我說我自己的感覺啦，你參考一下。
首先， life 有生命、活的東西（生命跡象）的意思，
如： There's no life on the Moon.
對我而言是比較靜態的，或者說是一種狀態。
所以當生活解時，我覺得比較偏向“生活狀態”。
living對我而言則比較有動態的意含（而且是從動詞轉來的不是嗎 :p ），
因此我會解釋為“生活方式”。
你可以用中文來想，
好比我說：他的生活過得很辛苦。
我會說： He has a really hard life.
辛苦不一定是賺錢方面的辛苦，可能來自於家庭壓力或人際不順，
這是一種狀態，一種情境，而不是“方式”，
所以我用 life 時，雖然也有可能指的是 living （生計），但也可以不是。
若此處使用 living 時，那就是討生活過得很辛苦了。
而：他喜歡簡樸的生活。
He likes plain living.
當我用 living 時，我心裡想的是他喜歡簡樸的生活方式。
不過我這個例子可能不夠明顯，
你也許會爭論簡樸也可以單純用在生活狀態上。 :P
有些時候你所指的生活可能可以是狀態，也可以是方式，
那麼用哪一個都可以，你自己在語感上覺得用那個順，
或是出自你的直覺用字就可以了。
甚至有些時候它們二者的分壘並不是很明顯。
