เป็นศิราภรณ์ประดับพระเกศาหรือพระเศียรของพระราชโอรสและพระราชธิดาของพระมหากษัตริย์ ที่มีรูปเป็นส่วนยอดของพระมหามงกุฎหรือยอดชฎา นอกจากนี้จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ก็ยังคงได้รับพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตให้ใช้ "ตราพระเกี้ยว" เป็นเครื่องหมายประจำมหาวิทยาลัยอีกด้วย

คำว่า "จุฬาลงกรณ์" นั้นมีความหมายว่า เครื่องประดับศีรษะ หรือ จุลมงกุฎ ซึ่งมีความหมายเชื่อมโยงกับพระนามของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๔ ขณะทรงพระเยาว์ นั่นคือ "เจ้าฟ้ามงกุฎ"

ต่อมาในการจัดพระราชพิธีบรมราชภิเษกเมื่อพระองค์มีพระชนมายุครบ ๒๐ พรรษาในปี ๒๔๑๖ ได้รับการเฉลิมพระปรมาภิไธยว่า "พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ฯ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว"

คำว่า "จุล หมายถึง เล็ก น้อย" ดังนั้น จุลจอมเกล้า จึงหมายถึง "จอมเกล้าน้อย" ซึ่งในลักษณะเดียวกับที่ฝรั่งใช้คำว่า "junior" เช่น "Tom junior" ซึ่งหมายถึง Tom ผู้ลูก "พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าฯ" จึงหมายถึง "พระราชโอรสของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าฯ"

นอกจากนี้พระโอรสของสมเด็จฯ เจ้าฟ้าจักรพงศ์ภูวนาถ ก็มีพระนามว่า พระองค์เจ้าจุลจักรพงศ์ ซึ่งเป็นอีกตัวอย่างที่ใช้คำว่า "จุล"

ส่วนคำว่า "จอม" หมายถึง "ยอดที่สูงสุด" และ "เกล้า. หมายถึง "หัว" ซึ่งใช้เฉพาะในโวหารแสดงความเคารพอย่างสูง ดังนั้น "จอมเกล้า" จึงหมายถึง "ผู้ที่เป็นหัวอันสูงสุด"

จากนั้นพระองค์ทรงประกอบพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ ๑๑ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๑ โดยได้รับการเฉลิมพระปรมาภิไธยว่า
"พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ฯ พระจุฬาลงกรณ์เกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว"

ต่อมาเมื่อพระองค์มีพระชนมายุครบ ๒๐ พรรษา เมื่อวันที่ ๑๕ กันยายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๖ จึงผนวชเป็นพระภิกษุ ณ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม แล้วเสด็จไปประทับ ณ วัดบวรนิเวศราชวรวิหารเป็นเวลา ๑๕ วัน หลังจากทรงลาสิกขาแล้ว ได้มีการจัดพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกครั้งที่ ๒ ขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ ๑๖ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๖โดยได้รับการเฉลิมพระปรมาภิไธยในครั้งนี้ว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ฯ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มีพระนามตามจารึกในพระสุบรรณบัฎว่า

สิ่งที่ทำให้แคนาดาก้าวขึ้นมาเป็น 1 ใน 3 ของประเทศที่มีปริมาณสำรองน้ำมันดิบมากที่สุดในโลก
คือขุมทรัพย์ใต้พื้นดิน ที่เรียกว่า “ทรายน้ำมัน (Oil Sand)”

ทรายน้ำมัน คือแหล่งปิโตรเลียมประเภทหนึ่งที่มีส่วนประกอบของ ทราย โคลน น้ำ และ ไบทูเมน (ส่วนผสมของสารประกอบไฮโดรคาร์บอน) ที่มีความหนืดสูงและมีสีดำ

โดยวิธีการผลิตน้ำมันดิบจากทรายน้ำมัน ต้องใช้ความร้อนสูงเกือบ 200 องศาเซลเซียส เพื่อทำให้ไบทูเมน อ่อนตัวแล้วแยกออกมาจากทรายและโคลนจนกลายเป็นของเหลวในรูป "น้ำมันดิบ" แล้วจึงนำไปใช้หรือกลั่นตามขั้นตอนปกติต่อไป

แม้ว่าแหล่งทรายน้ำมันจะมีอยู่ในหลายพื้นที่อื่นๆ ในโลก เช่น เวเนซุเอลา รัสเซีย หรือแม้แต่ในประเทศไทย ซึ่งถูกพบที่อำเภอฝาง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่

แต่แหล่งทรายน้ำมันที่สำคัญและใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกนั้น อยู่ที่รัฐแอลเบอร์ตา ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางตะวันตกของประเทศแคนาดา

รัฐแอลเบอร์ตา ที่มีพื้นที่ 661,848 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ 6% ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมดของแคนาดา
อย่างไรก็ตาม รัฐนี้กลับมีมูลค่า GPD มากกว่า 8.1 ล้านล้านบาท หรือ 14% ของมูลค่า GDP ของทั้งประเทศแคนาดา

ปัจจุบัน รัฐแอลเบอร์ตามีประชากรอยู่จำนวน 4.4 ล้านคน หรือประมาณ 12% ของจำนวนประชากรทั้งหมดของประเทศ

ซึ่งหนึ่งในปัจจัยสำคัญคือ การเติบโตของอุตสาหกรรมน้ำมันที่รัฐแห่งนี้นั่นเอง

ในช่วงระหว่างปี 1990-2003 มูลค่าเศรษฐกิจของรัฐแอลเบอร์ตาเติบโตถึง 57% ซึ่งมากที่สุดในบรรดารัฐทั้งหมดของแคนาดา

ขณะที่ในปี 2019 มีมูลค่าการลงทุนในแหล่งทรายน้ำมันที่แคนาดากว่า 321,000 ล้านบาท

ที่น่าสนใจคือ ปริมาณสำรองน้ำมันดิบของแคนาดาทั้งหมดในปัจจุบัน กว่า 97% มาจากแหล่งทรายน้ำมัน

ปี 2019 แคนาดาผลิตน้ำมันดิบและส่งออกได้ถึงวันละ 4.7 ล้านบาร์เรลต่อวัน ซึ่งกว่า 63% ของปริมาณการผลิตนั้นมาจากแหล่งทรายน้ำมันของประเทศ

นอกจากนี้ 80% ของปริมาณน้ำมันดิบที่ผลิตได้จะถูกส่งออกไปขายต่างประเทศ ทำให้ในปัจจุบัน สินค้าส่งออกอันดับ 1 ของแคนาดาคือ หมวดสินค้าแร่ธาตุและปิโตรเลียม

พอเป็นแบบนี้ จึงบอกได้ว่าแหล่งทรายน้ำมันนั้นมีความสำคัญต่อเศรษฐกิจของแคนาดาไม่น้อยเลย

ทั้งเป็นแหล่งรายได้จากการส่งออกของประเทศ และยังก่อให้เกิดการจ้างงานในอุตสาหกรรมไม่ต่ำกว่า 550,000 ตำแหน่ง

แต่ผลกระทบจากการที่ราคาน้ำมันตกต่ำในปัจจุบัน ก็ได้สร้างความท้าทายให้แก่แคนาดาเช่นกัน เนื่องจากต้นทุนในการผลิตน้ำมันจากแหล่งทรายน้ำมันโดยเฉลี่ยแล้วจะสูงกว่าต้นทุนการผลิตน้ำมันจากแหล่งอื่น

อย่างไรก็ตาม ถ้าในอนาคต
เทคโนโลยีในการขุดเจาะและสำรวจก้าวหน้าขึ้น
ต้นทุนในการผลิตน้ำมันจากแหล่ง Oil Sand ของแคนาดาก็จะถูกลงไปด้วย
ซึ่งก็ต้องรอดูกันว่า เรื่องนี้จะเป็นอย่างไรต่อไป

แต่ที่แน่ๆ แคนาดา ก็เหมือนผู้โชคดี
ที่มีขุมทรัพย์ใต้พื้นดินที่มีมูลค่ามหาศาล
ขุมทรัพย์ที่ชื่อว่า “Oil Sand”
