Answered a question today on Singapore’s role in sustainable development. This was in a dialogue at the FutureChina Global Forum organised by 通商中国 Business China.
I joked that Singapore is such a small country that even if we all stopped breathing it would make little difference to climate change. More seriously, we have few options for renewable energy. There is no space for nuclear power, and other sources are either not feasible (wind, hydro) or limited in scale (solar), so we have to rely heavily on fossil fuels.
But we will be a responsible member of the global community, and help to build consensus on an international agreement which is fair and implementable for all countries.
Also each of us can make changes to our lifestyles, to save energy. Every little bit counts. - LHL

Dear Sir/Madam,
A deep appreciation to you taking time off to read this e-mail.
We are a group of youths from Taiwan who are deeply concerned about the energy development of our nation, as part of a collective effort to mitigate climate change.
We hereby write to you to seek clarifications on some factual accounts of recent events in the EU.
In a recent report published by Taiwan Factcheck Center (TFC), it has indicated the following:
1. The “European Green Deal for the European Union (EU) has excluded the financing of nuclear energy from the Just Transition Fund set forth”, and
2. That “nuclear energy would be ineligible for – or have little chance in being part of – future plans on sustainable development”.
3. The fact-check report then went on to conclude that “the EU will not change its goal in the phase-out of nuclear energy, but each member state is left to assess and decide on its own timeline, on the grounds of laying out a clean, sustainable and affordable energy policy as stipulated by the EU Green Deal”.
We seek your assistance in verifying the accuracy and truthfulness of the aforementioned details, please.
We understand that the EU has always been at the forefront of energy industry for its visions, goals and cutting-edge technologies, which have made EU the role model for policy makers, professionals and enthusiastic youths around the world.
These include the excellence in development of the renewable energy market and technologies, as well as making significant contributions to carbon reduction by maintaining a strong presence of nuclear energy in its energy mix.
Last but not least, if at all possible, we are also interested in receiving relevant official news reports or official documents from you on the above matter, as these would be invaluable resources for us.
Once again, many thanks and deep appreciation for your time.
Yours Faithfully

NRC(Nuclear Regulatory Commission)是美國的國家最高核能管制機構,委 員長是由總統直接指派。
- Dr. Gregory B. Jaczko
“Statement of Gregory Jaczko on Future of Nuclear Power in Taiwan.
History has shown that nuclear power is an unreliable and expensive technology. In the United State nuclear reactors are shutting down, because they cannot compete economically with renewable energy and cleaner burning natural gas. New reactors currently under construction cost $10 billion more than promised. This money would be better spent advancing newer, more reliable approaches to emissions free energy.
Today with the important pressing need to deal with climate change, some countries are reconsidering nuclear power to address climate change. Nuclear reactors are a bad bet for a climate strategy. They were the cornerstone of Japan's strategy to cut carbon emissions. After the Fukushima accident, lack of alternatives, Japan had to replace much of their reactor output with polluting fossil fuels.
Globally energy from wind, solar and water is becoming the cheapest sustainable, clean energy source. These technologies will only become cheaper as more and more countries adopt them as a primary source of energy. Investments in these areas and grid modernization provide the real solution for the world’s insatiable need for power and the planet’s need to eliminate carbon emissions. - Dr. Gregory B. Jaczko
is nuclear energy sustainable 在 Ghost Island Media 鬼島之音 Youtube 的評價
Taiwan’s next referendum will soon vote on activating the nation’s fourth nuclear plant, as well as constructing a natural gas plant on an algal reef that's critical for Taiwan’s biodiversity. These decisions come as governments around the world are scrambling to meet the demands of the Paris Agreement, and as environmental activists fight for a more sustainable planet.
Green Parties propose an alternative voice in politics to tackle our environmental ruin. All over the world, there are 91 Green Parties that believe in committing our governments to environmental stewardship, through electing green movement leaders into office. In Asia, Taiwan is home to the region’s oldest Green Party, which won a National Assembly seat in 1996 - their very first election campaign.
Our guest today is Professor Dafydd Fell, a political scientist at SOAS University of London, and Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies. Dafydd Fell is author of the new book: “Taiwan’s Green Parties: Alternative Politics in Taiwan”, published in March 2021 by Routledge.
Today’s episode is hosted by Nate Maynard - Senior Consultant at Reset Carbon, and host of Waste Not Why Not. You can check out his show for more insights on the world’s ocean, energy, and waste issues.
